According to Fiona Bruce on The Antiques Roadshow, amongst others, things these days are "do-able". Do-able? - whatever became of possible? Yet another Americanism which is, seemingly, being accepted without question. I thought the BBC had a department responsible for correct pronunciation and grammar.

France too is having its language assaulted, mainly by the acceptance of English words, and even American ones. However, in France there is a government funded organisation dedicated to the eradication of the worst of these excesses and the protection of the language. Is it too much to ask that the English could do the same, after all it would be just the ticket for another of GB's Scottish cronies, many of whom, especially those from Aberdeenshire, speak the most perfect English diction and grammar.

On a recent holiday - they served a "fully cooked English breakfast." I asked if they also served a "not quite cooked English breakfast" but got a blank stare back.
Eats Shoots and Leaves is the book for anyone who likes to be annoyed by the bastardisation of English.
Microsoft has a lot to answer for with their 'American' English.

Has anyone seen signs on emergency doors in many shops which declare "this door is alarmed"? At the prices in some shops I am a little taken aback myself!

We could start a our own grumpy old members club and at least it would be written correctly. One of the best road signs that got me was located in Croxteth Park I saw whilst en route to visit a relative. The sign warned drivers as follows. "PLEASE DRIVE CAREFUL" It has now been changed. But it took some convincing. Anymore anyone The new container base in Ditton/Widnes had a road sign saying 'Intermodel Distribution Centre' (or similar). The first time I saw it, I laughed so much, I took the wrong slip road! I see it has now been changed to 'Intermodal'
