As some misinformation has been posted regarding the rules here is a summary as far as English teams are concerned.
The winners of the Champions League (CL) automatically qualify for the next season's CL group stage.
The winners of the Europa League will qualify for the CL play off round, unless the CL winners also qualify for the group stage through their domestic league position, in which case the Europa League winners will take the spare place.
Champions, second and third place in the English League qualify for the next season's CL group stage.
Fourth place in the league should qualify for the CL play off round.
The FA Cup winners qualify for the next season's Europa League (EL) group stage. Should the winners have already qualified for the CL, the cup runners up no longer qualify for the EL. This place would then go to the next place in the league.
The next place in the league will qualify for the EL group stage unless that team has already qualified for the CL in which case the League Cup winners could take this place.
The League Cup winners qualify for the EL final qualifying round, unless they have already qualified in a higher position, in which case the next team in the league will take this place.
Only a maximum of five teams can qualify for the CL, so if both Manchester City and Liverpool win their respective European competitions and neither finish in the top four in the league, I understand the fourth team in the league will not qualify for the CL and will compete in the EL instead.
I understand should the English take up five CL places then an EL place is lost, so it is not possible for the eighth place in the league to qualify.
The place in the EL for the League Cup winners is at the discretion of the FA, who could decide in the future to stop this. The League Cup runners up cannot and have never been given a place.
Losers of the CL play off tie go into the EL.
