PRESENTATION NOTES
eg 27th/1115 shows the aircraft stayed overnight, departing on the date and time shown.
f&t = from and to. Where the point of origin and destination are different, both locations are named.
All times are quoted as BST ‘local’ time
G/A refers to an aircraft that did not land, performing a go-around only.
Where an aircraft operated on ICAO call-signs, this is noted by official 3-letter abbreviation. If there is no call-sign, then the aircraft operated using the registration.
The source material does not name non registered airfield sites, these are covered by the blanket term ‘private site’. Nor does it identify diversions, or the reason for diversion.

PERSONAL NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE MONTHLY VISITORS REVIEW
Well, after some delay, the monthly LJLA visitors review is back with a new home.
EXPLAINING CHANGES
A few notes having completed the July monthly visitors review. Although all the traditional information is in this listing, there are layout changes to produce fewer columns as presentation of columns on the forum presents formatting difficulties (sorry about the wiggly columns). Unlike Dave Graham I do include notable aircraft on regular scheduled services (in July the use by Ryanair of Boeing 737-400 leased-in for the summer and Flybe’s use of an ERJ-175 as a substitute for their regular Dash 8Q-400). Where known through comments or photos on the daily threads on the forum I have included codes worn by military aircraft and in which direction they performed a go-around. I also intend to make notes on colour scheme changes (eg Flybe aircraft in the purple scheme), but do need your help via the forum daily movements threads. Where an aircraft stops overnight the date of departure is shown before the time, I do not use the term ‘night stop’ – the date shows if it stayed one night or for several days. For passenger or freight charters I have (where known) indicated if the passengers or freight is inbound or outbound and for what reason the flight had been chartered (again not always known).
There are slight changes too in my approach to the write-up analysis section. If you have an opinion on the revised format, or have constructive suggestion, you are free to comment (if detailed best by PM) – the last time I did a full monthly review was in December 1986, so I am still feeling my way back into the hot seat. One current area of weakness is that my register reference books are well out of date, I’ve not been out and about to get new ones, as a result some types, especially those for registrations from outside the UK, may not be absolutely name, number and mark accurate. This should improve with time.
THE RECENT PAST
On a serious note, I am appalled by the summary deletion, without warning, of the past 8 years of movements from public view. Total loss of a superb and accessible heritage of painstakingly gathered historical record. I have always considered that the detailed, complete and precise visiting aircraft movements compiled in magazines since 1979, and more recently on the web, stand as a monument to each and every person who has worked since 1956 to record and bring detailed regular monthly movements to you. The deletion of nwan.co.uk website has considerably harmed the effort of all who have strived to bring you an accessible complete record of movements for near 60 consecutive years. An absolute disaster for the followers of activity at LJLA, with the foundations of what we have recorded for much of the past decade kicked out from underneath us. Even I don’t have all the months printed out on paper, so have had to think long and hard now that my record is broken as to whether it is indeed worthwhile carrying on at all, or is mid 2006 (the last paper printed movements) now, in reality the end of the line? I’m certainly doing July and August ‘14 movements while I make up my mind, so can hand on with continuity and with a helping hand the task to someone else if necessary – rather than dumping it without warning or continuity, as has just been the case.
Despite the comments in the previous paragraph, I would very much publicly like to add my thanks to Dave Graham who has put many, many hours of work over the 8 plus years he has compiled the monthly and annual airport activity reports to a consistently high standard, breaking new ground by publishing on the ‘net. I know the many followers of the nwan.co.uk site appreciated and valued his dedication and knowledge. A stalwart, who kept at producing the monthly and annual reviews for far longer than many who have been involved in the past.
THE FUTURE - QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS
If we do continue to produce monthly (and annual) visiting aircraft reviews, then I am looking for informed advice and help. While using the forum brings the option of easily viewing the listing to all, formatting columns manual , time consuming and wiggly, while the length of the review way longer than is usually acceptable for a post. Not sure how printing out the review will work for those who keep a paper copy each month. A website may be best for column/presentation, would cope well with the length of entries and keep all the months together for reference – as we know from the former superb www.nwan site. However, I know nothing of obtaining a website, how to construct it, add entries etc. Will I require a working knowledge of html? Can in the future the log entries be made in such a way as to be searchable for research on a monthly and annual basis? I consider the use of the forum as far from satisfactory, yet have absolutely no knowledge (or operational experience) of alternatives. Can anyone advise me, please (best by PM initially), as I really do desperately need ideas as to how to move forward. Brian.

