LIVERPOOL (SPEKE) AIRPORT IN THE 1950’s – AN OVERVIEW TO INTRODUCE THE VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS 1950-1959. This thread aims to share an archive of material relating to visiting aircraft movements at Speke during the 1950s decade that was researched at the end of the decade by Phil Butler and kept by him since. This is the first time that the information has appeared in print and is part of a heritage of information relating to aircraft movements at Liverpool Airport that has been collected continuously since then without break from the 1950s to the present day. INTRODUCTION TO LIVERPOOL AIRPORT IN THE ‘50s DECADE In brief histories of the Airport the immediate Post-War period and the 1950s decade are glossed over as a time of stagnation, with little change and a lack of competition and investment which only came following the take-over of the Airport operation in January 1961 by Liverpool City. There was investment and change to the infrastructure, buildings and equipment by the Ministry of Transport Civil Aviation, along with private enterprise developments, but there were also set-backs and closures too – two steps forward, one step back, just as seems still the case at times today! A few paragraphs on some aspects of the Airport and services will help set the scene for the decade. AIRPORT OWNERSHIP AND MANAGEMENTThe Airport remained effectively nationalised, under Government control through the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation throughout the 1950s decade. In April 1953 there were talks and an offer on favourable terms to return the Airport to City Council control. The offer was turned down, and it was not until January 1961 that the City took back control of the Airport. It is generally accepted now that if the Airport had returned to local control in 1953 there would have been earlier and more rapid development of facilities and greater encouragement of airlines and routes than was the case. However, there were changes and improvements made to the Airport while under MTCA management which need mentioning. TERMINALThe terminal, completed in ‘Art Deco’ style just at the outbreak of War in 1939 was still relatively modern – new post war airport terminals in Britain were not, with the exception of Queen’s Building Heathrow, constructed during the 1960s. The terminal at Speke was still quite suitable to handle Dragon Rapide, Dakota, Viking and even Skymaster and Viscount loads comfortably; larger aircraft could not operate from the (yet to be extended) 5,127ft main runway on a regular basis. In the winter of 1957-58 the east wing, which was originally intended as a hotel, was structurally altered to provide additional space for passengers, check-in and baggage handling. The next major internal rebuild was even more extensive in 1962-64. The terminal building being referred to is today the Crowne Plaza Hotel. APRONS, TAXIWAYS AND RUNWAYSThe runways, taxiways (which were little more than widened perimeter track) were all laid down during wartime, in a hurry with limited materials. It became clear post-war that the runways and taxiways would not stand up to repeated use by the heaver and larger post war developed airliners. The need was realised long before the finance and will to take action brought about change. First was the re-laying and extension outward from the terminal of the main apron and changes to the taxiways leading from it in 1948. However it was not until late 1956 and well into 1957 that the main runway was dug up and re-laid with suitable foundations and improved drainage. For a number of years before this, heavier aircraft such as the Skymaster, Viscount and even Ambassador were restricted in their visits – not dissimilar to the situation repeated between 2002-2006 when four-engined wide-body movements on 09/27 were accepted (or refused) on a case by case basis due to a potential to damage the edges and threshold area. For a while, as the then main runway was being re-laid a parallel grass strip could take aircraft upto Dakotas in size. The opportunity to extend 08/26 towards the River was not taken until 1962 and the cross-runway 17/35 was not extended until 1966 as part of the project to link with the 1966 south airfield ‘new’ runway 10/28 (now 09/27). However of the three original ‘hard’ runways, the second longest runway 04/22, was not re-laid and was closed to all aircraft traffic in 1958. HANGARSSpeke had a legacy of a number of hangars mostly constructed pre-war as part of the terminal development, for the RAF and Lockheeds during the lead-up to war-time. Down towards the river the aero clubs, Dragon and Federated Air Transport used the original 1930’s No.50 and the pre-war aero club hangar No.54. Starways initially used No.3 on the Western Apron before moving to a larger hangar No.85 they built in 1958-59 alongside Speke Boulevard, close to across the end of the former 22 runway, sort-of behind No.2 hangar. At their peak Airwork Ltd used Hangars 1, 2 and 6, although BEA retained a section of No.1 hangar for line maintenance on Dakotas. Indeed it was the availability of good quality large hangars that had attracted Airwork to Liverpool. Other large hangars such as No.4, 5, 39 and 34 had little direct aviation use for much of this period. LANDING AIDSAt the start of the decade, Speke had the use of a (then) state-of-art GCA ‘talk-down’ radar, housed in a large mobile trailer mounted close to the centre-point of 08/26. However as Ringway’s traffic grew and Speke’s traffic stagnated, so this aid, vital in times of poor weather, was transferred by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to Ringway on the final day of 1950. Speke which had previously operated 24 hours, now closed overnight. At times of restricted visibility Speke moved from a position of accepting diversions to having aircraft regularly divert away. This trend was partially ended by the introduction of a Decca 424 primary radar during the second half of 1955, a radar that went on to serve Liverpool ATC for very many years, indeed up until 1986. This augmented the NDB and increased the safety of performing procedural approaches in poor weather. An ILS system only came to Liverpool with the new runway 10/28 in 1966. AIRLINES AND ROUTES BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS (BEA)Throughout the decade BEA operated between Manchester/Ringway, Liverpool/Speke, Isle of Man/Ronaldsway and Belfast/Nutts Corner. Initially with Dragon Rapides, then mostly Dakotas, before an all Dakota/Pioneer (a Dakota modified to BEA specifications) operation for the last few years of the decade. For summers, 1953 and 1954, BEA operated a Viking from and to the Isle of Man on Saturdays. BEA also operated a Jersey summer schedule from the late 1940s, which in 1951 ran once weekly on Sundays. They did not operate the service