Looks like what we have been saying for years on this forum is finally hitting home where it matters. Now that America is on to it, can we expect further public spending cuts and significantly tax rises to pay for bringing our armed forces back into line? America also wants us to stay in Europe with it's huge and ever increasing financial burden so perhaps they might like to pay the extra sums involved as it's becoming increasingly clear we can't afford both. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31688929

My view for what its worth.
Britain is still highly respected in many parts of the world, by and large for the characteristics that make us up (still), but that does not mean we are regarded as a world power any more. Our meddling in recent conflicts has just brought pain to the people we purported to help. The most recent of these is the de-throning of Gadhafi, and see where that got us (and them).
Our forces should be brought home from all overseas engagements, and trained as a home defence force. Counter terrorism, border protection and intelligence services with active seeking our of enemies from within the UK. There is a case for some limited overseas capability where the use of arms can assist in humanitarian works, hostage rescues, and protection of embassies. The RAF should also concentrate on home defence and the navy should involve itself only in the protection of British ships on the high seas, our coasts, protection of oil rigs and fishing, and repelling illegal immigration. If this needs a carrier, so be it, but I doubt it. The navy will continue to be the custodian of our nuclear deterrent against large powers who wish us ill. There is no reason why this redefined force cannot play its part in NATO. In fact it will be better placed to do so if its members are not scattered around the world propping up all manner of corrupt regimes at the request of our allies.

Our forces should be combined into one and renamed UK Defence Force - with a tag line of "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" Not sure about the nuclear deterrent - seems a huge expense for something that would either be a waste of money (not used) or Armageddon (used). (Could we not just bluff that we have one?) However, I would maintain a sort of nuclear deterrent with a force of nuclear armed Tornados and possibly nuclear armed cruise missiles.
