We no longer have a motor industry so no show--very sad. I hope Farnborough is not the next--we no longer have an aircraft industry either. This is getting to be beyond a joke--what next? Thank God we still make caravans although I have never owned one, so the camping and caravanning show may be secure.

Granted that the UK motor industry is mostly foreign owned, nevertheless there is a very significant industry in UK. There are more cars made in UK than anywhere else in Europe, including France and Germany, with British workers and British suppliers producing top quality products. (Even exporting to Japan.) My friends in Sunderland, Derby and Swindon, in particular would be offended to think that their contribution to the economy was not valued. At the high end, almost all the F1 cars are made in UK, including major parts of Ferrari vehicles Exactly what the current financial turmoil will bring about to change all this, is anybody's guess.
In aviation, its very sad to see the demise of so many famous names, from Auster to Hawker, but its great to see the success of Airbus, led by France of course, and back in profit, and none of which could fly without beautifully made British wings and the powerful thrust of Rolls Royce.
Were it not for the French, the great Airbus project would have foundered long ago. Their leadership has been outstanding, with and without some of the dodgy dealing that went on around the edges. Even so, without the Airbus company, (Which relies on British wings remember..) the French would not have much of an aircraft industry either.Yes there is Dassault and Socota, but what about all the other famous names we all grew up with. Mostly gone.
The French do make some very good caravans. Right here in Lucon, not far from where I live. (IRM)