in 1952 after objections by Cambrian. Supported by the Welsh Office (the Jersey connection onwards from Cardiff was considered essential for the Speke-Cardiff to be viable). BEA last operated a Liverpool-London link in the late 1940s, although proposals sometime in the early/mid ‘50s for an Ambassador service Northolt-Speke-Nutts Corner were scuppered by Speke’s runway having a lower than required LCN (a measure of load-bearing strength) at the time. BEA did select Liverpool as the Northern Terminus of the world’s first sustained helicopter scheduled service, between Cardiff and Liverpool, with an optional stop at Wrexham. This service commenced on 1st of June 1950 and operated until 31st March 1951. It was replaced by Cambrian Air Services operating in conjunction with the Welsh Office to link North and South Wales. For more visit: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/7003AER LINGUSAer Lingus were another constant throughout the decade, operating from Dublin. Dakota aircraft were the mainstay during the early and mid ‘50s, with some use of Bristol Wayfarer (in 1952) and Bristol Freighter aircraft, then occasional use of Viscounts from 1958 before the introduction of their new Fokker Friendships winter 1958/59. From 31st March 1959 all schedules to Dublin were operated by Friendships (with occasional Viscounts) although Dakotas were still used on extras, charters and freight flights. As a result, during the last year of the decade and into the first years of the ‘Sixties, Aer Lingus was the only Liverpool airline operating turbo-prop, pressurised aircraft from the airport. For more visit: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/7090STARWAYSStarways moved to Speke from Blackpool/Squires Gate early in 1950 when the Wilson family of Gateacre injected finance into the company. In 1950 their principal equipment was an Avro 19, and a single Douglas DC-3 acquired in the Autumn. Right from the outset they had big ideas and in the period 5th April 1950 through to September 1950 ran a Liverpool to London/Northolt scheduled service with the Avro. The Avro 19 and the DC-3 were used on charter work, including during Summer 1951 I/T flights to Lourdes for CTA (another Wilson family company). A change in route licensing regulation enabled Starways to operate a scheduled service Liverpool to Tarbes (for Lourdes) June to September 1952, and also for the summer of ’52 to the Isle of Man, both services using the DC-3. In 1953 the Lourdes programme was extended and Bilbao introduced as a new destination, although the Isle of Man service was dropped due to a Glasgow-IoM licence being refused (the service being the means to get a Dakota to and from Glasgow to operate a Lourdes flight). In 1954 Starways added Nice, and in 1955 from March a 3 flights per week service Liverpool to London/Heathrow. For summer 1958 the airline had 3 Dakotas and 2 Skymasters. The introduction of the larger Skymaster was timely to take advantage of the Lourdes Shrine Centenary Year, and they operated I/Ts to Basle, Palma, Santander and San Sebastian, mainly for CTA. In 1959 Starways established a summer only domestic link to Newquay from 13th June. During 1959 the fleet consisted of 2 Skymasters and 3 Dakotas. More elsewhere on nwan: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/3790CAMBRIAN AIR SERVICES later CAMBRIAN AIRWAYSWith the experimental scheduled helicopter service Liverpool to Cardiff ending in March 1951, Cambrian moved onto the route Liverpool/Speke to Cardiff/Pengam Moors from 7th April 1951 with Dragon Rapide aircraft. On weekdays this flight connected at Cardiff for Jersey. In 1952 they successfully fought off BEA’s annual application for Jersey summer scheduled service, and offered both Jersey as Guernsey, mainly as extensions to the Cardiff service. Doves were introduced in 1953, while during 1954 Cardiff Airport was moved from Pengam Moor to the current site at Rhoose. During 1955 Liverpool services were still operated by Doves but now supplemented by two newly acquired Dakotas according to loads. The Airline was rebranded Cambrian Airways early in the year (formerly Cambrian Air Services, CAS). In 1956 Cambrian acquired 3 DH Herons, the type used depended on booked loads. In 1957 the services were operated by Heron or Dakota. However at the end of 1958 Cambrian were in severe financial difficulties and Liverpool services withdrawn. Cambrian was rescued with an injection of capital by B.E.A. and in March 1959 restarted Cardiff and Jersey services using former BEA Dakota aircraft. Actually having recently seen a 1953 CAS fares table, services that year ran to Cardiff, Bristol, Jersey and Guernsey and a connection to Southampton. For summer 1956 and winter 1957/58 Cambrian Airways route maps showing direct flights to Cardiff, Bristol, Jersey and Guernsey and connections via Liverpool onwards to IoM, Belfast and Dublin with a change of Airline. AIR MOTIVE, WRIGHT AVIATION & FEDERATED AIR TRANSPORT Three different small Speke based companies. The smallest was Air Motive was formed at Speke, with their sole aircraft, a Dragon Rapide arriving in January 1950. This aircraft was employed on providing pleasure flights and for Army Co-Operation flights. The Dragon Rapide was sold in June 1952 and the owners concentrated on other aspects of aviation. Wright Aviation expanded out of their Flying School to operate a pair of Dragon Rapides and a Miles Gemini on a number of contracts and general charter during 1952 and 1953 until their assests were absorbed into Dragon Airways’s operation in early 1954. Federated Air Transport was a small Liverpool based company, run by Reg Gates and operated for associated company Federated Fruit. ‘Feds’ commenced operation with a Dragon Rapide late 1953, joined by two Avro Anson 1s early in 1954. The main cargos were mushrooms from Ireland and newspapers out to Dublin and Isle of Man along with the occasional passenger. Throughout the’ 50s they operated Anson and Dragon Rapide aircraft, with operations continuing through until early 1961 when operation ceased following a change in air transport regulations. For more on Air Motive, Dragon & Federated: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/3394MANX AIR CHARTERAs is still the case today, airlines moved into Speke promising much, only to move out. Manx Air Charter obtained a licence to operate from the Isle of Man for summer 1954, however did not return the following year, indeed may well have not completed the whole summer season of 1954. DRAGON AIRWAYS and HUNTING CLANAt the very end of 1953, formerly Pwllheli based Dragon Airways took over the Liverpool Flying Club and Wright Aviation’s aircraft and so moved their base to Liverpool. Scheduled flights to Pwllheli operated summer 1954, but likely not to a regular timetable using Dragon Rapides, Gemini and Auster