LJLA VISITING AIRCRAFT, JULY 2014, ANALYSIS
SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRLINE AIRCRAFT
[/font][/div]SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRLINE AIRCRAFT
EASYJET
EasyJet throughout July based 2 A.320s and 5 A.319s at Liverpool, operating the great majority of their scheduled services, with only a few flights each week operated by Belfast based aircraft.
The based A.320s were:
G-EZTY (27/6-19th), G-EZWD (20th-21st), G-EZTY (22nd-25th), G-EZTV (25th28th), G-EZTH (28th-into August)
G-EZUR (30/6-into August)
Appearing from Belfast G-EZTG (10th, 11th, 14th).
The A.319s based likewise changed little during the month:
G-EZBD (June-12th), G-EZIM (13th-into August)
G-EZBL (June-21st), G-EZDK (21st-23rd), G-EZIO (23rd-into August)
G-EZDH (June-into August)
G-EZGL (June-23rd), G-EZFY (23rd-28th), G-EZAF (28th-29th), G-EZDE (29th-into August)
G-EZGP (June-13th), G-EZGE (14th-into August)
From Belfast came additional rotations by: GEZBK/EZBN/EZBT/EZDB/EZDI/EZDJ/EZDL/EZDN/EZDX/EZFJ/EZFO/EZIW – hopefully making 6 different A320 and 24 different A.319s used during the month.
Positioning flights required:
G-EZWD from Gatwick as EZY9011 at 0950 20th & to Gatwick as EZY9013 at 0010 22nd
G-EZTH from Manchester as EZY9010 at 1754 28th
G-EZAF to Paris CdG at EZY9004 at 0641 29th
G-EZFY from Luton as EZY9001 at 1554 31st to clear delayed passengers, due G-EZGE temporarily 'tech' at LJLA.
RYANAIR
Throughout July, on a Tuesday morning only, the first Dublin rotation was operated by one of two Boeing 737-400s leased-in for the summer from Air Contractors, EI-JRD and EI-JRE. These visits are covered in the daily visitors log above. Both aircraft are all white.
With 5 aircraft based overnight at Liverpool, a number of flights each day are operated by non-based aircraft from a variety of destinations, amounting to around 21 rotations per week. As a result I find that during July no less than 78 different aircraft called at Liverpool on Ryanair services. How much detail to publish here is an issue. For this month I’ll try, as with EasyJet to list the aircraft overnight based at LJLA, then list all aircraft noted during the month.
EI-EMJ (June-3rd), EI-DPK (3rd-9th), EI-ENE (9th-31st), EI-EBF (31st-August)
EI-EVO (June-4th), EI-DPO (4th-23rd), EI-DHE (23rd-30th) EI-EFO (30th-August)
EI-DYV (June-5th), EI-ENE (5th-6th), EI-EMO (6th-16th), EI-EKN (16th-August)
EI-EKN (June-14th), EI-EFV (14th-31st), EI-DAM (31st-August)
EI-EVS (June-17th), EI-EFD (17th-29th), EI-EBK (29th-August)
Note, two aircraft appear in this listing twice, due to information layout, indeed EI-EKN was here all month, bar two days in Dublin. Also some aircraft that were based at some stage in the month, either before or after had visited as ‘non-based’ aircraft. No positioning flights this month, most changes taking place either with Dublin or Cork based aircraft.
So the 78 aircraft seen during the month on Ryanair flights:
EIDAH/DAI/DAM/DAO/DCM/DCW/DHB/DHC/DHE/DHF/DHH/DHV/DHX/DLC/DLH/DLV/DPK/DPL/DPM/DPO/DPV/DPY/DWH/DWP/DYF/DYP/DYR/DYS/DYV/DYW/EBA/EBF/EBG/EBK/EBN/EBS/EBZ/EFB/EFC/EFD/EFJ/EFO/EFT/WFV/EFY/EGA/EGB/EKE/EKI/EKJ/EKK/EKN/EKR/EKS/EKZ/EMA/EMB/EMJ/EMO/ENE/ENF/ENI/ENJ/ENL/ENM/ENN/ENZ/ESL/ESY/EVE/EVI/EVK/EVO/EVS/EVW/EXD plus EI-JRD/JRE.
