Visits by the Embraer ERJ-170 to 195 family of Airliners to Liverpool John Lennon Airport
The Embraer Regional Jet family of airliners got off to quite a slow start at Liverpool. However, with the frequency of visits accelerating, now is an opportune time to record the early years of visits. By the mid 2010s visits are well in the double figures per year and in 2018 Wideroe scheduled use of the aircraft on a regular basis on their Bergen route.
This type visit record also shows that you don't need a 40 year span of visits to make an interesting account.
2008
As with a number of airliner types, the first visit into Liverpool has been provided on weather diversion from elsewhere. Late on 1st February FlyBe diverted, recently delivered (14.1.08) ERJ-195 G-FBEI into Liverpool due to adverse weather conditions at Manchester. On flight BEE7359 from Milan/Malpensa, the aircraft arrived at 2300, positioning across to Manchester the following day at 1253 as BEE045W. With FlyBe back at Liverpool on Dash 8 schedules from the Isle of Man, hopes where high that ERJ-195s would be seen at Liverpool crew training or used an occasional substitute type. In the event it was well over a year before the second visit by the type.
2009
On 11th July, to cover for an unavailable Dash 8, FlyBe appeared to combine Manchester and Liverpool flights to the Isle of Man. ERJ-195 G-FBEF arrived from Manchester as BEE347K and operated onwards to the Isle of Man on the BEE606 schedule. Later it returned on BEE605, onward to Manchester as BEE348Y. So, only the second visit by the type and it was carrying Liverpool scheduled passengers - quite a treat for those expecting to travel on a turboprop Dash 8, even if their flight was running late!
On Friday 7th August, Air Europa positioned in EC-KRJ an ERJ-195SR from Madrid as AEA1903 at 1918. A little over 24 hours later the aircraft departed back to Madrid carrying Liverpool FC for a pre season friendly at 2005 as AEA1996. The aircraft was not in standard Air Europa colours, being a 'flying billboard' advertising Spain's professional football leagues.
Right at the end of the year, on Sunday 20th December, two ERJs operated into Liverpool on the same day, Sunday 20th December. Manchester was closed while snow was cleared from the runways. The disruption caused KLM to combine Manchester and Liverpool flights onto one larger aircraft, ERJ-190 PH-EZB, from and to Amsterdam on the late morning Liverpool KLM1037/1038 rotation. Later the same day Finnair diverted into Liverpool from Manchester with ERJ-190 OH-LKM landing at 2146 as FIN937L, departing at 0151 early the next morning as FIN8921, operating from and to Helsinki.
2010
Finnair reappeared at Liverpool on Wed 3rd February at 1700, this time with ERJ-190 OH-LKL on FIN3689 from Helsinki due to snow showers at Manchester. The aircraft positioned across to Manchester at 1852. Further snow showers caused distruption at Manchester later in the month. On Wed 17th February FlyBe brought in G-FBEB at 0915 from Southampton on BEE361, positioning to Manchester at 1102 as BEE044W. Two days later, on Friday 19th February, G-FBEF revisited, arriving at 0839 as BEE371, departing (probably positioning) at 0942 as BEE048W, operating from and to Exeter.
Hopes were high that we would see further FlyBe and KLM examples during the summer months. In the event the next visit of type was not until 24th September with KLM sending PH-EZP from Amsterdam on the early evening rotation of their scheduled flight. The following month PH-EZH appeared, replacing a Fokker 70/100 on the scheduled Amsterdam service.
The December snow and subsequent big freeze brought G-FBEB back into Liverpool late evening, Sunday 19th December on diversion from Manchester, inbound as BEE9BA at 2305 from Paris/CdG, staying until 1657 the following day before positioning across to Manchester.
2011
Two ERJ-190s first visited during January, both as substitute aircraft on LJLA scheduled routes. First on Sunday 16th January FlyBe used G-FBEL on the evening BEE107/108 Belfast City rotation. Later in the month, PH-EZN Saturday, 29th January, early evening scheduled rotation, KL1041/2 in place of the usual Fokker 70 - possibly creating extra capacity after an early kick-off Everton v Chelsea FA Cup game?. The first EMB-195 to call at Liverpool three years ago, G-FBEI called again on Friday 18th February in the evening routing Manchester-LJLA-Belfast City, combining flights, presumably due to a 'tech' Dash 8. Used flight number/callsign BEE1DY/BEE108. On 22nd April it was the turn of G-FBED to first visit as a substitute aircraft on the Belfast City route on rotation BEE107/108.
On Saturday May 7th a further airline joined the rank of ERJ-190 operators bringing one of their aircraft to LJLA. BA Cityflyer brought in G-LCYL on flight BA4508 (calling 'Cityflyer (CFE) 86N') from Naples around 1745, departing at 1849 for Glasgow as CFE/BA114. The aircraft is in full current BA colours and titles. Photo on the daily LJLA daily thread. Reason for the visit is not clear, possibly a charter, possibly a fuel stop.