aircraft. Pleasure flying at Pwllheli and Speke and contract work for the Air Ministry provided much of their income. The airline needed more suitable equipment to be able to operate proper scheduled services, so ordered 3 Herons from de Havilland, the first delivered to Speke in May 1955 and used to operate services from Stoke/Meir to Jersey and Isle of Man. With a second aircraft they started a Speke to Glasgow/Renfrew service on 28th June 1955 which continued through into the winter season, but had ceased before summer 1956. During summer 1955 Dragon entered into a cooperation agreement with Newcastle based Hunting-Clan, which on November 1st 1955 resulted in Dragon moving their base to Newcastle. During summer 1955 Dragon had applied to A.T.A.C. for permission to operate a Liverpool to Paris/Le Bourget scheduled service, and although they no longer had a base at Liverpool, from June 1956 they operated a Viking aircraft twice weekly Newcastle-Liverpool-Paris. However with losses mounting Dragon Airways were taken over and absorbed into Silver City Airways February 1957 so the Paris service was not repeated summer 1957. OTHER AIRFIELD ACTIVITIES AIRWORK LTD.Airwork Ltd between November 1952 and February 1958 provided a great deal of employment at the Airport – and in the process a great deal of interest for the enthusiast. During this time they worked on over 100 F-86 Sabres, probably 30 Vampire NF.10s, likely 7 Lockheed T-33As, Doves for Iraq Petroleum, cared for 3 Bristol 170 Freighters and civil converted two Dakotas for Sudan Airways. At the end they desperately sought further contracts for work on Hasting and Neptune aircraft to keep their Liverpool workforce in employment, but to no avail. At the height of their business they occupied most of No.1 and all of No.2 and No.6 hangars. FLYING SCHOOLS AND GENERAL AVIATIONWright Aviation Ltd was formed at Hooton Park and operated a fleet of Dragon Rapide, Auster and Hawk Trainer aircraft. They commenced operations at Speke November 1949, and moved their whole operation across from Hooton Park in April 1950. The Dragon Rapides, joined later by a Miles Gemini operated charters and pleasure flights, the Hawk Trainers on Air Ministry contracts and the Austers, supplemented by a Tiger Moth for pilot training. In a move to recover a debt, the operation closed down in November 1953 and was merged by the creditor with Dragon Airways who moved into Speke Airport and took over the flying club, Air Ministry contracts, pleasure flying work and moved into scheduled services. On 1st November 1955 Dragon were taken-over by Hunting-Clan and moved out to Newcastle. Most of the flying club aircraft remained at Speke and were purchased by ‘Jack’ Green who continued the flying club operation under a new name. He was killed in a tragic flying accident end of May 1958 and the operation continued by his brother Bert Green with the last of the Austers, Tiger Moths and a Proctor. However the club’s activities slowly wound down until it ceased trading in 1962. For more on nwan forum: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/6920/liverpool-flying-clubs-50sThere were a couple of Auster aircraft kept at Liverpool by private owners by the end of the decade, Eric Bemrose and W.T.Clarke (both from 1957) and an Irish Bonanza from 10/57. An American owned Bellanca Cruisair arrived in 1956 but was rarely, if ever, flown by its owner. There were a couple of other privately owned aircraft such as a Proctor (1950-1958), a Tiger Moth and a couple of Austers, all were closely affiliated an aero club. Few twin GA aircraft were based at Speke during the 50s, indeed the first (from 9/57) was the first Piper Apache to be imported into the UK and later replaced by a Piaggio P.166 (10/59), operated on behalf of Lord Derby and the Stanley Estate and Stud Company. THum FLIGHTPossibly of only passing interest to airport passengers, the arrival of the THum (Temperature and Humidity Flight) aircraft provided a daily distraction for the enthusiast. For the period their aircraft called at Liverpool the flight was based at RAF Woodvale and operated Spitfire PR.19, supplemented then replaced by Mosquito TT.35 aircraft. The flights started to call at Speke regularly around August 1953; the last Spitfire flight was on 10th June 1957, the final Mosquito operation on 1st May 1959. The aircraft used Speke in order to pass hand their readings onto the Met Office for direct transmission onward by Telex machine without the delay of bringing them from Woodvale by road. More on: (link) OUR VISITING AIRCRAFT RECORDS It was during 1956 that Liverpool based aviation ‘spotters’ first formed an association – the Merseyside Group of Aviation Enthusiasts (MGAE) to compile and exchange information. This led to both an increased interest in recording the current aircraft activity and in tracing interesting aircraft movements in the past. A working relationship with ATC and Airport Management was established to permit access to ‘Tower’ records that has continued to the present day. So since 1957 we have a complete and full account of every visit by a visiting aircraft – some record to be proud of! They also had access to the ATC ledgers for the whole of the decade, less a few ‘missing’ months. I have two separate transcriptions from these older ledgers – one compiled by Phil Butler in mid-1958 is near complete, the other by person unknown (but kept and passed onto me by Alan Pritchard) has more aircraft listed, but a number of large gaps in coverage and only reaches 1954. Also from Alan Pritchard, I have an anonymous ‘spotters’ record of ‘cops’ at Speke 1954-1955. I have woven these three sources, plus some further Phil Butler information on Grand National Days which he put together for MSAE Flypast in 1969 together to create these Visiting Aircraft Logs for the 1950s. Those for 1950 to 1956 are ‘highlights’, 1957 has most, but not all, visiting aircraft movements, while 1958 and 1959 list all visiting aircraft, with 1959 being the first year to attempt to include each different airliner visiting, including those on scheduled services. There are limitations, which need to be stated: LIMITATIONS & DRAWBACKSFor the period 1950 to 1956 the logs just ‘highlight’ the more interesting, irregular visitors. No attempt was made to include resident light aircraft, resident airlines, regular visitors or aircraft used on scheduled flights by BEA, Cambrian, Aer Lingus, Dragon etc. This is partially corrected here by the airline notes and a listing of resident aircraft, using details that are known. Source a – the Phil Butler Logs are the most complete in coverage time-wise, the highlights tending to concentrate on airliners, overseas registered visitors and the more unusual military aircraft in the early 50s and all military aircraft by the mid-50s. An added complication when recording airfields