Hi

I heard about these on the radio earlier this week. At the height of the Cold War the Russians made maps of the UK

The Manchester area was covered mainly beacuase of the Nuclear material stored at Risley Moss

It is fascinating to see areas you know so well with the names in Russian

Fascinating! I love the transliteration of the district names into Russian: APMCTOH (Armston) for Urmston, ХЕЙЛ (Heil) for Hale and ЛИ (Li) for Leigh. These are obviously taken from standard Ordnance Survey maps and overlaid with Russian script.

And to think that when I was visiting Moscow in the 70s, I couldn't even get a map for the Metro, let alone the city itself. "Нет карт" (nyet kart) I would be told when I asked.