Just a few days after the first Cityflyer visit, a further KLM visits brought in EMB-190 PH-EZF (first visit to LJLA) on regular late afternoon KL1041/1042 rotation on Friday 13th May, due to loads as there was advanced warning of the change of type. After the crucial (for league place and European competition next season) LFC Anfield game with Spurs late Sunday afternoon; on Monday 16th the morning rotation KL1035/1036 was operated by PH-EZO (first visit to LJLA). It was not long before PH-EZO was back again, on Saturday 1st July, again providing extra capacity and the use of type was expected in advance. KLM used an EMB-190 again on afternoon KL1041/42 Tuesday 30th August, this time using PH-EZP. On Tuesday afternoon 20th September PH-EZI made its first visit to Liverpool on the late afternoon scheduled rotation, followed by its second on the mid evening inbound to night stop and depart on the early morning flight to Amsterdam on Wednesday 21st. December 16th had a heavy snow shower during the early afternoon. Possibly as a result the evening KLM1040/1041 was operated by PH-EZB, previously here in 2009.
A delay to the IoM flight on a very gusty Sunday 22nd May brought in G-FBEJ substituting for the regular Dash 8s. Another first visit of an aircraft. G-FBEF revisited on Friday evening 24th June. A further Dash 8 subsitute flight on Saturday morning 3rd September brought in G-FBEG on BEE103/4, making its first visit. Problems with the morning Dash 8 rotation from Belfast Harbour brought substitute G-FBEH into Liverpool for the first time, operating around midday on Saturday 1st October.

So 2011 is busiest year yet for seeing the type at Liverpool. We still await the first visit by the smaller 'base-line' ERJ-170/175 model, which hopefully will happen soon now that FlyBe got their first in mid 2011. However with FlyBe pulling off the Belfast City to Liverpool route during 2010, and KLM withdrawing from Liverpool to Amsterdam at the very end of March 2012, it may be a while before we see 13 different EMB-190s in LJLA during a year again.
2012
As predicted a slow-down in the rate of Embraer ERJ visits in 2012. With a damaged Dash 8, Flybe operated a number of leased-in aircraft on IoM routes in late June. On 25th June, an ERJ-175 G-FBJE was programmed to operate an IoM-LPL-IoM rotation. First visit by the smaller model of the ERJ. On the morning of 20th July FlyBe with ERJ-195 G-FBEI operated an outbound charter to Lourdes. The return leg a week later being operated by another airline's Boeing 737.
Once you get one visit by a type or sub-type, in comes another a few months later. This Alitalia ERJ-175 EI-RDB was on a football charter bringing Udinese FC of NE Italy in from Trieste as AZA8038 lunch time on Wednesday 3rd October for a Europa League game at Anfield. The aircraft positioned back to Italy. Late on Thursday 4th October, to collect the team after the match, EI-RDD positioned in, departing later with the team and their officials.
In December, on Wednesday 5th, G-FBEN (a first visit) diverted into Liverpool due to ice on the runway at Manchester. The following day, Thursday 6th, G-FBEJ positioned in early morning to operate an outbound charter to Trieste with LFC supporters for a Europa League match against Udinese. The charter returning early hours of Friday morning after the match. A few days later, on Wednesday 19th December, as a substitute on the BEE606, evening IoM rotation, Embraer G-FBEL arrived from Birmingham as a replacement aircraft. So three ERJ-195s in a two week period, for three different reasons, although only one was scheduled in advance.
2013
First ERJ-190 visit in 2013 was a further Finnair aircraft on snow closure diversion from Manchester on the morning of Monday 21st January. OH-LKO operated FIN933 from Helsinki. By chance the next-in was a former Finnair aircraft, an ERJ-170 ES-AED of Estonian Air (formerly OH-LEH) during the evening of 3rd July from Riga as ELL8621. This is the first visit by the shortest of the ERJ.170-195 family of twin-jets. The aircraft brought in FK Ventspils of Latvia to play Airbus UK of Wales to play in a Europa Cup Qualifier. The aircraft due to leave LJLA in the early hours of 5th July. Then in December two Flybe ERJ-175s diverted in. First on Thurs 5th December with G-FBJF arriving from Jersey 1325, positioning to Manchester at 1507, with on Wed 18th December G-FBJI arriving from Aberdeen at 2014, positioning onto Manchester at 2153. No use of an EMB-175/195 noted on the normally Dash 8 IoM schedule to LPL during the year.
