30/0925 shows that the aircraft stayed over midnight, departing on the date and time shown

f&t = from and to. Where the point of origin and destination are different, both locations are named separated by a - .

All times are quoted as ‘local’ time, so are GMT/UTC + 1 hour. As the source material is in UTC, an error by one hour is possible, but hopefully very infrequent.

G/A refers to an aircraft that did not land, performing a go-around only, but did not touch down. t&g is 'touch and go'.

The registrations of aircraft operating on call-signs, especially RAF aircraft on Go-Around are not always 100% accurate. Where a code and direction of Go-Around are given, this means that the registration was confirmed by Mk.1 eyeball (well, usually a digital image!).

Where an aircraft operated on call-sign, this is noted by official 2 or 3-letter abbreviation. If there is no call-sign, then the aircraft operated using the registration. Where there is just one call-sign, the same flight number was used both in- and out-bound.

'Football related', 'team chtr', or similar comments are generally determined by the times and point of origin/destination and is informed guesswork, not absolute known fact.

The source material does not name non-registered airfield sites, these are covered by the blanket term ‘private site’. Nor does it identify diverted flights or the reason for the diversion, however these can usually be worked out from other sources.

'WX' = literally 'weather out' conditions below minima visibility or above acceptable wind speed/direction, 'Dvt' = diverted in, 'chtr' = charter flight, Pax = passengers, Del = delivery, Arr = arrived. Often further detail in the written Report section that follows.

I do my best to check full type designations, however an occasional one may not be absolutely name and mark accurate.

The monthly review actually takes far longer than the visiting aircraft list to prepare, type, check and post. I was away for two and a half weeks in September, which rather set the process back. Even so, I thought I had enough time this week to get August's report done before the 5000 or so lines of raw data arrived for September around the 8th or so of the month. For the first time ever, the raw data arrived on the 1st, completely catching me out! A decision, complete August first then do September, or get the September movements out first while memory of the month was but days old. I went with the later - which means I have now two reports to do (well one and half, as some of August's is done).

I still have November and December 2014 to do yet, even in an abbreviated form, and the 2014 Annual Report of visitor aircraft registrations, types, operators, residents and changes to airlines/routes etc to complete yet too. It needs to be done before I consider collecting together the lists of visitors for 2015. Dave Graham did prepare some of the lists upto the end of June 2014 which I updated, but without total diligence, so am having to do it all over again as I keep finding errors, omissions and inconsistencies. Don't worry I get there eventually. Brian.

AN OVERVIEW FOR SEPTEMBER 2015.

AIRPORT AND AIRLINE DEVELOPMENTS

FLYBE COMMENCE THEIR AMSTERDAM LINK

Amsterdam became the current third destination for Flybe from LJLA when the service commenced at 07:15 on Monday 7th September when G-JECE departed on the inaugural schedule. The service operates at a basic frequency of 3 flights each weekday, with 2 on Saturday morning/early afternoon and 2 on Sunday afternoon/evening. Hopefully the competition, extra advertising and attractive lead-in prices will bring new passengers onto the service and expand the customer base alongside EasyJet’s flights. It will be interesting to watch how passenger loads develop during the winter and into next spring.

MORE GOOD NEWS FOR SUMMER 2016

Good news has followed good news, along with a slight setback, during September with regards to operations next summer.

First bit of good news is that after a delayed start this year and confusing alterations to flight times, the Czech Airlines twice weekly service to Prague for Summer season 2015 has been confirmed as operating again for the whole Summer 2016 season from 28th April through to the end of October.

This good news was soon followed by the announcement that another new airline would be operating into LJLA summer 2016 in the form of Vueling Airline of Spain. From March 27th they will link LJLA and Barcelona, initially 3 times a week on Wednesday and Friday early afternoons and Sunday mornings. Vueling have grown rapidly in recent years and operate a fleet of around a hundred Airbus A.320 aircraft so are well placed to compete head-to-head with Ryanair and EasyJet. The hope is that Vueling will be encouraged to seek further destinations from LJLA once the Barcelona route is established. Within weeks of this announcement it was clear that an additional 5 extra rotations would operate around Christmas 2015 – have we ever had extra flights operate several months before a new airline inaugurates the new route? Certainly these extra flights are a vote of confidence that Vueling can innovatively compete with Ryanair and EasyJet on the route.