FLYBE
Flybe’s service from the Isle of Man operated smoothly during July, with 3 return flights on weekdays, one on Saturday morning and two during Sunday evening throughout the month. Often (but far from always) the same aircraft operates the two afternoon rotations and the morning rotation the following day. One variation was that the earlier evening rotation on Tues 1st was operated by an ERJ-175 G-FBJA as a substitute type. 24 different Dash 8-Q400s noted on the scheduled service during July:
G-JECE/JECF/JECG/JECH/JECI/JECK/JECP/JECY/JECZ, G-JEDP/JEDR/JEDV/JEDW, G-ECOB/ECOE/ECOH/ECOJ/ECOM/ECOO/ECOR/ECOT, G-FLBA/FLBC/FLBD. There has been some shuffling in the fleet with aircraft returning to service after periods in storage, often with a repaint into the purple scheme first. Noted during July in the purple scheme were G-JECY, G-JEDP, G-JEDV, G-ECOH and G-FLBD, while G-JEDR was all white (29th). Please keep me informed of colour schemes observed on the forum daily threads.
WIZZAIR
During July WizzAir operated 3 weekly flights from Gdansk (Tue, Thu, Sat) and twice weekly from Warsaw (Sun, Wed). The 14 different aircraft noted during the month were: HA-LPD/LPF/LPJ/LPL/LPM/LPO/LPR/LPS/LPZ, HA-LWB/LWF/LWH, HA-LYA/LYG. Just two visits, both from Warsaw, by ‘sharket’ fitted aircraft, HA-LYG on Wed 9th and HA-LYA on Sun 13th – both had been to LJLA before.
DIVERSIONS
It is possible that the Navajo Chieftain G-LIDE and Cessna 406 G-FIND that arrived early morning of Tuesday 22nd were diversions. If so, they were likely newspaper flights to the Isle of Man. No further diversions noted during July. The source material does not identify diverted flights, the reason for diversion, or their original intended destination – so any help via the daily forum threads is appreciated.
CHARTER, IT & FREIGHT FLIGHTS OPERATED
A decent variety of flights, mostly but far from all, with sporting connections. However I’m not sure of the reason for the three visits by A.320 aircraft by SmartLynx of Estonia, although the Eisteddfod at Llangollen has been suggested.
On Wed 2nd leaving in the early hours of Friday 4th, a Wideroe Dash 8-400 LN-WDF transported FK Haugesund to play Airbus UK at Broughton in the Europa League Qualifiers. It is some time since this airline last visited Liverpool; perhaps even as far back their Nord 260s and Dakotas some 45 years or so ago! I suspect (but have no confirmation) that the Eastern Saab 2000 G-CDKA that operated out to Aberdeen on Sunday 13th was football Europa League Qualifiers related too. Everton FC departed to summer training camp in Austria on BM Regional EMB-145 G-RJXM on Monday 14th, returning Saturday 19th on G-RJXH. Liverpool FC was transported to pre-season friendlies, firstly by Cello Aviation’s BAe.146-200 G-RAJJ out to Copenhagen on Wednesday 16th returning the following afternoon; then on Sunday 20th out to Boston, USA direct on Boeing 767-236 ZS-DJI, returning after a tournament in the USA involving several Premiership teams in early August.
Eastern Airways Saab 2000 G-CFLU brought in golf spectators for the day from Prestwick on Sunday 20th, final day of the UK Open at Hoylake. During the month SmartLynx of Estonia brought in their A.320 ES-SAL with passengers from Tallinn on Sunday 6th, routed from Dublin to Tallinn on Sunday 13th and finally to Tallinn on Sunday 20th. At the end of the month, the Annual Cathedral Catholic Pilgrimage to Lourdes (operating through Tarbes Airport) this year utilised the services of Titan Airways and their Boeing 757-200, G-ZAPX, scheduled for two outbound loads on Friday 25th. However, after the first outbound trip the aircraft developed a fault at Tarbes – the second flight operated on Saturday 26th, near 24 hours late.
Very few freight flights to report. Likely only the Metros EC-JCV of Aeronova on Wed 16th, Prague to Liege and Binair’s D-CBIN on Wed 23rd, Nurenberg to Leipzig. Cessna 208B G-EELS may, or (probably) not have had company freight on Monday 21st Blackpool to Swansea.
BIZ-JETS
Due entirely to the UK Open Golf at Hoylake, the numbers of visiting biz-jets were well up on a normal month’s activity. During the month I count 54 aircraft in all, of 9 major type groupings, with 13 different registration nationalities (CS, D, EC, F, G, I, LX, N, OE, OH, OK, OO & VQ-B). Although it is possible to state that a number of the biz-jets that stayed for most of the golf tournament week were connected to the event, not all biz-jet visits during the week will have been. It looked good down at the west end of the main apron with 4 Gulfstreams, 2 Challengers and a Citation X parked-up for several days, indeed two of the Gulfstreams were here for 10 days each.