2014
Flybe Embraer 175 G-FBJA made a first visit on Tuesday 10th June on diversion from Manchester, seeking shelter from intense thunder-storm activity. A few weeks later another Flybe ERJ-175 appeared, G-FBJF on 23rd June operated the morning Isle of Man rotation BEE601/602. G-FBJA was back again on Tuesday 1st July, this time on the mid-afternoon Isle of Man rotation BEE605/606 substituting for a Dash 8. The next two visits by the ERJ were far more notable. On Monday 10th November Estonian Air ERJ-170ER ES-AEB arrived from Bournemouth with wrestlers in the early hours, departing in the early hours of Tuesday 11th for Gatwick. Meanwhile also in connection with the wrestling team, ERJ-190 G-LCYP of BA CityFlyer arrived from Bournemouth too, but in the early hours of Tuesday 11th and departed for Edinburgh soon after, Both aircraft were first visits.

2016
A 2016 proved to be an even busier year for visits by the Embraer ERJ series aircraft, with something in the region of 26 visits, though again all visits were solely by Flybe aircraft. During the year LJLA 'fleeted' the Flybe ERJ-175 aircraft with all 11 aircraft G-FBJA to G-FBJK having called at least once. Not so easy with the ERJ-195 fleet as some of the earlier ones (G-FBEA/FBEC/FBEE) had left the fleet before visiting, while G-FBEM is active, but had yet to visit John Lennon Airport by the end of 2016.
Since the end of October 2015 Stobart had been operating most of the Flybe Isle of Man flights with 2 dedicated ATR-72s EI-REL and EI-REM (a contract that ultimately ran until end of March 2019), however for a long time into the contract Flybe operated the final rotation (BEE 609/610) with their own Dash 8-400 aircraft. However for operational reasons (thought to have been crew hours) a ERJ-175 was substituted in the period January to end of March. This happened so often, I'll split Flybe comments up into two sections: diverts/charters and substitute aircraft replacements.
On Wednesday afternoon, 20th January a larger ERJ-195 G-FBEG operated from Exeter, returning there early hours of the next morning as BEE8001/8002 with Exeter City FC for an FA Cup replay. On Monday 29th February another ERJ-195 G-FBEI appeared, positioning from Manchester to collect stranded outbound Amsterdam passengers due to an AoG 'tech' Dash 8 at Liverpool. On Saturday 26th November evening fog at Manchester caused two Flybe ERJ-195s to divert into Liverpool. G-FBEL from Newquay at 1838, positioning to Southampton the next morning, and G-FBEK on its first visit to Liverpool, from Southampton at 1854 and less than 2 hours later departing for Newquay.
In registration sequence, aircraft used on the evening rotation from/to Isle of Man featured: ERJ-195 G-FBEJ on Sun 30/11; ERJ-175s G-FBJA Wed 2/3; G-FBJB (first visit to LPL) Tue 19/1, Thu 3/3; G-FBJC Thu 25/2, Tue 22/3, Thu 24/3; G-FBJH Thu 28/1, Tue 2/2, Thu 4/2; G-FBJI Tue 26/1; G-FBJK (first visit to LPL) Thu 21/1, Thu 11/2, Thu 18/2, Tue 23/2, Thu 1/3, Tue 8/3, Thu 10/3, Tue 15/3, Thu 17/3. Additionally, on Wednesday 26th October ERJ-175 G-FBJA due to the ATR-72 AoG 'tech', rescued Flybe's passengers on both the morning BEE601/602 and the midday BEE603/604 IoM rotations.
2017
Considerably fewer visits by the type to Liverpool John Lennon in 2017, but of greater interest being flown by several different operators. Eastern Airways were frequent at Liverpool with EMB-145 and Saab 2000 airliners, principally on football club charters, during 2016 they acquired two Embraer ERJ-170. For a while it appeared that they would became weekend regulars, being of a right size to transport football and rugby teams and staff to away games, however this was not to be the case and the aircraft left the fleet in 2018. G-CIXV was the first to visit on Friday 17th March positioning in from Paris/CdG during the evening to take St.Helens RLC to Perpignan as EZE9601 at 1010 Saturday morning, returning with the players and staff at 2245 the same evening as EZE9602, then positioning to Farnborough 0700 Sunday morning. G-CIXV was back Thursday 11th May at 1725 as EZE 8385, this time with Watford FC from Luton to play a Friday evening match at Goodison. The aircraft positioned across from Leeds in the early hours of Saturday 13th and 45 minutes later left as EZE9386 for Luton with Watford FC. The final visit by an Eastern Airways ERJ-170 was a rather strange one in that the aircraft positioned in, and positioned out! The aircraft was all white G-CIXW. On Saturday 26th August the aircraft arrived from the Isle of Man at 1415 as EZE 062P having operated a charter into there earlier. It departed Liverpool back to the Isle of Man the next day at 1105 as EZE 271P to operate a charter out of the Isle of Man. It appears that accommodation that met the crew's approval could not be found on the Island during an August weekend!
