Having not been to a UK airshow for eight years, I decided to go to the RAF 100th Anniversary show at Cosford. To avoid the traffic I went on the train, £32 return Runcorn - Crewe - Wolverhampton - Cosford, taking an hour and three quarters in each direction.
The highlights for me were the former BAe Samlesbury gate guard Lightning fully restored in 74 Sqn markings, and "Black Mike" the Phantom from Leuchars. Also the "Desert Storm" Buccaneer, Jaguar and Tornado. Some new types to me were a Grob Prefect from Cranwell, and EuroCopter Juno/Jupiters from Shawbury. Foreign participants included a Belgian Army Agusta 109, an Irish Air Corps EuroCopter, a Netherlands Navy NH-60, and a Polish Navy PZL-10. Warbirds - too many to mention. It was also an excellent opportunity to see the many different SoTT Jaguars outside and photograph them. I also managed to find a dismantled Oman Air Force Hunter behind the Museum hangars. The fast jets operated from nearby Shawbury namely ..... Belgian Air Force F-16, French Air Force Rafale, and a Polish Air Force Mig29 Fulcrum.

Excellent shots and report. Well done for going on the train, great that Cosford has a station handy by. Sorry I missed the show, would certainly like to have seen the Porter, a favourite a/c of mine. Can't complain was in Stockholm and Gothenburg over the w/e.

Another set of excellent photo's Martin,my favourite has to be the F4 ,one powerfull aircraft!! . I would love to know if it still has engines. Imagine it joining the other Cold War Jets at Bruntingthorpe. I think only three remain in the UK, the others being at the Bentwaters Museum and a Navy example at Yeovilton.

Martin, superb pics, and I was there on Sunday with my good lady and 3 more friends, an excellent show all round. A heck of a lot on display, and the way we entered (via car) was on the far side of the airfield where there were another 8-9 Jags dumped outside the old hangers. I managed a few shots of them too on leaving. There's a lot of Jags at Cosford! One of the highlights for me was the 84 Sqn Whirlwind, XP345, which I had the pleasure of flying in whilst based at Akrotiri in 1980 to Troodos and return, and yes I was as sick as a dog in it, what a ride!. When they were withdrawn from service in 81 myself and 4 other lads were tasked with the job of moving all 8 of them to secure storage in a compound a mile or so from the 84 Sqn hanger. I have pics of all 8 which I took whilst moving them. XP345 which was at Cosford wasn't actually in that livery as depicted now! There was no crest on the nose like the other UN operated ones, I've tried to upload the pics after scanning them, they were taken on a small kodak camera in 1981, so not the greatest quality but for some reason it's showing as too big a file to upload! typical
For the record the 8 Whirlwinds in Cyprus where
UN operated and camouflage livery XR986, XK970, XP329, XP345 SAR Yellow liveried ones XJ437 (Club) XP398 (Heart) XP346 9Diamond) XD184 (Spade)
The Phantom was also a great sight even t it was in 111 Sqn Livery! as I spent 2 1/2 years at Coningsby working with 29sqn and 228OCU at the time and 4 years at Wattisham in the late 80's with 2 years on 56 Sqn, a marvelous aircraft and always my fave fighter. I've also got some great pics somewhere of Phantoms down The Falklands in 1988 on a 4 month tour, with some great pics during a live scramble on QRA. Never got to fly in one unfortunately but had the great pleasure of a 2 1/2 hour flight in the Lancaster in April 1980 which will live with me forever, an amazing experience and I have nothing bu the utmost admiration for the men who flew in them, one hell of an aircraft but oh so scary
