Looking at these photos, it's such a pity that Blackpool lost so much traffic. When I worked there in Air UK ops in the late 70s, apart from the Air UK flights, which were invariably full, it was a busy little place. Even in those days there was quite a lot of business traffic, occasional diversions from Warton and the newspaper lift on a Saturday night and the occasional air show. And there were two bars on the airport grounds!

Some classics in there - great pics - My everlasting memory is turning up at blackpool on a rare visit to find I think 3 if not 4 braathens safe 737's present for if I remember correctly a long forgotten TV show fronted by Stuart hall and eddie waring - Je Sans frontiere!!!! Memory fails but was I think early 70's - I am sure someone with a better recall will fill the gaps- maybe it was another event.
The best was the relative freedom of access to hangars apart from one which for the life of me I cant remember - but there was certainly one that positively hated spotters.
Blackpool I think continues to enjoy a wide variety of visitors perhaps not all reported on NWAN - but really feel for the lack of airline services, but Man did come to dominate and easy motorway access further eroded the economics.

Many thanks for the comments, and 'likes', much appreciated.
I did mean to provide some background info to the pics, but forgot. The two "Metropolitan" aircraft were diversions from Manchester. The Viscount was during one of the IOM shipping strikes. The WDL F-27 was an inbound political junket. The Danish and Norwegian flights were ships crew changes to Fleetwood. The Dove and Devon were Warton diversions due to runway works there. The Chipmunk was ex-Wattisham TTF WK622 (the one with the squashed cat logo). Most interesting of all was the Hawk T.1 - at first glance 4 FTS from Valley, but it has a Red Arrows badge on the port side, and a CFS badge to starboard, and most telling of all, a Red Arrows smoke pod underneath. Plus a replacement dark blue rudder from one of the red-white-blue examples.

Great selection of photos there Acklington! Is that a truckload of newspapers I see behind Hotel Tango? Merchantman and Argosy - ah the memories! ...and Victor Hotel, which once took me all the way to Peru on a demo tour! Can you remember what it was doing there? An excellent collection detailing better times at BLK. I always enjoyed working there. Thanks for posting.

Even on the airport's 75th Anniversary open day for the general public he point blank refused to open the hangar doors. And the BAe 748 G-BDVH was a Warton diversion due to a fortnight's scheduled runway works there.

Yes, that doesn't surprise me. I always found him rather strange in that respect. As I mentioned, I knew him quite well from the days of him having a bar next to the ANT hangar, where the air and groundcrew used to go for a drink after work. He was a pleasant host behind the bar, but ruthless when it came to letting people into the hangar. I remember Phil Butler and I many years previously, pleading with him to let us see the Drover that he had bought, but our pleas fell on deaf ears and we never did see it. Local rumour had it that he had once had some expensive equipment stolen from the hangar by 'plane spotters', but I doubt if this was really the case.

A great set of memory stirrers and all very nicely scanned.
I was never a local to Blackpool but did quite a few visits in the eighties.
Cheers