I don’t intend to identify every visiting biz-jet in this section, for example 11 were Portuguese registered NetJets (2 Globals CS-GLB & CS-GLC both on 20th, 2 Hawker 800s, a Citation 550 and 6 Citation 650 Excels, although the larger aircraft types and unusually registered ones will feature. Of the 6 Gulfstream 2/3/4/5s, certainly 4 were golf connected: N716AS GIV, N517QS G550, N526EE GIVSP, N800PM GV, along with N117MS GIVSP 3rd-6th and N874C GIVSP 30th-31st, the final Gulfstream to mention being an IAI 150 Astra EC-KPJ on 7th. In addition to the 2 Bombardier Globals already covered, there were 6 Challengers: N604GM CL604 and N529KF CL604 both connected with the golf, plus G-REYS CL604 on 3rd, OH-WIC CL604 on 4th, G-MRAP CL300 on 13th and regular D-BIGA CL300 22nd and 30th. Hawker 125s visits may all have had a connection with the golf: two Netjets certainly were, along with VQ-BPH G200 on 19th and 20th and Saxonair’s G-KLNE Hawker 900XP on 18th.
Cessna Citations were the most numerous type, providing over half, some 29 of the biz-jet visitors. Of the 29, 10 were British registered, some regulars, others less so, while a further 7 were NetJet aircraft (some aircraft visiting more than once). The others comprised of: D-IBAK C525 on 18th-19th, D-IHEB C525 17-20th, D-IMGW C525A 5th-6th, EC-KES C525 6th-7th, F-HCRT C550 17th, I-STCA C510 18th, LX-FGB C650 on 19th, N156XL C650 17th-21st & 25th, N795HG C750 14-16th, OE-FFB C510 3rd-5th, OH-RBX C650 17th-19th,, and finally OK-PBS C525 on 26th.
To round off this section, just a single Dassault Falcon visited, a 2000 G-WWFC on 11th-12th, a single BeechJet 400 OK-ESC on 8th, two Lear Jet 45s: OO-EPU on 17th and OO-LFS on 30th, along with regulars Premier G-OOMC and Phenom M-YTOY.
GENERAL AVIATION AND OTHER NOTABLE VISITOR HIGHLIGHTS
.Twins of note include F-GJAD a King Air 90 on Sat 5th, staying until the 7th, with Piaggio Avanti D-IVIN also on Sat 5th and Swiss King Air 200 HB-GLB on Friday 25th. British twins included G-JANN a Seneca on Tues 8th, G-SERE a Twin Star on Wed 9th and G-PGBR a Partenavia P.68 on Friday 11th.
Compared to when I last compiled a monthly review some 30 years ago the number of visiting single engine general aviation Cessnas and Pipers are massively down. There are still some though. While our own resident aircraft routinely fly off to Caernarfon, Blackpool, Barton, Sleap, Shobdon, Halfpenny Green and beyond, very few light GA aircraft fly to Liverpool. There were though, a trickle from Blackpool during July with Westair Cessnas G-UFLY on 2nd, 6th and 10th, G-OWFS 17th and G-OWST on 24th. Oldest registered visitor during July being Cherokee 140 G-ATVK on Mon 14th, venturing all the way from Fairoaks. A rare type in LJLA, being essentially a three axis microlight, was Flight Designs CTSW G-CGIZ on Thurs 17th and again Wednesday 23rd. Somewhat heavier and with origins further afield came Cherokee Arrow PH-JUR on Fri 18th, Malibu N10522 on Sat 26th, Bonanza G-LOLA on Wed 23rd and Cessna 182RG M-GOLF on Wed 23rd and Thurs 24th having night stopped at Caernarfon between visits.
MILITARY VISITORS
Again, not too much activity on the ground by the British military. BN-2T Defender T.3 ZH004 called during the evening of Wed 2nd, while Defender CC.2 ZH537 was here late morning of Wed 23rd and again the following day. For the second consecutive month a 32 (The Royal) Sqdn BAe.146 CC2, ZE701 called; during the morning of Thurs 3rd and again early afternoon of Thurs 24th, along with BAe.125 CC.3 ZD621 lunch time on Friday 25th.
