JANUARY 2020 - JLA VISITING AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS

A few minor format changes for 2020:

Movements by Woodgate Aviation Navajo Chieftain aircraft from and to the Isle of Man are back again in the main log, not just a summary at the end.
I'm no longer listing Ryanair's SP- or 9H- re-registration first visits in the main log as they have all been before as Irish. When new a/c start flowing again, then all new a/c first visits will be included. All EI-, SP- and 9H- will continue to be summarised monthly in the 'Airliners' section.
EasyJet Europe Austrian registered Airbus a/c will be included in the main log as visits are not scheduled or routine. There were none in January.
Laudamotion aircraft first visits will only be listed in the 'Airliners' section, unless known to be a new delivery.
Wizzair aircraft will be included in the log on first visit, subsequently all aircraft each month in the 'Airliners' section
Any airliner on diversion will continue to be included in the log, no matter how common visits by it are.

	Sunday, 19th January 2010		LFC v Manchester United 4-30pm.  Layer of dense fog for much of the day.

A really odd day. Layer fog hung around for much of the day. It would appear that most, if not all, the easyJet, Ryanair and Blue Air, Airbus and Boeing flights operated reasonably routinely (the Wizzair flights were after the fog cleared). The morning BE603/604 Flybe Dash 8 did divert for Manchester, but actually landed at Birmingham!

However without sophisticated landing aids all the many biz-jets with passengers heading for the match, plus a few G.A. were frustrated, visibility being below their limits. Around 13 biz-jets, 5 GA and 2 helicopters were either known as expected, or known to have diverted to Chester, Manchester, Leeds, Blackpool and Birmingham. While some may never have left their base, certainly 14 diverted away - just 2 eventually making their way to JLA when conditions cleared. Notable 'losses' were A7-TAA Global 6000; N360LF & G-ULFM Gulfstreams; F-HLRS & M-ORIS Phenoms; N188B & EI-WXP Hawker 800s and G-GETU AW.169.

ABBREVIATIONS AND FORMAT COMMENTS

All times are quoted as ‘local’ time. As the source material is in UTC all times are converted before use. However, there is always the chance of being one hour out, no matter how hard I try and avoid mistakes, especially in October and March, the months when BST/GMT changes over.

30/1357 shows that the aircraft stayed over midnight, departing on the date and time shown

f&t = from and to. Where the point of origin and destination are different, both locations are named separated by a - . Some use of standard IATA airfield abbreviations eg BHX - Birmingham; EMA - East Midlands Airport; DTV - Durham Tees Valley; DSA - Doncaster Sheffield Airport; LBA - Leeds-Bradford Airport; and more occasional DUB Dublin; MAN Manchester; BRS Bristol; CEG Chester; NCL Newcastle, GLA Glasgow and SEN Southend.

G/A refers to an aircraft performing an approach and go-around only, but did not touch down. t&g is 'touch and go' or 'roller' only, not a full stop landing. fv = first visit to LJLA. 'local' is a flight starting and ending at Liverpool, not landing elsewhere n/s night stop, c/s Radio call-sign.

The registrations of aircraft operating on call-signs, especially RAF aircraft on Go-Around are not always 100% accurate. During daylight where a code and direction of Go-Around are given, this means that the registration was confirmed by Mk.1 eyeball (well, usually a digital image!).

Where an aircraft operated on call-sign, this is noted by official IATA 2-, or more usually ICAO 3-,letter abbreviation. If there is no call-sign, then the aircraft operated using the registration. Where there is just one call-sign, the same flight number/call-sign was used both in- and out- bound.

In the final column the operator is that translated from the call-sign designator, which in some cases is not the same as the registered owner. This is often the case for GMA Gama Aviation, FLJ Flairjet and VCG Catreus AOC Ltd call-signs.

'Football related', 'team chtr', 'for the match' or similar comments are generally determined by the times and point of origin/destination and is informed guesswork, not absolute known fact. Very difficult to be certain which aircraft, especially biz-jets, bring fans and which are co-incidence!

Likewise 'freight i/b' or 'freight o/b' comment is an assumption based on aircraft type, point of origin/destination, flight numbers etc - only rarely is the direction freight is being carried, confirmed by eyeball.

The 'S', eg S14, refers to the apron stand that the biz-jet was parked on.

The source material does not name non-registered airfield sites, these are covered by the blanket term ‘private site’. Nor does it identify diverted flights or the reason for the diversion, however these can usually be worked out from other sources.

'WX' = literally 'weather out' conditions below minima visibility or above acceptable wind speed/direction, 'Dvt' = diverted in, 'chtr' = charter flight, Pax = passengers, Del = delivery, Arr = arrived, Dep = departed, pvt = private (location), n/s night stopped.

I do my best to check full type designations, however an occasional one may not be absolutely name and mark accurate. Spotted an error, typing slip, or have further details to add, do let me know by PM or place a post on this thread.