being the use of 4-letter airfield designators throughout, including an earlier (upto March 1958) system I was unfamiliar with, even the current (since March 1958) system includes some codes long since disused or changed. Where both I and Phil Butler have failed to decode an airfield designator, I have used it in the hope it can be translated in the future. I have also added details from MGAE/MSAE ‘Northern Aeronews’ and then ‘Flypast’ magazines regarding operators and reasons for the visit where commented on in the monthly ‘highlights’ listing, so from late 1956 onwards. Phil’s‘highlights’ list from 1950 to 1955 was transcribed into a note-book during autumn 1958. With the formation of the MGAE in 1956 and from the end of the year a monthly newsletter, Speke movements notes were compiled likely near weekly just a few days after the events being initially recorded by ATC. Source b – origin unknown, but clearly using the same source material as Phil Butler, but was unable to locate as many of the ATC Ledgers. While coverage is less complete time-wise, he recorded the first occasion he came across each aircraft registration – so many light aircraft types and more common military ones are included. The list starts late 1950 and ends early in 1954 (with gaps). Both sources a and b include what can now be shown to be errors. Clearly both lists were copied from original hand-written notes, and in-turn had been transcribed from hand-written ledgers, written in varying handwriting styles and which contained occasional incorrect or partial information. Indeed the problem of translation from Phil’s speedily written notes in tiny print compiled using a fountain-pen (no fine-point reliable BIC Biros in the 50s!) has made this transcription onto PC digital media far from easy. I’ve usually noted whenever errors are apparent or where I cannot be sure of the detail. In the early years for much of the time only the registration was listed, I’ve had to add the type and operator from modern reference books/internet. Source c – origin unknown, but clearly a spotter’s list of ‘cops’ at Speke, Burtonwood, Hooton, Hawarden, Ringway and Stretton. I’ve taken out the scheduled service airliners, club and light aircraft along with the Airwork Sabres and Vampires as they were often not seen on the day of first arrival. I have though used his notes on squadron markings etc for these aircraft. Covering the period 1954-1955, I’ve woven this record into Phil Butler’s source a material . Source f – articles in Flypast magazine, mainly one by Phil Butler in April 1969 listing Grand National Day visitors from his own spotting records rather than the ‘highlight’ log list. Source i- information gleaned from articles in MAS ‘Flypast’ written some time after the ‘50s and information gleaned on the Internet. Source t – another source - For the period 1st October 1958 to 31st December 1959 the passenger, freight and mail ledger has survived in the Liverpool Record Office. From this passenger and freight totals have been added to the details from Phil Butler’s visiting aircraft logs. Unfortunately these records do not show the point of origin or destination, just a flight number, so are of no help in working out where the aircraft of Starways were flying to and from. The criteria for selection did change with time, also where additional material has been added, the logs as presented here are somewhat inconsistent as to what is included/omitted. What is presented here is the only the detailed account of movements at Liverpool Speke that is available some 65 years on. A rare and precious record, especially now that presentation is upgraded from notebook to digital. A WINDOW TO THE PASTDespite the inconsistencies in what is included as ‘highlights’ each year, and indeed month to month, and the problem with inaccurate source information at times, what I am presenting here is an absolutely fascinating ‘window’ into what aircraft and operators were to be seen by the enthusiast at Speke throughout the 1950s, with a much more complete ‘picture’ for the last couple of years of the decade. Look for the Wellingtons, Lancasters, Halifaxes, Yorks, Skymasters, Vikings, Oxfords, Ansons, Spitfires, Mosquitos, Canberras, Sabres, Vampires, T-33As and early helicopter activity. A couple of types will likely get even the more knowledgeable reaching for Wikipedia! The NC.702 Martinet, MD-312 Flamant, Miles Martinet, Hirel Dubois HD.32 being some that only a few will be familiar with. ILLUSTRATIONSI would just be delighted if more photos of this period can be aired on nwan forum. What appear to be very ordinary and even damaged prints/negatives can be restored digitally into very acceptable images. If you cannot do this yourself, drop me a PM as I will only be too pleased to help. I find this a fascinating period of British aviation history which deserves more coverage before the information is lost forever. I am well aware that several extensive threads featuring 1950s images that I have posted in the past have suffered 'vandalism' due to the internet image host breaking their promises and changing the conditions of use eg Photobucket, TinyPics and Gurl/Google. I will get most of these back visible again shortly - but it is a very long job with something between 1,500 and 2,000 images involved. Rather than delay posting the Airport Logs further, I'll post the text now (some has been ready 3 years or so) and sort out the images later. If you have anything to add or correct, please get in touch by PM. THANKS, CREDITS AND COPYRIGHT This work is entirely due to the research and notes made during the latter 1950s by Phil Butler, added to by two lists of unknown authorship, but kept and passed onto me by Alan Pritchard. Many of the illustrations incorporated into the posts are thanks to collections loaned to me by Alan Pritchard, Ian Foster and what are known as the ‘NWAN Collection’ and the ‘MAS Collection’ of assorted prints . These Visiting Aircraft Logs for each year of the 1950s decade typed onto electronic media by Brian Jones during 2016/17 and published on nwan forum 2018 after extensive checking. I have no problem with this material being printed out and kept for private use. Equally I have no problem with individual details being abstracted and used in other research, provided that due credit is given. These annual aircraft logs should not be copied, pasted and re-used in whole or substantial part on either internet or paper without prior agreement as they can be considered the intellectual property of Phil Butler and Brian Jones. There is absolutely no problem with the threads featuring the ‘50s Logs being hyper-linked from other websites or forum, again providing due credit is provided to Phil Butler, Brian Jones and nwan forum. For research purposes I can supply the complete decade as fully searchable Excel Files.

VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1950 - AN INTRODUCTION Note that apart from one day, there are few movements recorded for the first 4 months on the year – and then only highlights for the remainder of the year. AIRLINE ACTIVITY:B.E.A. operated year-round between Ringway, Speke, Ronaldsway and Nutts Corner with a large fleet of Dragon Rapide and Dakota aircraft. They also operated a summer only service to Jersey. From June onwards they operated a Sikorsky S-51 service between Liverpool and Cardiff, with an optional stop at Wrexham. Aer Lingus operated frequently from Dublin using a fleet of Dakota aircraft. Starways moved their operation from Squires Gate to Speke during early 1950 with an Avro 19 G-AHII operating executive charter flights and a summer only service between Speke and Northolt. In October they took delivery of a DC-3 G-AJDG. Air Motive (Liverpool) Ltd acquired their Dragon Rapide G-AFOI in January and used on charters, pleasure flying and Army Co-operation flying. AERO CLUB AIRCRAFTWright Aviation operated a very active flying school and charter company. Initially at Hooton Park, they partially moved into Speke November 1949, and in April 1950 closed down at Hooton Park as flying there by the Royal Auxiliary Air Force increased. The full name was ‘Wright Aviation – School of Flying’, but they were also known as Liverpool Flying School. 4 Austers and a Miles Hawk Trainer were added to with a further Hawk Trainer during 1950. The company had a diverse range of activities, offering flying training, pleasure flights, air taxi, charter flights along with contracts to provide radar targets for Territorial Army anti-aircraft units and from 1950 scholarship training through to PPL for Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force cadets. OTHER BASED AIRCRAFTThe only light aircraft based at Speke, other than those closely allied to the Aero Club operation was the Proctor 5 of T.Wayman-Hales, and it too was often used by Wright Aviation for charter work when required. GCA RADARThis landing aid was in use at Liverpool throughout the year, and the Airport was open 24 hours to assist diverting aircraft. The facility was withdrawn and moved to Ringway with effected from 31st December 1950. There is not too much evidence of this in the Logs as diversions into Speke by BEA and Aer Lingus would not have been noted, however the numbers of USAF and KLM aircraft noted during October, November and December were most certainly diverted flights. EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:Grand National Day in March brought in around 50 aircraft, many less than for the event in the late ‘40s, but many more than later in the ‘50s decade. The Sikorsky S-51s used by BEA don’t all feature in the Visiting aircraft Logs being on a scheduled service – BEA had three in operation at the time: G-AJHW, G-AJOR and G-AJOV. Types to look for include York, Hastings, Wellington, Valetta, Beaufighter, Oxford, Anson, Seafire Prentice, Harvard, recently delivered Chipmunks and Austers; while civilian types of note include Liberator, Viking, Convair Cv.240, Short Sealand amphibian, AS Consuls, DH.86 Express and a Sokol. Rotary types feature visits by the unusual Cievra Autogyro and the BEA Sikorsky S-51s on their scheduled service. 1 9 5 0 It appears that the records effectively start at the very end of May 1950 (less Sept-Dec 51), with a few earlier ones added in. The 'highlights' list itself compiled and written out November 1958, although more aircraft for 1956 onwards with a near complete visiting aircraft movements are in another Log Book clearly copied from the ATC Movements Ledger on a regular basis. Source a Phil Butler's 'exceptional highlights' list written out November 1958, source ATC Tower Ledgers. Source b An anonymous list of visiting aircraft, likely compiled from the same original source as 'a', but has a number of gaps - however includes more common types, not just the exceptional. Source c An anonymous log of 'cops' between March 1954 and September 1955 with aircraft 'made' at Speke Source f Articles in 'Flypast' magazine eg relating to Grand National Day visitors, or info from PHB's Airport History. Source i Information gleaned from the Internet. Source p An abstract from the ATC Logs by Phil Butler for June & July 1955 only, more visitors than recorded in the 'highlights' Logs Source t Passenger and freight traffic ledgers held in Liverpool Reference Library (just 1st May to 12th August 1952) * Original lists only partially provide aircraft type information, * shows where either (or both) lists confirm the type. Use discontinued early in the 1952 listing, as nearly all types were being provided in the original Logs. N.B. Clearly just before the listing commenced. However from Phil Butler's own spotting log books comes a record of 1950 - immediately Post-War it was a very popular event to arrive by air for, with likely over 400 aircraft in 1947. VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1951 - AN INTRODUCTION Note that the movements only cover the first 9 months of the year, but 1951 must be one of the best years of the decade for variety of aircraft types and operators – civilian and military. AIRLINE ACTIVITYB.E.A. operated year-round between Ringway, Speke, Ronaldsway and Nutts Corner with a large fleet of Dragon Rapide and Dakota aircraft. They also operated a summer only weekly service to Jersey on Sundays. The experimental Sikorsky S-51 link to Cardiff and Wrexham ceased at the end of March 1951. Aer Lingus operated frequently from Dublin using a fleet of Dakota aircraft. Cambrian Air Services (C.A.S.) took over from the experimental North-South Wales helicopter air link on 7th April using a Dragon Rapide to connect Liverpool Speke and Cardiff/Pengam Moor. During 1951 Starways sold their initial Avro 19, but purchased another G-AHIK and continued to operate their DC-3 G-AJDG on charters and I/T flights to Lourdes in association with Cathedral Touring Agency. Air Motive (Liverpool) Ltd continued to operate their Dragon Rapide G-AFOI on charters, pleasure flying and Army Co-operation work. AERO CLUB ACTIVITYWright Aviation’s Liverpool Flying School continued to operate 5 Austers and increased the fleet of Miles Hawk Trainers by one, up to 3, to support activities as outlined in 1950. CHARTERS etcNo idea, now 65 years on, what the series of Halifax and York charters, mostly in February were doing apparently operating out to Goteborg, Sweden. Equally, just why there were a daily series of KLM Dakota flights in September of 1951. Worthy of note is that during the year aircraft operated by Air France, KLM, Fred Olsen, Cie Air Transport and Braathens all operated into Speke, mostly on charter flights. EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:Grand