Hello Folks Another afternoon out on the fells of Cumbria, this time on the West side of Dunmail Raise which is just North of Grasmere. A steady flow of traffic through the afternoon plus a couple of Lakenheath F-15E's operating to the South over Windermere, but sadly not getting low through Dunmail. First was a pair of 13 Squadron GR4's. ZD792:100 and ZA614:076 un-marked (but with a very clean fin!). Then a single un-marked Harrier GR9 (ZG531:85) operated by 1 Squadron from Cottesmore. Finally a pair of Cottesmore Harriers (ZD379:27 and ZD322:03A (GR9A)), callsign 'Ninja'. Both operated by 1 Squadron but only ZD322 wearing squadron markings. I hope these low level reports from this corner of the 'North West' are appropriate to this forum, if not then please let me know (moderators)? Cheers Shaun

Keep them coming. Fantastic photos. If and when you have time, it would be very interesting to have a couple of photographs showing the valley in which these aeroplanes present themselves. It would just help to put these action photos into perspective. I also love Grassmere and the area. Very fond memories of happy days spent up there.

Shaun,
Just a point to note, your last two Harriers, c/s NINJA... that c/s is a 4 Squadron c/s rather than 1 Sqn, though I note the 1 Sqn markings on the jet, believe these were indeed 4 Sqn crews.
Regards Alex

Thanks Alex
Shame they didn't bring the 4 Squadron marked jets. Now into their last month as an operational squadron.
I learned today that one of the GR4 pair took a multiple birdstrike later in the flight and diverted into Waddo'
Cheers

Shame about 4 Sqn, less jets means less aircrew, I know a Harrier combat-qualified pilot who's now got no job to go into after a tour as Hawk instructor. Testing times for all..

Hello Alex
Great shame about your friend, i think after the forthcoming SDR he will have plenty of company. Its not exactly flush with flying jobs out here in civvie street either.

We really need to send congratulations to this government, it has done what no war has managed to do and that is knacker virtually every branch of our armed forces.