On Friday 22nd September congestion at Manchester following discovery of a problem with the runway surface and with single runway operation as a result, a number of aircraft diverted into Liverpool for fuel uplift and wait-out the temporary issue. One of the aircraft diverting was a KLM ERJ-190 PH-EZV on KLM1095 arriving from Amsterdam at 1923 and continuing onto Manchester with passengers still aboard minutes over two hours later. The final visit of the year was the only visit of 2017 by a Flybe ERJ aircraft. ERJ-170 G-FBJJ on Saturday 9th December brought in passengers that should have travelled the evening before but were stranded by fog at the IoM. So the evening flight BEE611/612 passengers arrived from the Island 0920 the following morning and outbound passengers left for there 45 minutes later.
2018
All 3 visits by Flybe aircraft came in the first half of the year. On Wednesday 28th February G-FBJG diverted in on a flight from Paris/CdG at 1610 due to snow falling at Manchester Airport. The aircraft departed for Manchester exactly two hours later. On Sunday June 10th an extra rotation from and to the Isle of Man operated as BEE605/606 to carry TT spectators, at LJLA 1520-1602. On 16th June a thunderstorm over Manchester Airport with windshear, sent several aircraft for shelter and a fuel top-up to Liverpool including a Flybe ERJ-175 flight from Milan using G-BFJB, landing at 1720 and completing the journey to Manchester after 50 minutes on the ground. A further diversion on Saturday 18th August brought in a BA Cityflyer ERJ-170 G-LCYF operating BAW4700 from Palma into the Isle of Man, landing Liverpool at 1953, diverting due to fog at the Isle of Man, less than an hour later the aircraft positioned out to Edinburgh. The passengers presumably completed their journey home ferry?
Until now all visits by Embraer ERJ series aircraft had been as diversions, charters or as a substitute aircraft type. The first Liverpool service scheduled to use the type was from Bergen, operated by Wideroe twice weekly for an extended winter season, from the first LFC Premiership match of the season 2018/2019 until the last. Wideroe, a Dash 8 operator had recently been the first European airline to order and receive the latest improved and updated development of the ERJ series the EMB-190E2. The inaugural service was operated by LN-WEA on Friday 10th August. The service operated on Friday morning and Monday evenings. LN-WEB first visited on Monday 13th August, and their third aircraft LN-WEC on Monday 20th August. In the period between mid-August and mid-December the ERJ-190E2s operated 33 rotations, although 'teething problems' with the new type led to 5 rotations being cancelled. From mid-December into 2019 Dash 8 aircraft were employed on the route as one of the ERJs was leased out for 3 months.
2019
The Wideroe ERJ-190E2s re-appeared in late March on the Bergen route, replacing smaller Dash Eight aircraft as Norwegian LFC fans flocked to see several high profile Premiership games as LFC came very close to finishing at the top of the League with a long run of winning games. LN-WEB returned on 29th March, LN-WEC on 12th April and LN-WEA on 26th April. In all 7 rotations plus a return leg of a charter to Stavanger were operated by Embraers rather than Dash 8Qs, before the last run of the extended season on Monday 13th May, operated by LN-WEC. Wideroe returned on 16th August for the 2019/2020 Premiership season, the twice weekly Bergen flights timetabled to be operated by Dash Eight aircraft. During September 4 rotations were operated by ERJ-190E2s with LN-WEB on 16th and new aircraft LN-WEX on 2nd, 9th and 23rd September. All subsequent flights flown by Dash Eights. With Covid travel restrictions from early March '20 the Bergen service continued with several repatriation rotations until petering out on 1st May 2020. For the following two winter seasons the pandemic restrictions restricted travel, however Wideroe's Bergen service should be back in September 2023, for winter season 2023/24. While there were charters into JLA from Norway winter '22/23 they did not utilise Wideroe's ERJ-190E2 aircraft.
The previous time an Embraer ERJ operated by an airline other than British or Norwegian had been into Liverpool was back in 2014. The only previous Spanish aircraft being on a charter in 2009. This changed on June 1st, when as part of the scramble to find charter capacity to satisfy the demand of LFC fans heading for Madrid for the European Cup Final. From the start of 2019 a change in format with all the details provided in table format, although not including the Wideroe flights. You can now make up your own connecting text!

With Covid travel restrictions still in place, Cityflyer had aircraft and crews available for charter which would otherwise have been on scheduled flights and

So 12 airlines, from 10 registration nationalities with 64 different aircraft, wearing 65 different registrations have visited so far, with the pace of new visits steadily increasing annually (as at end of February 2023).
Hope I've located all the visits to date in Dave's excellent monthly reports on www.nwan.co.uk, without which this type visit report would have been impossible, while I do know all visits since July 2014 have been covered from NWAN Liverpool Log, monthly movements review. Thread updated in June 2019 and May 2023. At the time of being updated in May 2023 there had been 2,565 visits to the thread since April 2012.