We have been watching Blue Air achieve excellent load factors during their first year of operation to Bucharest and summer season service to Bacau. To these Blue Air is adding two flights per week connecting Cluj and Liverpool during summer 2016. Cluj is the second city in Romania and an interesting new destination – even if many British travellers will not be familiar with it.

Right at the end of September it became clear that the well performing three times weekly Ryanair route to Bratislava is to be moved across to Manchester , apparently so as to compete with Manchester’s new Vienna services. After some uncertainty, it would now appear that the number of aircraft Ryanair base at Liverpool (4 rising to 5 for the month of August) will remain the same for 2016. While all is not absolutely clear yet, there is space within the timetable for a number of new destinations and/or expansion of existing ones. The first new route is the return of a connection to Reus from LJLA for summer 2016. In addition it was already known that Ryanair will be increasing the frequency of its Dublin service in competition with Aer Lingus. Likely more on Ryanair’s 2016 plans next month.

AER LINGUS TO DUBLIN AND FLYBE TO EDINBURGH

It is not long now before two important routes from LJLA commence operation. Aer Lingus commence their LJLA-Dublin link on Friday 23rd October, with a basic frequency of twice daily, morning and evening, with a third flight on Thursdays and Fridays. All flights by Airbus A.320 aircraft. Much has been made of the ability to connect at Dublin with Aer Lingus transatlantic services and through fares.

The new daily LJLA-Edinburgh Flybe service starts on Monday 26th October, with an around midday timing on weekdays, Saturday mornings and Sunday early evening. At the start of 2015 Flybe operated just the one route to Liverpool, in under a year they now will have four. All flights are operated by Dash Eight Q400 aircraft.

WORLD ROUTE DEVELOPMENT EVENT, DURBAN

Clearly, and rightly, the Airport management team are not resting on their laurels following a number of successful new routes and operators introduced in 2015 and are actively seeking introduction and discussion with further airlines and operators. A team from LJLA and Liverpool City travelled to Durban, South Africa for the 2016 World Route Development Event in late September.

GROWTH CONTINUES IN SEPTEMBER

As the summer has progressed, passenger growth at LJLA has been announced monthly over the figures for 2014. September has been no exception with a further over 6% growth recorded. The annual total for 2015 will certainly exceed the 4 million mark again, by how much is a matter of conjecture, but the additional new services should ensure that the growth rate increases in November and December!

SCHEDULED SERVICE AIRCRAFT

EASYJET (U2/EZY)

September appears to have been a good month for EasyJet operations out of LJLA, with no cancellations and no serious delays due to ‘tech’ aircraft. On Thursday 3rd the evening flight from Zakynthos EZY7160 G-EZFL diverted into Athens en route for fuel, so delaying its arrival at Liverpool until just before midnight. On Thursday 15th G-EZAD positioned out to Southend as EZY9012 late afternoon to operate Southend-Naples replacing a ‘tech’ AoG. Later, in mid-evening, it was replaced by G-EZEG positioning in from Bristol as EZY9014.

EasyJet used a total of 32 different aircraft on schedules and diversion into LJLA during September.

RYANAIR (FR/RYR)

Ryanair clocked-up another smooth month of operations, now back to 4 overnight based aircraft, as August’s 5th aircraft departed lunch-time of Friday 4th for Stansted. No cancellations noted, indeed very few delays either.

Ryanair used 67 different aircraft through LJLA during September on schedules and diversion:

FLYBE (BE/BEE)

Flybe had a remarkably smooth operation throughout September. The Amsterdam service commenced as expected on Monday 7th and operated smoothly. No cancellations noted either on the Isle of Man connection, although the first rotation on Saturday 26th was operated by a leased-in VLM Fokker 50. On the Belfast City link there were 3 cancellations, all affected the first morning rotation, some certainly due to the weather, on Friday 10th, Thursday 29th and Friday 30th.

