Interesting story about G-ARUM I've never heard that before. We had a Dove runabout at Woodford, G-AREA which generally never left the UK, but was used in the early 80s to ferry us to the Paris Air Show, which was probably the only time it carried seven people!

C & K Helicopters was the maintenance company ( Casey and King ) always had Jetrangers , Hiller's and all sorts outside. Mr Wilkie was an individual purchased a Whirlwind which as restored to flying condition , watched it do its first flight after restoration , however not sure what eventually happened to it , thought it was rumoured to be damaged on the ground at Blackpool Airport at some point .....but could be wrong on that bit of info

This next set of scanned and restored slides covers 4th June 1983, the day of the Air Display. A fairly modest affair, but attracting some nice visitors. Including the Chipmunk G-BDIC that I had my Air Cadet air experience flight, and first ever 'hands-on' experience at RAF Ouston in 1962, as WD388. See if you can spot THE EGG in the 'egg bombing' competition! Also don't ask me to explain how this competition managed to take place at very low level between rows of parked aircraft! Great memories , unusual undercarriage on the Cub , double wheel bogies ? I remember reading about it at the time, it was a re-creation of a 1950's rough landing trial, possibly with this actual aircraft, a L-21B. The aircraft has subsequently been returned to a normal configuration still flying as G-SCUB in military marks.

Yet another set of scanned and restored slides, from the Summer of '83. This lot includes a 'who's who' of company aircraft, proudly displaying their logos. Summer migrants from Europe, and the short-lived scheduled services from the Irish "Avair", no two aircraft types the same! A rarity is the based but rarely flown 1939 built Monocoupe 90A. During this Summer period the CAA monthly airport figures showed Blackpool having one of the highest aircraft movement totals in the UK - it really was buzzing. Brilliant stuff. Thank you 'Acklington' for sharing these wonderful images with us. Of all these shots, one that is still around, indeed still Manx based is Aztec 250 G-CALL. Some 37 years later, there is a shot of her landing at John Lennon last Saturday towards the end of: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/34255/ljla-sat-7-mar-20. Clearly has had a respray in that time, but the general idea only modified, slight changes in colour and registration location. The Keenair Air Services Tomahawk G-BGXB was Liverpool based 12/81 to 4/84, and was a leased-in sircraft. It never became a G-LFS* registered machine. In an early post on this thread, you mention that there has been an earlier thread featuring the Dakota photos at Blackpool before. I recall it, but cannot find it despite a fair search. Did find a couple from Twin Otters at Bristol on a thread '35mm', and also found that the fascinating and well illustrated thread on 'Jurby - the Twilight Years' has been decimated by 'Tiny Pics' and 'Photobucket'. Again, thank you for this amazing thread that keeps on producing!

Next lot - this continues through mid-summer 1983, and the Morecambe Gas Field helicopters are the main feature, including their newly completed hangar for Hydrocarbons UK. Note the Helicopter Terminal under construction in the background of one photo. Yours truly obtained the European Regional Development funding for these new facilities, and yes, I'm a Remain supporter! My main favourite in this lot is, however, the early Jetranger helicopter G-AVII, which at one time was being earmarked by the W-S-M Helicopter Museum for preservation, instead of which it went to Australia where it is still flying, the oldest example in that country. Other aircraft of note are the Hubbardair Chieftain; the Norecrin G-BDJR with construction number 2; Vickers Shipbuilding PA-31T turbo; Trusthouses Forte's 125; Brown & Root (UK) Ltd's 125 G-AVVB (they were building the Morecambe Gas Field); and a rare refuelling stop by HMS Yarmouth's Wasp. The Citation belonging to Heerema and the Brown And Root 125 both gas field development related. Those damn concertina doors in the helicopter hangar ….. we've had them since changed , so high and such a wide span the motors could never cope with the drag when it opened them :-)
Do you remember the German BK117 demonstrator staying overnight in the hangar , multi tone pearlescent paint scheme, on demo and up to Aberdeen via Blackpool.
Keep the photos coming

Keep the photos coming Thanks 'Ikarus', sorry about the hangar doors, but I only obtained the European funding and I had no hand in the design. The BK117 demonstrator doesn't ring a bell with me, but I still have three more slide albums to plough through! The following set of photos includes some some early pics I hadn't yet done, but the main event was Saturday 5th August 1983, the busiest passenger flights day of the year with inbound punters for the 'delights' of Blackpool. Looking at those photos, it's great to see how busy the airport was. Without pointing any fingers, I am appalled at the way the airport has been allowed to run down to the point it is today. I do wonder whether it will survive too much longer after this crisis, though.

I am alone in looking at these fantastic pictures and thinking that actually, Shorts built some decent aircraft. I had forgotten how much of a soft spot I had for the ‘sheds’’, and miss them a little now!

Quote from 'The Likely Lads' TV series theme tune of the 70's; "The only thing to look forward to is the past" So here is another instalment from Blackpool Airport's past when it thrived on GA traffic, reflecting the buoyant state of the local economy and attractions. But now, like many British seaside towns it is amongst the most deprived of areas, reduced to existing on day-trip car traffic fed by the M55. That will be nil in the following months. This set of scanned and restored slides are the ones from my first album that I had previously skipped over. So nothing spectacular, but including a host of familiar aircraft, including a few puzzles such as Chieftain G-WSSC with Westair logo but registered to Spacegrand Ltd. Also Chieftain G-BHGS registered to Jersey European but not flying on their scheduled services?
