I don't think any one on here will ever forget this as it's changed our hobby for good and no doubt we will all be viewed by the security forces with suspicion for many years to come.

True, none of us will ever forget where we were when we each heard the news...and then the TV reports. Similarly, those around at the time will always remember where we were when Kennedy was assassinated. Such memories of bad things.
9/11 certainly changed our lives; as travellers, aviators and enthusiasts alike. The other event which was a milestone was back in the late 60's when Palestinians hijacked 4 aircraft to a disused airfield near Damascus. Another attempted hijacker of an EL Flight was set free by the British Government as part of a deal, thus showing what a pushover we are, and setting in place the train of events for years to come.
There was an interesting programme on TV last night. Many heard explosions in the buildings and conspiracy theories abound. The essence of the programme was an investigation into the events of molten aluminium mixed with water. This is known to be an explosive cocktail. The cocktail was further enhanced by another volatile material as far as aluminium is concerned, the gypsum in the masses of plaster board used in the internal structures. Apparently, the 30 tonnes of molten alu. in each aeroplane trickled down to lower floors where it came into contact with flooding from sprinklers systems. This was enough to cause the explosions which were heard and which probably caused the buildings to collapse.
For those interested, I am sure you can see this on Channel 5 catch up.

I wonder why you say that? It wasn't a bunch of spotters or enthusiasts who flew the a/c to their destruction. Bear in mind that it was the first major attack on US soil in over 100 years. Understandably the security services and general populace became extremely wary. I've lost count of the times I've been (politely) questioned after a "concerned citizen" had made a report, something that never happened pre 9/11.

Over 100 years? What about pearl habor? Correct, I should have been more specific with continental USA.
Interesting article in The Economist this week BTW, the phrase "born Hawaiian, forced to be an American" being used.
