The forecast maps are showing high winds traveling in an easterly direction - should be good for 27 landings, so if things remain as predicted expect diverts into LPL between Friday 0300 and Sunday 1800hrs. xcweather.co.uk/GB/forecast

I was looking around weather websites when ste-t replied. I agree, strong winds from the west direct down east-west runway 27 and airliner performance is actually enhanced (shorter landings and earlier take-offs), providing the air is not too unstable with wind-shear. It is cross-winds that modern 'wingletted' airlines are susceptible to, and is when strong winds can cause real problems. As most major British Airports have westerly facing runways between 24 and 28 headings (240-280 degrees magnetic), I really don't expect much in the way of diverts likely this weekend - now if there were strong southerly (or northerly) gales forecast it would be another issue altogether. My usual website for weather forecasts, with hourly estimates for LJLA over the next few days: www.bbc.co.uk/weather/6296588

I am sure you will spare a thought for John, Darren and myself who will be jetting off at midday Friday in the eye of the storm to SZG. Regards Beemer.

That is a strange route to Salzburg - the eye of the storm is passing east-west over the very north of Scotland, sure you are not really headed for Tromso?. Watching the BBC late weather Wednesday evening, the damaging storm is restricted to Scotland. True Northern England will suffer gales - all a bit of storm in a tea cup really, whipped up by sensationalist press short of domestic news.
