Liverpool ATC officer shortages were mentioned on another site as long ago as 4th June (in connection with Carlisle which had similar shortages). It would appear that the situation has deteriorated further, which must be of concern.

I read Blackpool are having problems too Blackpool Airport is missing out on potential growth because a shortage of air traffic controllers has forced the runway to close at times, a councillor has warned. Conservative councillor Jason Roberts, who works in the airline industry, said the council-owned air hub was losing out on landing fees and growth in business flights. Coun Roberts, whose Stanley ward includes part of the airport, said he had met with businesses on the Squires Gate airfield who said they had seen operating growth. But further potential was being 'hampered' because the runway has to be closed at some times of the day to enable air traffic controllers to take a break. Coun Roberts said: "Almost all the businesses I have talked with have seen their operation grow within the last year. "Business general aviation is thriving with quick handling and short travel times.

I do not understand why an aerodrome has to close when there is no ATC or AFIS. It does not happen in the USA and it does not happen here in France. Of course there is a limit as to what is desirable in terms of movements and size of aircraft, and type of operation, but for a GA airfield like Blackpool it should not be a problem. Air to Air radio on the tower frequency is all that is required.
At our local aerodromes we have AFIS for most of the day, except at lunch time, but the runway remains open and even at night we have pilot controlled lighting and the ILS is still available. Fire and rescue cover is downgraded or non existent when no ATC/AFIS is available. In France, air to air communication is in French language only, only Brits usually don't care and just shout louder.

Controller shortage is affecting Durham Tees Valley Airport too. There is a system of managed closures in place, usually lasting between 30 and 45 minutes, to give the on duty controllers their required breaks. It has certainly disrupted our company operation.