The Isle of Man connection still regularly uses the same aircraft for the two afternoon rotations and the first one the following morning. However at weekends the two morning rotations are the same aircraft, while on Sundays it is a different aircraft, but the same one on both afternoon flights. On the Amsterdam route, with the aircraft night stopping at Liverpool on the great majority of weekdays it changes with the Belfast City route aircraft: BEE903 then ops BEE1294, while the BEE1293 then ops the BEE904. For the last few days of the month the aircraft change as on the final Belfast City rotation after arrival from Amsterdam. On a Saturday it is the BEE901/1291 and the night stopper leaves for Belfast City that effects the aircraft change; although on a Sunday the regular aircraft change is at Amsterdam between the BEE1293 and 1294.

Slightly fewer different aircraft used during September, with 37 Dash 8-Q400s noted.

WIZZAIR (W6/WZZ)

Wizzair too ran a smooth operation during September. On Monday 14th the timetable on the Gdansk connection changed, with the planned reduction from 4 to 3 weekly, and the days of the week altered to Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Just 17 different aircraft used into Liverpool in September.

BLUE AIR (OB/BME)

Flights from Bucharest and Bacau all operated smoothly. All the Bacau flights continue to be operated by Boeing 737-300 series aircraft, while the Bucharest service was this month shared between series 400 and 800 aircraft.

The twice weekly Monday and Friday service operated smoothly throughout September. Just one aircraft called for the first time, OK-PET on 14th – this still leaves 3 of their A.319 fleet to call at LJLA with the season rapidly drawing to a close.

AIRCRAFT USING LJLA DURING SEPTEMBER

CHARTERS, TOURS & FREIGHT OPERATIONS

Charter flights always provide the enthusiast with interesting aircraft, September did not let us down as the football season gets established and European competitions commence in ernest.

The Premiership continues, with Chelsea travelling up to meet Everton FC at Goodison, they arrived from Farnborough on BM Regional ERJ-145 G-RJXF early evening Friday 11th, returning early evening the next day. Everton FC themselves flew BM Regional the next weekend, using ERJ-145 G-RJXA to travel to Cardiff mid-afternoon on Friday 18th to meet Swansea, returning the following evening. Meanwhile the same weekend Norwich FC arrived for their Anfield game on a VLM Fokker 50 OO-VLJ arriving Saturday afternoon 19th, returning to Norwich the following early evening. Although no team charters for the final weekend of the month with both EFC and LFC meeting Midlands clubs, LFC supporters arrived for a week-end cultural and match short break from Stavanger late morning Friday 25th on Wideroe Dash 8-Q400 LN-WDI and were collected on Sunday late afternoon by LN-RDV.

Liverpool FC having gone straight through to the league stage of the Europa Cup, started with an away game against Bordeaux. They travelled out on Titan’s Boeing 757-200 G-ZAPX (recently returned having been leased to EasyJet all summer) afternoon on Wednesday 16th, returning late night on 17th after the game. No supporters flew from Liverpool for this fixture. The next game on Thursday 1st October brought FC Sion to Anfield. Both supporters and team arrived at Liverpool by air on Wednesday 30th, late morning, on Darwin Airline Saab 2000 HB-IZP in Etihad scheme and InterSky ATR-72 OE-LID. Both aircraft subsequently departed, so the outbound aircraft used will be covered next month.

Most, but not all charters were for football teams. Two day-return trips from the Isle of Man to LJLA were operated likely for a Manx Rugby Club on Saturday 5th, using OK-RDA and on Saturday 19th using OK-LAZ – both are Van Air LET.410s.

