The Heathrow video thread got me thinking. My Uncle was what used to be called MD of Field Aircraft Services- they had a hangar at Heathrow. When I used to stay with him he would let me stand at end of his hangar for some serious spotting. How I wish I had a decent camera in those days. Recently found my log book, so I list below a log of the main interesting stuff spotted on 19/8/70. Not many of those flying machines left now. Enjoy the Nostalgia............aaah

Ok here goes, I must have returned the next day as this log is dated 20/8/1970. How I wish the dementia had not kicked in and I could remember this lot!!!!!! Again this will have been from standing at end of Field Aircraft services hangar which I can just recall I think was roughly under where T4 was built. So fairly close to runway. I will omit Tridents, and BOAC stuff this time. CF-TJJ Dc8 Air Canada + CF-TJB, CF-TJU AP-AUO 707 P.I.A. Terrific log, brings back memories of the good old days when there was so much more variety. As a local spotter at the time I used to cycle up to the grassy area by the general aviation area where Fields hanger was located. Interesting, my father also worked for Field's at the time, if I recall correctly he was Chief Credit Controller and based in the wooden offices on the approach road to the hanger. I can recall him often being dispatched to Ghana & Nigeria to collect debts on engine overhaul work done at East Midlands, so he was a regular on VC10 9G-ABO, often armed with a wallet full of sterling to grease the palms of those who had the power to release funds for work done.

Hi Bulldog Amazing to see so many airlines are still operating now. The Laker 707 must have been a rare sight at Heathrow

Hi from a new member.
Always interesting to read other peoples sightings from many years ago. My oldest logs go back to summer 1967 when I started visiting my home airport of Luton. Not exactly a hive of activity in 1967, of course. Occasional visits to Heathrow and Gatwick plus a Jersey holiday swelled my logbook back then. Also visited Birmingham, East Midlands, Sywell, Oxford, Blackbushe, Compton Abbas, Elstree, Southampton, Southend and Stansted in my first year. If any of these are of interest to anyone, let me know (or subsequent years, of course). Here's my first Heathrow log just for starters. Heathrow Airport 24/9/67

Good log, nice selection of prop liners there. Hope you can remember them better than I can. Lot more variety then than we get now. Good times

Have spent much time downloading photos of aircraft from my early logs which helps the memory. The Gatwick visit was hardly a nice summers day, with mist, low cloud and drizzle, so we spent most of the time there inside. The north pier viewing deck was open, so I was like a kid in a sweet shop busily writing down the registrations of more piston propliners than I'd seen in a year at Luton. From inside the terminal I remember a large window with a panoramic view of the airport, and the excitement on hearing another low rumble just before another propliner came into view on our left, just crossing the threshold of what was runway 27 back then. Yes, they were good times - airports actually encouraged spectators with viewing areas back then, with the piers at Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow especially noteworthy. Shame the digital camera hadn't been invented!
