I can not remember in the old Forum if it was ever confirmed that the old airfield North of the M62 was going to be a prison or not. Yesterday two contractors came to our unit for some bearing for the crushing machine and told us it was going to be the site for the new prison. Regards Beemer.

I noticed a few days ago that all the old hangers north of the M62 had been demolished which is a shame because they were the last reminders of a once very large airbase. I recollect there were a few protests when they demolished the wartime control tower and there were moves to have listed building status on the remaining hangers. Obviously this didn't happen which is a pity.

We all know it should have become a joint Liverpool/Manchester airport but local politics got in the way.

Quite true, but besides that the main runway was subject to subsidence from Bold colliery not to far away. You must remember the M62 being resurfaced a few times after construction due to this problem. My father-in-law was one of the"boys from the black stuff" and was on the resurfacing several times. He made quite a bit of money from that!! ;D

There were plans to extend the runway towards Winwick to overcome the subsidence problems.

According to 09/27 it was to be named after the two great north west airports by taking one word from each of their names. Liverpool was to be used from Liverpool Airport and the Airport from Manchester. Now, you couldn't get fairer than that - could you ;D