Presumably a private charter, BAe.146-200 G-SMLA of Jota Aviation visited on the morning of Monday 21st, departing to Farnborough. Although a familiar company with their Beech King Airs, this is the first visit by their recently acquired ‘146. At the end of the month another private charter was operated by Eastern Airways using an all white ERJ-145 G-CGWV outbound on Tuesday morning 29th to Farnborough and then on into Europe, returning by the reverse route the following evening.

Freight continues to disappoint. As they did on the same weekend in 2014, TNT/Panair were contracted to carry horses from Shannon into Liverpool for the day on Saturday 5th, in order to compete at a Haydock Park meeting. The aircraft used was BAe.146/300QT EC-MEO in TNT colours. No other freight aircraft to report, although it is likely that a Seneca SP-NST that called from Groningen late night of Wednesday 9th brought in small parts.

DIVERSIONS – GAINS & LOSSES

Benign weather without fog or strong winds throughout September helped the airlines operate their schedules smoothly. There was early morning fog at LJLA on Tuesday 8th, and although it delayed the first couple of arrivals as it lifted, no aircraft diverted away.

However traffic congestion and subsequent holding delays at Manchester brought in 5 airliners on 4 different days, usually after an on-airfield incident disrupting the constant flow of inbound aircraft despite fine weather. On Monday 14th diverting in was an EasyJet flight from Santorini in late afternoon; Tuesday morning 15th a Ryanair Boeing 737-800 from Gerona ; Wednesday 16th in mid-evening an EasyJet A.319 from Malaga and a Ryanair Boeing from Faro; finally late afternoon of Sunday 20th a Monarch A.321 from Lanzarote. On each occasion the aircraft was on the ground at Liverpool for around an hour before taking the passengers onto their anticipated destination. An indication that at times Manchester Airport is running close to capacity as these are not the first congestion diversions to use Liverpool this summer.

TRAINING

Nothing noted. However as EasyJet have resumed training flights in October, I’ll leave this in this month. Military training is covered in the ‘Go-Arounds’ section.

BIZ-JET VISITORS

Numbers a little less than August, but far from the worst month of the year. Sole Global Express was colourful N797KK calling from Dundee on Saturday 26th, while sole Challenger was regular G-SJSS on several days back after a summer rest. No Gulfstreams, but there was a Falcon 2000 in the form of aviation Beauport’s G-LSMB on Thursday 24th.

Tyrolean Air Ambulance brought their IAI Astra OE-GBD into LJLA for the second consecutive month on Saturday 19th. Manx registered Hawker 800XP2 M-CTEM was here Friday 11th until Sunday 13th, while two of NetJets Hawkers called with CS-DUG on Tuesday 15th and CS-DRW on Wednesday 23rd. Sole Beechjet 400XP was Gestair’s EC-KKD from Valladolid on Saturday 12th and onto Norwich Tuesday 15th. Lear Jets were not as numerous as in August, but there were still 3: Manx based Lear 40 N700KG again on Monday 1st; Ryanair’s Lear 45 M-ABEU from & to Stansted on Saturday 5th and Lear 60 D-CSLT of FAI Ambulance out to Nuremberg on Monday 21st. Visits by Phenoms increase in regularity, with in Spetember Everjet’s CS-DTQ to and from Ancona Saturday 5th; Luxwing’s 9H-FAM here Tuesdays 15th to 22nd and operated out to Biarritz Friday 19th and back on Sunday 20th; finally Air Hamburg’s D-CHIC arriving Tuesday 29th and night stopping.

As usual Citations account for well over half of all biz-jet visits. Original 500/550 series aircraft featured Tyrolean Air Ambulance OE-GPS on a day return to Palma on Sunday 6th, XclusiveJet’s G-SPRE, Prague based N133SC on Thursday 24th and London Executive’s G-FJET. Smallest of the range, the 510 Mustang brought in regular aircraft from Globe Air of Austria, Blinkair, Aviation Beauport and FlairJet. CitationJet 525s featured British aircraft from Bristol Flight Centre and London Executive plus CJ2 OY-NDP on Wednesday 2nd and Sunday 6th; CJ2 D-IOHL on Sunday 20th leaving on the Tuesday and CJ1 ED-HIN of Bestfly on Monday 14th. Larger 560 Excels featured very regular Aviation Beauport’s G-CXLS and G-OJER plus Hangar 8’s G-OXLS along with Air Silesia’s OK-SLX Friday 4th leaving Monday 7th and a pair from Air Hamburg, D-CSUN on Monday 21st and D-CAHO on Saturday 26th. Finally one of the larger marks in the range, a 680 Sovereign D-CARO on Wednesday 9th.

