Hello Folks I recently bought a Canon EF-S 15-85mm IS lens, which arrived today. Although I don’t have any other EF-S lenses, I needed a decent wide angle lens and this one was the widest I could find and had some very encouraging reviews so I ‘bit the bullet’ and it arrived today. So I was quite keen to give it a try. I took these shots today to see what it would do. It was mounted on a recently repaired EOS 40D (so also a good chance to see if the repairs have worked). The first shot is at 15mm and f8 of both Walney based King Air’s. What I found was sharp across the entire image (sometimes find with wide angle lenses that the sharpness softens towards the edges). The next shot was of G-CDZT cockpit, again at 15mm but with the lens wide open at f3.5 with flash. An even harsher test, but again sharp all the way to the edges. A big selling point of this lens is its image stabiliser, they claim it is equivalent to four stops. The shot of G-KWLI was taken at Filton in very poor light at 1/25th of a second hand held, try that without an image stabiliser! Couldn’t resist the last shot, taken at 10000ft over BCN on the way back from Filton to Walney, a very dramatic looking sky just before sunset. Taken at 85mm and f5.6. Its not a very comprehensive test but I think I am happy with it and would go as far as to say I would recommend this lens. Cheers Shaun

Just a quick update on this lens after a bit more experience with it. It does suffer from some bad vignetting when wide open (the tendency for under exposed corners) but this can be got around by stopping it down to at least f6.3. That isn't really a problem as the stabiliser is worth its weight in gold!
Cheers
Shaun
