I have found some of my old 3"x2" negatives and tried to scan them on my Canon flatbed scanner but they just come out as black squares with no tone even though you can see that the negs are correctly exposed , has anyone had success doing scans in this way or is it even do-able. Thanks for any suggestion.

Not all flatbed scanners can scan negatives.
On my Cannon scanner I have to remove the plain white sheet from the top, so exposing a light source, while fitting the negs into a strip that locates precisely below the light source. I've have quite successfully used larger b&w negatives on my scanner. If your scanner can scan transparencies and negatives, check that the associated soft ware programme is not set-up for colour sides, or even prints.
Groundhugger, if your scanner is unable to scan negs, just prints then do drop me a PM - I am suffering somewhat from a 'shortage of time' at present, but if there are not too many we'll see what I can do to help.
Brian.