GENERAL AVIATION VISITORS

Not so many GA visitors as in August, but still a fair number of interesting visitors slotted in between the airliners. Of the non-British registered twins, OY-GNS a Partenavia P.68C of Blom Geomatics arrived Sunday 6th for attention in the LAS hangar. Seneca 220T SP-NST arrived at night Wednesday 9th, possibly with small package freight. Piper Geronimo N2086P which arrived back in March and has been in the KAS hangar since without an engine, flew two, hour-long local flights on Saturdays 19th and 27th and then parked outside the Keenair hangar on the GA apron. Familiar all red King Air C90 M-RLEE called for the football match on Sunday 20th, while Avanti P.180 N79CN arrived on Wednesday 30th in connection with Sion FC and their match at Anfield, it departed on 2nd September.

British registered twins were mostly regulars. King Airs included London Executive’s G-CIFE; Dragonfly Executive’s G-BVMA (with call-sign ‘Cambrian 99’ on several occasions; Flairjet’s G-ERSE on a number of flights, indeed spent over half the month parked overnight on the GA apron; and all 3 of Capital Aviation’s G-KVIP, G-WVIP and G-ZVIP mainly, but not always, calling en route Wick to Exeter or return on Mondays or Fridays. Navajo Chieftain G-BVYF called again on Thursday 3rd, Chester based JD Aviation’s Seneca G-JDBC arrived on Sunday 6th and is presumably now in the KAS hangar on maintenance, while finally Air Med’s Piper Cheyenne operated out to Perpignan on Tuesday 22nd.

Capital Aviation (EGL ‘Prestige’) were kept busy on their Isle of Man Hospital contract, using Navajo Chieftains G-VIPX from August until 27th, then G-VIPY from 28th into September.

Singles proved more varied with Manx based Cessna T.206H M-AXIM on Saturday 5th, N147JT Cessna 172S f&t Andrewsfield on Sunday 13th and very similarly registered N147KB a Cirrus SR.22 f&t Biggin Hill, while amusingly registered 2-FIFI a Malibu Meridian on Saturday 26th. British registered were Cessna 172H G-AXSI from Tollerton Wednesday 9th, Robin DR.360 G-BXOU from Blackpool Tuesday 10th, Cherokee G-BTNV from Barton Monday 14th, Mooney M.20J G-BKMA from Cambridge Tuesday 15th, TB-10 Tobago G-BKBW from Bristol Thursday 17th and Van’s RV-7 G-CSKW Thursday 24th.

Fewer rotary visitors and most were familiar. Just a sole Agusta A.109 G-DVIP of Castle Air Charters on Friday 18th, sole local Bell 429 M-YMCM several times over the weekend of 19th and 20th and unusually just a sole Squirrel G-OGUN Tuesday 22nd . Non-regulars were Jet Ranger G-ISPH Saturday 12th and Robinson R.66 G-JNNH Friday 25th. Visiting Helicentre were Robinson R.44s G-HALS (ex G-CEKA) and D-HXXY, Hughes 269 G-CEBE and Robinson R.66 G-SYES.

RESIDENT AIRCRAFT ACTIVITY AND CHANGES

Robinson R.44 G-CJLL which departed 8th August was back on 26th September and active again. Helicentre were active with G-OMEM, G-FCUM, G-OGJC, G-OBIO and visitors G-CEBE and G-SYES. Merseyflight’s Tomahawk G-RVNB which departed 7th August has been seen at Defford Croft Farm airfield with engine removed for overhaul. Resident gyrocopter G-KEAY flew on 5th and 10th, while Sunday 27th would have been a good day to have a camera out as both our oldest residents, Cessna Airmaster G-BTDE and Gemini G-AKKB were active at different times.