Training from JLA noted on 21st & 22nd using G-EZGE at DTV. On 28th at Nimes, 29th Newquay & 30th at Liverpool, all using G-EZBI.		   On 1st  G-EZUF to Jersey on the EZY7022, but returned 2 hours later due to WX at Jersey.  Replacement flight operated later on G-EZBI.             On 12th G-UZHH to Glasgow at 1749 as EZY9005, replaced on 15th by G-UZHP from Luton as EZY9012 at 2052.				                   On 16th G-EZUW departed to Alicante on EZY7123 at 1734, diverted due to terminal fire, EZY7124 returned from Corvera 16th/034. JANUARY 2020 MOVEMENTS REPORT

CHARTERS

The two weekends with an LFC home game brought supporters from Oslo on charter flights for a long weekend break with match ticket. On Friday 17th an Enter Air Boeing 737-800 brought fans in for the game against Manchester United, then taking them home on the Monday. On Friday 31st a further Enter Air flight for LFC v Southampton FC. They returned home on Monday 3rd February.

FOOTBALL TEAM CHARTERS

A number of domestic games during January brought in aircraft operated by Jota Aviation (RJ-85), Loganair (ERJ-135 and ERJ-145) and Eastern Airways (ERJ-145) only. No European games in January.

LFC flew down for their game against Tottenham Hotspurs on Saturday 11th to London City, using Jota’s RJ-85, but did not fly home after the game. LFC were in London again for a match on Wednesday 29th against West Ham, again using the Jota RJ-85 to London City, but this flew home in the same aircraft from Stansted after the game. They must have used their coach to get to and from the Wolves game on Thursday 23rd. Other games during the month were against Everton, MUFC , Sheffield United and Shrewsbury Town, so no aircraft required.

EFC did not fly down to their meeting with West Ham on Saturday 18th. However Brighton did fly using Loganair ERJ-145 to get to their game at Goodison on Saturday 10th, while Newcastle FC used the services of Eastern Airways ERJ-145 to get to their match on Tuesday 20th.

There were further team charters. Norwich FC flew up using Loganair ERJ-135 to face Preston NE on Saturday 4th, then again the following weekend on a Loganair ERJ-145 to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. In the FA Cup Watford FC and Tranmere drew their first game, for the replay at Prenton Park on Tuesday 14th Watford FC flew up by Loganair ERJ-145. This match was then cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, the team must have gone home by coach, as the aircraft positioned out of JLA the next morning. Watford FC were back on Merseyside on Thursday 23rd for the replay, again using Loganair on an ERJ-145.

Interestingly several times during January an aircraft would bring a team in, then depart with a different club on board. Not often that fixtures work out in such a way as to permit this economic use of fuel. Note hat here I quote the date of the match, for Premiership games the team arrives 24 hours ahead of kick-off.

FREIGHT

After some rather good months during the second half of 2019, 2020 has started rather slowly. Just two larger freighters, both from Gothenburg on the same day, Friday 10th, featuring a Jota Aviation BAe.146-300QT and a new operator to JLA, Ruby Star of Belarus flying an Antonov An-12BK.
Smaller freighters, usually calling the early hours featured just a single Saab 340 of Sky Taxi from Warsaw on Tuesday 14th, a Flightline Metro from Hahn on Wednesday 29th and two visits by Cessna 406s of Air-Taxi Europe on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 15th, both from Hanover. We got a little spoilt some months last year, but not a great deal of income generated for the freight handlers this month.

DIVERSIONS

Another aspect of February that produced little to excite the enthusiast. A single Ryanair Boeing 737-800 appeared afternoon of Saturday 11th on diversion from Dublin due to strong winds there. A few days later it was Storm Bernard passing over the South of Britain that caused two EasyJets and a Wizzair flight to divert to JLA away from Gatwick. Finally during the day on Wednesday 22nd low, ground-hugging cloud around Chester caused a Challenger 604 and an Airbus inter-factory communications flight operated by a Loganair RJ-145 to divert into Liverpool.

On the negative side, as already noted in the log section, on Sunday 19th while the better equipped Airbus and Boeing aircraft operated scheduled services without too much problem, landing through a layer of dense fog, a very great number of biz-jets, GA and helicopter flights with fans travelling to watch LFC v MUFC at Anfield either had to cancel their trip or divert to (mostly) Blackpool or Chester. The enthusiasts here missed out on one or two good first time visitors that afternoon.

MILITARY

Best month in terms of quantity and quality for some considerable time. By far the most notable were 2 visits by U.S. Navy Boeing C-40A Jet Clippers (Boeing 737-700) with 165832 on Wednesday 8th and night stop and 165829 Friday 31st and night stop. The crews calling for an overnight rest stop and refuel en route USA to Chania (Crete) or return. Long may these occasional flights continue (the previous use JLA was during last April and May).

