The mighty Brabazon, biggest ever British aeroplane, visited our airspace during a test-flight tour of major cities. It was about 1951, and I've spoken to people who saw it, but I can no longer find any reference to the actual date. I did read about it somewhere a long time ago - but where? Does any kind person have any more info on the Brab flyover, or even perhaps a pic?
Thanks, Ken

I have this vague recollection that the Brabazon's tour round Britain was part of the 1951 Festival of Britain celebrations that were held from May to Sept that year.
I was in short trousers at the time and can remember my Dad telling me one day that we were about to see the biggest aircraft ever built fly over us in Liverpool. We lived near West Derby village then and I can recall us standing at the back of our house for what seemed an eternity, when finally this "monster" appeared. From where we stood I would now guess that it was roughly flying along the line of Queens Drive, heading north, probably at no more than 2500 ft. Seem to remember it was a Saturday.
It's odd how certain events stick with you forever, especially when I now sometimes find it difficult to remember what I did last week!

Back in the 1930s my Dad saw the Graf Zeppelin, or maybe it was the Hindenburg, fly over Merseyside. He reckoned it was photographing potential targets!

The Brabazon fly-over, up the Mersey from the west, was on 25th August 1951. I did see it!

That's brilliant, thanks Phil for the actual date - you're a mine of information as always! thanks too for the other prompt replies. I was only a tot at the time so I wouldn't have remembered it anyway.

Hello Fox Echo, Reading again through your & Phil's accounts, it seems that the Brab came in from the west on Sat 25th Aug, flew up the Mersey and turned east over Liverpool, then heading more or less north over the eastern suburbs of the city at around 2,500 feet. It was during the Festival of Britain so the tour must have been timed to be part of it all. Thanks again for the information.