MILITARY AIRCRAFT VISITORS

Another good month for military visitors, with the most unexpected a communications aircraft of the U.S. Navy in the form of Fairchild/Swearingen C-26D 900528. As a civilian this would be a SA-227DC Metro 23, the aircraft wears minimal markings, and the registration (derived from former USAF serial 90-0528) presented simply as 0528 on the tail. It arrived from Spain via Yeovilton mid-afteroon Thursday 10th and night stopped before departure to Torrejon the next morning. The visit was undoubted tied-in with a Spanish Navy Frigate Almirante Juan de Borbon calling at the Cruise Liner Terminal.

Possibly the last ever Sea King to call at the Airport passed almost unnoticed during the evening of Saturday 12th, a Royal Navy ‘Rescue’ example XZ578/30 called for fuel inbound from Kinloss and after 50 minutes on the ground departed to return there, or maybe to its Prestwick base. There were two new Chinook HC.6 delivered via Seaforth Dock in September, ZK559 on Wednesday 2nd which called fairly briefly, just long enough to pick-up fuel for the journey to Odiham. The next one, ZK560 arrived on Friday 25th, developed a ‘tech issue’ and did not depart for Odiham until lunch time Tuesday 29th.

For the Southport Air Display weekend a pair of Typhoons and a pair of Hawk T.2s were based at LJLA between Friday afternoon and Monday mid-morning. One of the Typhoons ZK320/BR (regular 29 Sqdn markings) flew the Saturday display flight, the other ZK353/BQ (with a 29 Sqdn red 100th Anniversary tail) on the Sunday. The role-demonstration Hawk T.2s both flew on both days, ZK026/Q and ZK028/S both in normal 4 Sqdn unit markings and black colours. Further RAF fixed-wing aircraft were a King Air B200 ZK460/U, more familiar performing go-arounds, actually landed and parked for two hours on the morning of Friday 11th, while grey BN-2T Islander called late afternoon of Saturday 19th.

GO-AROUND ACTIVITY

A Boeing C-17 Globemaster II ZZ178 was seen by many as it flew procedural holds and 3 approaches on 09 during the afternoon of Tuesday 29th, other large transports being a pair of Hercules on Tuesday 1st and solo examples on Monday 21st and Friday 25th. Plenty of noise followed some of a number of Tornado GR.4 visits, with two different aircraft of 41 Sqdn performing day-time approaches on 3rd, 8th, 16th, 17th and 18th, while aircraft from the Marham Wing were here on 6 occasions (of which 5 were after dark) on 7th, 8th, 9th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd. There was also a 41 Sqdn Typhoon on go-around in Anniversary markings ZK315 on 4th and most unusually a test aircraft from the BAe Warton fleet, ZJ938 as ‘Tarnish 9’ during the afternoon of Thursday 10th while using 09. Hawks were also active as is usual in September, taking advantage of the early dusk to train in the dark. Interestingly of the 10 go-arounds (using 7 different aircraft) by Hawk T.1s all but one was at night; the 12 by Hawk T.2s (using 8 different aircraft) were all in daylight hours. Finally and somewhat quieter were King Airs on 9th and 10th.

A couple of helicopters with Police MDH-900 G-GMPX on 4th, 5th and 13th and EC-135 G-CPAO twice on 5th. Finally Squirrel G-DCAM on 29th.

EPILOGUE

Prize visitor of the month has to be the US Navy Metro (C-26D) on 10th. The pair of Typhoons and Hawks over Southport Show weekend provided great photo opportunities, as did the C-17 on go-arounds towards the end of the month. Civilian highlights must include the Darwin Saab 2000 and InterSky ATR-72 on the final day of the month, and for different reasons two VLM Fokker 50s calling.