32 Sqdn at RAF Northolt are clearly in a phase of converting pilots onto the BAe.146 as their aircraft called on 4 occasions, all stopping for a while between training flights. Grey freighters, ZE707 on Wednesday 15th and ZE708 on both Thursdays 9th and 30th, along with VIP passenger version ZE700 also on Thursday 30th. A new trend in Hercules operations which was first witnessed at JLA in August 2019 was repeated over the weekend of Friday 10th and Saturday 11th with a Hercules C.5 operating to various airfields around the UK, night stopping at Liverpool twice in the process.

While the Islander and Defender aircraft of the British Army are irregular visitors to JLA during each year their helicopters have become rare visitors. The days in the 1970s through in to the 1980s when formations of Sioux or Scouts, and later on single Gazelles would descend on Speke for fuel have long, long gone and even sightings of Apaches or Wildcats over the NW are now few and far between. On Monday 27th and especially on Wednesday 29th Dauphin AH.1 helicopters from a specialist section of the Army called at JLA for fuel. Finally I’ll include Islander G-BJOH which called for fuel on Wednesday 8th in this section as it is not only formerly ZH573 of the RAF but was operating on a military style call-sign. There was a big helicopter (Pumas, Merlins and Chinooks) based exercise at Altcar during the month, but none of the participants called at Liverpool Airport during the week.

GO-AROUNDS

Hawk T.2s from RAF Valley appeared on practise diversion a number times, but just a sole Texan during January. Busiest time for the Hawks was an evening of night-flying on Wednesday 29th. Notable civilian was a Helimed EC.145 based at RAF Cosford that used JLA for a go-around on Friday 3rd.

EXECUTIVE & BIZ-JETS

I would normally associate January as a quieter month of the year for executive jets, not so this year. While football matches draw some passengers, that is only a small portion of the months movements. The Globals, Falcon 8s and Gulfstreams are the size of early BAC-111s and Caravelle short-haul airliners. While seating far fewer in luxury; modern engine and wing technology have extended the range to enable truly global operations. Including based aircraft, in January alone 7 different Globals, 7 Legacy 650s, 450 and Phenom 300s, 5 Falcon 900, 2000, 7X and 8X, 4 Gulfstreams and 3 Challengers, plus the ubiquitous various Citations and some Lear Jet, Astra 100, Hawker 800, Beech 400 and Phenom 100 aircraft. Look through the main log if you want to know registrations and when.

There were a few twins of interest too, beside the regulars of 2Excel Aviation, IAS Medical, Woodgate, Fly Wales, Dragonfly Avn and Flight Calibration. They included a Norwegian King Air 200 and an American Diamond DA.42 along with an all white King Air 200 right at the very end of the month; while singles of interest included an American registered Saratoga and a Swiss Cessna 210.

Apart from the military Dauphins, there was a Multiflight Dauphin, several Agusta A.109s, a Queen’s Helicopter Flight Sikorsky S-76 (on 30th with Prince William) and a Twin Squirrel operating for Network Rail. The PDM Group helicopters working for British Rail used to be frequent visitors every other month or so, then flying locals for a couple of days; this was the first visit since last July!

RESIDENTS

A fairly elderly Cessna F150G, G-AVEN, arrived on 2nd January, moving in under the care of Ravenair from Barton. G-ECET Cessna T182T moved back in from Barton as long ago as 3rd September, but has subsequently been at Leeds East (still Topcliffe to some) since the end of October until 8th January just to confuse. It is likely to return to Barton for the summer. Another former resident Cessna 182Q N759AU was here for a three week period in December/January but has now returned to Barton.

Of the Helicentre fleet Robinson R.44 G-OGJC has continued to operate from Liverpool or much of January, as has Squirrel G-OGUN. G-SPVK Squirrel reappeared on 27.01.20 after 4 months of absence. Robinson R.22 G-OBIO visited just once in January.

Every year during the first weeks of January we have a paper census of residents to ensure our lists actually upto date. One of our vintage residents, the rather beautiful big engined Cessna C.165 Workmaster G-BTDE is not currently here having departed for Turweston 29.10.19, but it will be returning. Another aircraft currently away from home is Tomahawk G-BGRE which left for Gloucester 02.10.19.

STAR OF THE MONTH

Last month I highlighted a number of multiples while leading to my decision. This month too, there are multiples to highlight. 3 BAe.146s on the apron at the same time is a rare event and on Thursday 30th featured Jota Aviation’s G-JOTR (yes I know, it is actually an RJ-85), ZE700 and ZE708 for 45 minutes during the afternoon. While there were no less than 4 Globals on the apron at the same time between Saturday 18th and Monday 20th with 9H-VJM (following repair and before departure on 25th), G-OUEG (arrived Thursday 16th then parked for a week), resident M-PORT (present for much of the month) and N627JW (18th to 20th). While 2 different U.S.Navy Boeing C-40s during the same month are notable, my star movement of the month can only be awarded to the aging Ruby Star of Belarus Antonov An-12BK, EW-483TI, here for 30 hours on Friday 10th and night stopped.
