Technically they're not trying to 'hijack' Liverpool's bid: the original intention was to bid for the games in 2026 it's just that Durban, selected host for the 2022 games has pulled out due to financial problems. Personally, if Liverpool is to bid to host the Commonwealth Games I'd prefer them to take their time, do it properly and allow plenty of time to get the necessary infrastructure in place. It would be an absolute PR disaster to offer to host before the city was ready and be faced with chaos for the athletes.

I appreciate what you are saying andyh, but do you remember the European Capital of Culture 2008? It was, and still remains, the best Capital of Culture effort even 9 years later. I was invited to Linz, Austria, in 2009 when they followed Liverpool as Capital of Culture and the good burgers of Linz were embarrassed as to how low-key it was compared to Liverpool. Our city has, since then, developed an international reputation for its ability to organise spectaculars. The number of hotels built since 2008 in Liverpool - plus the Arena and the Conference and Exhibition Centre - is testimony to that. Personally, I am quietly confident that the city could do the Commonwealth Games proud if they were awarded here. Let's be positive.

I totally agree Liverpoolman. The city council are heavily involved with Everton in planning their new stadium. This could be developed in such a way to serve both purposes. The city has one of the largest student populations in the country. There are many flats available in June, July and August which could be used to accommodate the athletes. There are more being built each year. An international swimming pool would be required. The arena and conference centre could be used for some of the other sports e.g. Boxing, weight lifting table tennis etc. The university's have quite decent facilities which could be developed for other sports. The city has a growing number of hotels, although more would be needed and who knows some investment at the stations and the airport. All in all the city is in a great place to put on a great show.

Couldn`t agree more with the last two comments, everybody knows in our nearest neighbour what this would give us if we get it,more infrastructure and even more world status.

Gentlemen , I respectfully disagree with the enthusiasm expressed at the prospect of Liverpool hosting the Commonwealth Games. The South Africans have sensibly recognised that this is an expensive non-event. Good luck to whoever has to pay the bill so long as it is not the citizens of Liverpool.

It could be Liverpool's only chance. If Manchester was awarded the games in 2022 they are unlikely to select a British venue again for 2026.
I remember when Manchester originally bid for the Commonwealth Games they said it would be a North-West event with equestrian events being held at Aintree, some water sports in Chester plus other activities in Wigan and Preston.
When Manchester won the games Liverpool, Chester, Wigan and Preston were quietly dropped as venues.

I don't disagree that the city could do an excellent job of hosting the Commonwealth games, but four and a half years to get all of the infrastructure in place to cater for the games and athletes is, in my opinion, insufficient (they had five years to plan Capita of Culture and didn't really have to build anything as part of it). Everton's stadium is still a twinkle in the Mayor's eye - the club hasn't even agreed heads of terms with the landowner yet, never mind agreed the detail, purchased the site, found the money to build the stadium ad then actually develop it.
Still, the games were a catalyst for Manchester and could be the same for Liverpool. Whether they would generate the kind of skilled, well paid jobs that the city needs (or get the potholes sorted) is another matter.

Gold Coast are also apparently putting their hand up to host back to back games (since they have the infrastructure already in place). Can't imagine the games committee going for consecutive games in Oz though