National Day at Aintree in early April brought in fewer, but generally larger aircraft than the previous year. 1951 was a great year for variety of military aircraft visitors. From the RAF came a Lincoln, Lancaster, Valetta, Beaufighter and Spitfire, along with a number of Oxfords, Ansons, Dominies, Dove, Prentice, Proctors, Chipmunk and Austers. From the Royal Navy came a Beech C-45 Expeditor, a Firefly and a Barracuda, all likely connected with HMS Indomitable’s visit to the Mersey and a major display and mock air battle over Otterspool as part of the ‘Festival of Britain’ celebrations. There were also military aircraft from the Republic of Ireland with a Miles Martinet and three pairs of Spitfires accompanied by an Anson on delivery; French Navy with a NC.702 Martinet; French Air Force, the USAF and the Belgian Air Force all flying Dakotas. Civilians types worthy of note were Yorks, Halifax,Halton, Viking, Beech 18, Lockheed Electra, DH.84 Dragon, DH.86 Express, Pervical Q-Six, Miles Aerovan with light aircraft including a Motor Tutor, KZ.VII, a Moth Minor, Klemm Swallow and a Whitney Straight to add to the usual mix of Gemini, Messenger, Proctor, Tiger Moth and numerous Austers. 1951 Source a, appears to have not had access to the ATC Ledger for 1st October to 31st December 1951 Source b, did not have access to the ATC Ledger for around 11th August to 31st December 1951 Source f, Articles in 'Flypast' magazine eg relating to Grand National Day visitors, or info from PHB's Airport History. 01.01.51 Mon ab RD783 Bristol Beaufighter TT.10* 06.01.51 Sat b G-AKSM listed as a Douglas C-47* actually a DH.89A Dragon Rapide regn 07.01.51 Sun b G-AGVF Auster J/1 Autocrat* 11.01.51 Thu b PH-TCL Douglas C-47A Dakota 3* K.L.M. 12.01.51 Fri b FT254 NA Harvard T.2B* 13.01.51 Sat ab NS.17 NC.702 Martinet* French Navy, from Paris/Orly 13.01.51 Sat b LX121 Auster AOP.4* 13.01.51 Sat a EI-AFH Miles M.38 Messenger 2A Mrs A Matthew-Napier, Wolverhampton-Dublin 16.01.51 Tue b G-AHBA Percival P.44 Proctor 5* 17.01.51 Wed b EI-AFH Miles M.38 Messenger 2A* Mrs A Matthew-Napier 20.01.51 Sat ab G-AJBW Vickers 610 Viking 1B* BEA 20.01.51 Sat b G-AJDK Vickers 610 Viking 1B BEA 20.01.51 Sat b KF268 NA Harvard T.2B 23.01.51 Tue ab BV651 Percival P.30 Proctor II* Halton-Squires Gate 25.01.51 Thu b G-AHXM Avro 19 srs 1* Sperry Gyroscopes 25.01.51 Thu b G-AGWA Avro 19 srs 2* MTCA 30.01.51 Tue b VM359 Avro C.19* 01.02.51 Thu b G-AGVA Avro 19 srs 2* MTCA 02.02.51 Fri b G-AMBE Avro 652A Anson 1* Transair Ltd 02.02.51 Fri b G-AHXW DH.89A Dragon Rapide* BEA 03.02.51 Sat b G-AJUJ Auster J/1 Autocrat* 03.02.51 Sat a G-AHXW DH.89A Dragon Rapide BEA 05.02.51 Mon ab G-AKEC HP.70 Halifax C.8* LAC., dep 6th, Bovingdon-Goteborg,Sweden 06.02.51 Tue ab G-AJIZ Auster J/1 Autocrat* from Rearsby 07.02.51 Wed a G-AKEC HP.70 Halifax C.8 Lancashire Aircraft Corporation 09.02.51 Fri b VP252 Avro C.19* Neither VD252 or VP252 ever used, so perhaps VP522? 10.02.51 Sat a G-AKEC HP.70 Halifax C.8 Lancashire Aircraft Corporation 11.02.51 Sun b G-AGZG Douglas C-47A Dakota 3* Scottish Aviation 12.02.51 Mon a G-AKEC HP.70 Halifax C.8 Lancashire Aircraft Corporation 14.02.51 Wed a G-AKEC HP.70 Halifax C.8 Lancashire Aircraft Corporation 15.02.51 Thu a G-AKEC HP.70 Halifax C.8 Lancashire Aircraft Corporation 16.02.51 Fri ab G-AJZY HP.70 Halifax C.8* Lancashire Aircraft Corpn., Bovingdon-Goteborg 16.02.51 Fri b EI-AFK DH.84 Dragon 2* (today this is 'EI-ABI' with Aer Lingus) 17.02.51 Sat b VV307 Avro C.19* 17.02.51 Sat ab N9997F Douglas C-47A Dakota 3* Diverted in, to Prestwick (recently ex PH-TBG) 18.02.51 Sun ab G-AGNZ Avro 685 York C.1* Eagle Aviation, to Goteborg,Sweden, dep on 19th 18.02.51 Sun a G-AJZY HP.70 Halifax C.8 Lancashire Aircraft Corpn. 20.02.51 Tue a G-AGNZ Avro 685 York C.1 Eagle Aviation, (likely returning from Goteburg) 21.02.51 Wed b . . VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1952 - AN INTRODUCTION AIRLINE ACTIVITY
B.E.A. operated year-round between Ringway, Speke, Ronaldsway and Nutts Corner with a large fleet of Dragon Rapide and Dakota aircraft. The summer only service to Jersey again operated on Sunday only.
Aer Lingus operated frequently from Dublin using a fleet of Dakota aircraft, which were supplemented during 1952 by Bristol Wayfarer aircraft which could be operated all passenger, or in a split freight/passenger configuration.
Cambrian Air Services continued to use their Dragon Rapides on the Liverpool to Cardiff flight, with timed onward connections to the Channel Islands (jersey and Guernsey)and to Haverfordwest.
Starways during March acquired 5 former R.A.F. Douglas C-47 aircraft, with a further 2 arriving in May. Over the next few years these were civilianised, 4 entering service with Starways, the other 3 sold. Summer I/T flights flown to Tarbes (for Lourdes) and Jersey. Ad hoc charters using both Anson and Dakota aircraft.
Manx Air Charter operated a summer only service from the Isle of Man using Dragon Rapide aircraft. This was the only season that the operator flew a service into Liverpool.
Airmotive sold their Dragon Rapide G-AFOI in June and ceased flying, although the owner continued an interest in aviation as a consultant.
Wright Aviation expanded its activities in 1952 with the acquisition of a Dragon Rapide and a Miles Gemini, both used primarily for Territorial Army cooperation flying, although also available for charter work.
AERO CLUB ACTIVITY
During 1952 a Miles Gemini was added to their fleet of Auster and Miles Hawk Trainers. The Gemini being added in March in order to expand the air-taxi charter work, but primarily on work as a radar and sighting target for anti-aircraft gunnery units.
AIRWORK LTD
With a large contract to prepare former Royal Canadian Air Force Sabre aircraft for the Royal Air Force as a stop-gap until Swifts and Hunters could be delivered in sufficient numbers. Airwork Ltd moved into No.1 hangar, with the first Sabres arriving during November 1952.
EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:
Grand National Day at Aintree was on the first Saturday of April and brought in an impressive number of aircraft, although again down slightly on the previous years.
The 8 Seafires that passed through in May and June were being flown by Airwork, being ferried from RNAS Anthorn to Gatwick. It is thought that it was a company pilot on one of these flights that noticed Liverpool had good quality empty hangars and was senior enough to bring this to the attention of managers desperately looking around for accommodation for an upcoming contract on Sabres. How true, we will never know, but once you read on you will find the outcome reflected in the movements and comments over the next 5 years as the first Sabres for Airwork at Liverpool arrived in November 1952.