Great variety though on practice diversion and go-around, to delight those waiting on the 27 mound. First was a rare visit by a Bombardier Sentinel R.1, ZJ692 twice during Sunday morning 6th, the aircraft on a training sortie before appearing at the Waddington Air Display. The following day, Monday 7th, the sole Hercules C.5 of the month ZH882 appeared. The next day, Tuesday 8th ZA458 Tornado GR.4 of Marham Wing in the evening, with another of the type ZA373/007 right at the end of the month, Thurs 31st in early afternoon. Tornado movements were well down on June, indeed in July Typhoon FGR.4s outnumbered the Tornados, with ZJ929/DL early morning Wed 16th, ZJ925/QO:R early afternoon Wed 23rd and ZJ916/QO:S mid-evening Monday 28th. The Hawks from Valley were quiet, with just the two - on Wed 30th and Thurs 31st, both T.2s. There was a Cranwell King Air around midday on Wed 16th, a pair during the morning of Tues 22nd and a further pair during the morning of Wednesday 31st, all identified in the main log listing. Oddly, despite the RAF having 10 King Air 200s with 3 FTS/45 Sqdn at Cranwell, they only ever seem to send the same 3 upto Liverpool. Despite their proximity, based at Woodvale, UAS Grob Tutors are rare visitors to LJLA although often enter Liverpool airspace. G-CGKT ventured down the ILS for a go-around early afternoon of Wednesday 16th. Finally, the BBMF Dakota ZA947 made a run along 27 during the afternoon of Sunday 13th, seen by many at the SAHG ‘Air Fair’ over in the Crowne Plaza Hotel – the former original Liverpool Airport terminal.
RESIDENT AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY AND CHANGES
A number of the older, vintage residents made their way over to Manchester Airport for the TAS ‘Air Fair’ enthusiast’s event over the first weekend of July: Gemini G-AKKB, Cessna C-165 Airmaster G-BTDE and Chipmunk G-BCSL on Saturday 5th with Stearman G-BRUJ on Sunday 6th. Following the day return to Manchester, the Stearman flew locals on Sun 13th including an appearance at the SAHG ‘Air Fair’ at the Crowne Plaza, Speke, and departed for Barton on Monday 28th. More on this now departed resident next month. Other flights by our older residents saw the Gemini flying two local flights on Sat 26th, while on the same day G-BTDE flew off to an event at Popham.
Although there has been no change of ownership notified, Malibu N186CB, at some stage earlier this year moved out to Fairoaks. It made a day-return visit back home to LJLA on Monday 21st. King Air 90GT 9H-MOS has been busy in and out during the month, so is still considered as a resident, despite the Maltese registration (formerly G-MOSJ). We have physically checked the resident aircraft in early August and find little has changed amongst the fixed wing residents during the first half of 2014, and apart from the Malibu mentioned above, the few arrivals and departures have all been noted in earlier monthly reviews.
There have though been changes to the resident helicopter fleet during July. The three Robinson R.44s that arrived in June and have all continued to be active with Helicentre during July. Both G-CEKA and G-GJCL are still present here at the end of July, while one, G-CFNF departed to operate from Barton Friday 18th and now appears to be based there. As all three are/were at least temporary residents, their activity is not now included in the visiting aircraft log. None of the 3 has changed ownership, so they may well prove not be permanent residents. Eurocopter EC.120B G-OMEM has been active with Helicentre, spending part of its time in the Merseyside Aviation Services hangar and part of the time away. One of the helicopters frequently used by Helicentre, Robinson R.22 G-PACL at 1800 on Wednesday 16th was returning to the apron from a 40 minute local training flight when the rotors caught on the ground causing the aircraft to ‘flip over’. Neither occupants were reported to have been hurt, and there was no apparent disruption to airline traffic movements. It is presumed that within a week G-PACL had left LJLA by road.
LIVERPOOL AIRPORT STATISTICS
This feature will hopefully continue once Peter Hulme discovers that his abstracts from the CAA Aviation Data Unit have a new home.
EPILOGUE
An amazing month for biz-jet operations due to the UK Open Golf at Hoylake, with 4 Gulfstream, 2 Challengers and a Citation X on the main apron for several days. During the four days of the event, no less than 26 different biz-jets were noted at the airport. Airliner wise the two largest airliners of the year so far, with Titan’s Boeing 757 G-ZAPX and an executive charter Boeing 767 ZS-DJI which departed direct to Boston, USA, with Liverpool FC. While at the other end of the scale three-axis microlight, Flight Designs CTSW G-CGIZ twice and Czech Robinson R.44 helicopter OK-SIM.

My thanks to: Adrian Thompson, Brian Thompson, Stuart McDiarmid and for the encouragement of Phil Butler from a distance. Also, to the very many contributors on nwan forum: Sabreliner, Hawker, Evoant, Philglt, Blue Planet, Clifftop, ChrisB, Ste-t, Tonyspeke especially, and to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. It has taken some time ‘to get up to speed’ again on compiling a monthly report – I will be much quicker producing Augusts (I hope!). Brian Jones.
