A family member is booked with www.railwaytouring.co.uk on a 'West Highlands' tour leaving Liverpool on Friday 3rd September. Departure is from Lime Street pulled 46115 Scots Guardsman at 0930, via Edge Hill for pick-ups at St Helens, Wigan and Preston en route to Glasgow overnight. Day trips to Mallaig and Oban over the weekend, then back into Liverpool Monday. Although it is some months away, where would be the best spot(s) to photograph the train under steam as it leaves the Liverpool area ? The one previous time I have tried, there were so many people on the bridge, there was not decent 'angle' left!

Hi Viscount, in the past I have gone to either Roby station or Huyton station, which is the next one down the line leaving Liverpool. I favour Huyton as the train is on the far side of the track. There's a signal box 100yds or so in the background which looks great in the picture. Also you can see the train in the distance and the line is straight. Roby is good but you need to be on the same side of the track as the train because of a slight bend on the line from Broadgreen. The parking is ok if you park right at the end of the road past St Bartholemews church. Huyton has its own small car park and the staff there dont mind people standing at the end of the platform. Hope this is of some use. Ian.

The steam pulled train is due to pull out of Lime Street, Friday 3rd at 0721, to arrive Preston 0831, en route to Glasgow.
Pulled by 4-6-0 Jubilee 5690 Leander (a change to the scheduled Scots Guardsman).
If anybody is up early and gets a photo of this train passing, do please PM me, as I would love to pass on photos to someone I know who is a passenger on the trip.

Absolutely stunning set of photos. Wish I had managed to get there after dropping a passenger at Lime Street. Nearly managed to get out to Huyton in time, really must have been a fabulous sight and sound, and all with the sun behind your shoulder, just where it needs to be.
Unfortunately when the charter returns on Monday, the final leg from Carnforth to Liverpool will be pulled by a diesel loco - so no chance of repeat steam action photos.

The next chance for Steam Train Action Photo's is:
The York Yuletide Express on Sunday 12th December 2010
“Liverpool Lime Street is our start point for a fun-packed day that will provide our customers in the Merseyside and Manchester areas a pre-Christmas treat as we make the nostalgic journey to festive York steam-hauled by special train – former LMS Jubilee 5690 Leander”.
Approximate Timings Station Depart Return Liverpool Lime Street 10:15 21:27 Huyton approx 10.29 21.15 St Helens Junction 10:38 20:56 Manchester Victoria 11:19 20:21 Rochdale 11:44 20:00 York 14:20 17:30
The timings posted for Huyton station out and return are from my own experience of how long it takes a Steam Train from Lime Street to Huyton. From Wavertree Tech Park Station to just before Roby is uphill and depending on the weight of the train etc the times may vary.....today's train was two minutes late at Huyton. I've also found in the past that if a train is running of a weekend (and this one is) the platform gets a bit busy so early arrival on the platform may avoid disappointment. Ian.
