For those of you who travel on the M62 look out for the structure that is being erected on the once slag heaps of Sutton Manor colliery just by Junction 7. It is called the "Dream" and features a 20 metre high statue of a womans head cast in concrete. Whatever your views are of this it has created a lot of discussion in St. Helens as well as the cost (£2 million) it does not depict anything that is relevant to the area, like glass making, the coal industry etc. For those who want to read more I will insert a link. sthelensnews.blogspot.com/2009/03/its-bonkers-reaction-to-face-of-sutton.html I am all for it, but it is not coming out of my rates. The only downside is the distraction issue as drivers look up while driving past could cause an accident. Regards Beemer.

Well, at least they can blame it on a woman ;D I think it will look good and as it's NWDA project lets hope they are using local labour to build it. However, as a Spanish designer has already been employed they do appear to have started off on the wrong footing.

As I came past this afternoon it looked like they were laying the "neck" section. It is supposed to be completed in four weeks. Regards Beemer.

With an unemployment figure like that area has I would have thought paying a Spanish Sculpture such a stupid amount of cash to build a totally useless item, money of that magnitude could have been better spent on the needs of the area and would have been more appropriate.

Many years ago as a newly elected councillor I was asked to vote on the construction of a "modern art item" in a Burnley park. The thing was grotesque, huge and had a fantastic price tag. The arty set came up north to sponsor this thing. My comments on it were recorded in the local press. I said that better looking things had been dragged out of the canal--thankfully others agreed and the costly, and ugly thing was never built. And that was before the economic crisis--who sanctioned this thing when we need every penny just to survive and retain employment? Bet you can't find any elected members willing to admit to it. Time for a change both local and national I think. Does the head spin???LOL

The Dream as seen this morning from across the M62 as the access to it was fenced off. The crane looks like it is waiting to cap it off, so to speak, but is held up due to strong winds. Regards Beemer.

Couldn't you get a better shot of the whole crane? Much more interesting than Mrs Richard Cranium's head!

Looks like money well spent. When you drive down the M62 from the Liverpool direction it can be seen from a distance, and looks like a farm silo. As soon as you are close enough to see it properly, then it is totally masked by the trees. Does this mean that a swathe of trees are looking to meet the great shredder in the sky? John F