The influx of USAF aircraft in October and December are presumably all weather related. While the Dakotas are no surprise, the Stinson Sentinel certainly was! Other military aircraft from non-British Air Arms a US Navy Super Dakota mixed in with the Burtonwood diverts; 6 Chipmunks on delivery to the Irish Air Corps; a Belgian Air Force Dakota and a Royal Canadian Air Force Beech 18. RAF and RN aircraft were fewer (although the annual list is far from complete) but still included a Shackleton, Varsity, Meteor, Beech 18, Anson, Dominie, Balliols, Harvard and already mentioned Seafires.
Civilian operated types included a York in January, a KLM Convair Cv.240 on diversion, Short Sealand, Beech 18 and SAL Pioneer, along with lighter aircraft such as a Bellanca Cruisair, KZ.III, Miles Sparrowhawk and Falcon Six. Foreign airlines included KLM, Air France, Aigle Azur, Swissair, Braathens and Fred Olsen, mostly operating charter flights. The South African ZS- registration was certainly an ‘exotic’ sighting for the period.

VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1953 - AN INTRODUCTION AIRLINE ACTIVITYB.E.A. operated year-round between Ringway, Speke, Ronaldsway and Nutts Corner with a large fleet of Dragon Rapide and Dakota aircraft. The summer only service to Jersey had been intended to increase to a daily service, however Cambrian contested the licence and were awarded sole rights on the route. During the summer season on a Saturday a Viking operated from and to the Isle of Man, rather than a Dakota service originating at Manchester. Evidence of this can be found in the Logs during July and August. One BEA aircraft of interest does appear in the listing –G-AMDB a C-47B Dakota fitted with a pair of RR Dart turboprops in place of the usual P&W radials. The first turboprop powered airliner to appear at Liverpool, a forerunner of the Viscount and Friendship aircraft later in the decade. Aer Lingus operated frequently from Dublin using a fleet of Dakota aircraft, which were again supplemented by Bristol Wayfarer aircraft which could be operated all passenger, or in a split freight/passenger configuration. Being routine and regular there is very little evidence in the visiting aircraft log of the activity by Aer Lingus during the mid 1950s. Cambrian Air Services introduced their newly acquired fleet of 3 DH Doves on their service to Cardiff/Pengam Moor, and continued with a direct connection through to Jersey and onwards to Guernsey. Starways obtained a licence from ATAC to operate a summer scheduled service between Liverpool and the Isle of Man. Summer I/T flights for Cathedral Touring Agency (CTA) to Bilbao and Tarbes. Wright Aviation during 1953 a second Dragon Rapide on loan from Starways for periods of year added to the existing Dragon Rapide and Gemini. An agreement with R.J.Gate’s Federated Fruit Company during summer 1953 involved the transport to Speke of perishable produce and mushrooms from Ireland. Financial problems during the year came to a head in November, the companies financial assets being transferred to Dragon Airways. Federated Air Transport was formed towards the end of the year by R.J.Gates of the Federated Fruit company of Liverpool and acquired a Dragon Rapide from Starways in December. Previously Federated fruit had transported perishable vegetables and mushrooms from Ireland using the Wight Aviation Dragon Rapide. AERO CLUB ACTIVITYWright Aviation and their associated Flying Club were clearly in financial problems by the end of summer 1953. One of the Hawk Trainer aircraft was lost in a crash near Chester. In November they entered receivership and the assets quickly acquired by the owner of Dragon Airways. AIRWORK LTDDuring November 1952 the first F-86E Sabres for Airwork arrived from RCAF units, a flow that continued in February, with further large deliveries in November and December. I doubt that all arrivals are recorded in the Logs which are a far from full account of activity, there is also confusion as to the accuracy of some registrations too. THUM FLIGHTAlthough it is known that THum (Temperature and Humidity Flight) Spitfire PR.19s had called at Speke while the unit was initially based at Hooton Park, after the move to RAF Woodvale and from around August 1953 the daily meteorological flights called at Speke six days a week to pass on their data directly to the Met Office at the Airport for onward transmission to the forecasters. Being ‘regulars’ these aircraft are generally not included in the ‘highlights’ listing. EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:The Visiting Aircraft Log for 1953 is the shortest for any of the 50s. This could simply reflect less visitors being transcribed from the ATC Ledgers, or it could be that there were indeed less aircraft of interest passing through – I suspect a measure of both as the list is mainly from a single source unlike earlier and later years. There certainly was likely to have been more Sabre activity mid-year than passed down on these records and much more civilian activity by Doves, Consuls, Geminis, Messengers, Proctors and especially Austers too. Grand National Day at Aintree was the last Saturday in March. I fancy there were likely more aircraft than recorded, but commoner visitors so of less interest – or possibly the sharply reduced number of arrivals by air simply shows that the weather may have been dire that year! Despite the list being shorter, there are still aircraft of interest recorded. RAF Shackletons, Dakotas, Varsities, Canberra, Meteor, Oxford, Ansons (likely many more than recorded), Scottish Pioneer with a Beech 18 of the RN. The King’s Flight Viking is of note too. The RCAF Bristol Freighters and Beech 18 were likely in connection with the delivery of Canadian Sabres and spares. DH Doves of both the Irish Air Corps and Belgian Congo Air Force feature, passing through Speke for Customs out of DH at Hawarden. Civil aircraft are poorly represented on the ‘highlights’ listing but still include SAS and Braathens SAFE Dakotas, BEA Vikings diverting in, a Bristol Sycamore helicopter and a Swiss Beechcraft. SPEKE AIRPORT VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1954 - AN INTRODUCTION AIRLINE ACTIVITYBy 1955 all BEA’s Irish Sea flights connecting Ringway, Speke, Ronaldsway and Nutts Corner were operated by Dakota aircraft, although the logs show that there were still occasional visits to Liverpool by the airline’s Dragon Rapide aircraft. BEA operated a large fleet of Dakota aircraft during the 1950s. From a spotter’s notebook (source ‘c’ in the Logs) it is known that during 1954 he saw the following BEA aircraft during the year at Speke: G-AGHJ, AGHL, AGHM, AGHS, AGIP, AGIU, G-AGJV, AGJV, AGJZ, AGNK, AGYX, AGZB, AGZC, AGZD, AHCU, AHCZ, AJDE, AJHY, AJHZ, AJIA, AJIB, AJIC, AKJH, AKNB, ALCC, ALPN, ALXK, ALXL, ALXM, ALXN, ALYF, AMDB,AMDZ, AMGD, AMFV, AMJX, AMJY, AMKE, AMNV, AMNW and AMYB, some 41 aircraft. BEA had more that also likely visited during the year. The summer Saturday Viking flights from & to the Isle of Man, along with noted Dragon Rapide visits are included in the main log, where known. Aer Lingus Dakotas were the mainstay of their Dublin scheduled service, supplemented by Bristol Freighter aircraft. It is known that during 1954 the following Aer Lingus aircraft were to be seen at Speke (from source ‘c’): Dakotas EI-ACD, ACE, ACG,ACH, ACI, ACK, ACL, ACM, ACT, AFA, AFB, AFC, AHG (once del in ’55) and Bristol Freighters EI-AHQ, AHR, AHS and AHT. The final mention of an Aer Lingus Bristol freighter in the Visiting Aircraft Logs is during April 1954 although the aircraft continued in service in decreasing numbers until the end of 1956, the actual last visit to Speke now being lost in the mists of time. Cambrian’s mainstay of the Cardiff and Channel Islands service continued to be the Doves. There is also evidence in the logs of visits by their Dragon Rapides at times during the summer. During March Cambrian moved from Pengam Moor to Rhoose Airport. Source ‘c’ confirms that Cambrian during summer ‘54 operated Doves G-AIWF, G-AJOT and G-AKSK along with visits by Dragon Rapides G-AJCL, G-AKUB, G-AKUC and G-ALZJ. Starways added Liverpool to Nice, via Bournemouth to their summer I/T services. The company sold the last of its Avro 19 aircraft, the company now operating a growing number of Dakotas as the aircraft acquired in 1952 were brought into service. Dragon Airways of Pwllheli took over the assets of Wright Aviation and moved their base of operations to Speke. In 1954 they operated a scheduled service to Pwllheli with the former Wright Aviation Dragon Rpaide, Gemini and Austers, but this was more a way of getting aircraft there to operate pleasure flights for guests at the Butlin’s Holiday Camp. Federated Air Transport, 1954 was the first full year of operation of Federated Air Transport, mainly bringing to Liverpool perishable vegetables and mushrooms from Ireland. The initial Dragon Rapide, acquired right at the end of 1953 was added to by 2 former Transair of Croydon Avro Ansons in March, although one soon departed out on lease. AERO CLUB ACTIVITYFollowing Dragon Airways acquiring the assets late in 1954, Liverpool Flying Club was reformed early in 1954 with 4 Austers, a Taylorcraft, 2 Hawk Trainers and a Gemini. An additional Auster was operate on behalf of the Royal Artillery Aero Club. The fleet was painted in new colours to reflect the new owners. AIRWORK LTDFurther Sabres continued to arrive from West German bases until May 1954. Subsequent deliveries for the rest of the year were from the Airwork facility at Ringway. The first of 30 Vampire NF.10s arrived for conversion work in March 1954. While the contract was for 30 aircraft, the logs show more registrations than that – quite likely some errors have crept in, as the records are from several sources. EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:Grand National Day at Aintree was the last Saturday in March (although confusingly Wikipedia give it as the second Saturday in April!). Main visiting aircraft charter was a Swiss Air Lines Dakota that arrived on the Friday and departed Saturday evening. The Logs reveal a number of visiting Consuls, Doves, Dragon Rapides, Gemini and Messenger aircraft, along with chartered Aer Lingus Dakotas on the March Saturday, but nothing on Wikipedia’s April date! In 2020 the wrong date is still quoted on Wikipedia, although on an Internet search other sources eg Hansard support the Airport Logs with a late March date. Of civilian note was a Swiss Air Lines Dakota on 26th March for the Grand National the following day, Sabena Dakota in October and Fred Olsen with a Dakota and Skymaster. No other European airlines of note. Amongst many light aircraft spot a civilan registered P.56 Provost in April and a Beaver in July. One source states a BEA Ambassador visited on 10th July, a source that does distinguish fly-overs from visitors. However Phil Butler maintains that an Ambassador did not land at Speke until April 1960. Note too a Miles Aerovan in June, a DH.86 Express in September and a Short Sealand amphibian in August. Lots of military aircraft about. Highlight a French Navy Lancaster in January, Dakota in June and a NC.702 Martinet in July. Irish Air Corps P.56 Provosts on delivery and a RCAF T-33A in September. Lots of ex RCAF Sabres are noted arriving for Airwork along with RAF Vampire NF.10s. Plenty of RAF aircraft around too. A number of Meteors around, a Canberra in March, Mosquito in March, THum Spitfires. Training and transport types such as Varsity, Valetta, Oxford, Anson, Provost T.1 and a Harvard. From the Royal Navy an Avenger in January, Sea Balliol in October and a Beech C-45 in August. Finally mention of Sycamore helicopters in January and March. In direct contrast to 1953 (the shortest), the log for 1954 is has the greatest number of entries for any year in the 1950-1956 period. 1954 1 9 5 4 'Highlights' Visiting Aircraft Log[ Source a Covers a personal selection of visitors right through the year, made by Phil Butler in 1958. VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1955 - AN INTRODUCTION AIRLINE ACTIVITYB.E.A.s focus of attention was on Heathrow and introducing the Viscount onto routes to European capital cities. For the second half of the 50s decade the Irish Sea operations operated with little change. Some Dakotas were upgraded to ‘Pioneer’ class, but the network featuring Manchester, Liverpool, Isle of Man and Belfast changed little. Aer Lingus’s Dublin schedule was operated almost entirely by their fleet of Douglas C-47 Dakotas. There is no evidence of the continued use of their Bristol Freighters into Speke in the logs, but they could have done so. Although Aer Lingus now had a small fleet of Viscount 700s, these could not be used into Speke due to the weak state of the runway. Starways obtained permission to commence a scheduled Liverpool to London Air Port (today Heathrow). The route was operated from March at a frequency of several flights per week by Dakota. For the summer CTA I/T programme, Biarritz and San Sebastian were added. They sold their original DC-3 aircraft in February, standardising on the P&W powered C-47s acquired as war surplus, with 4 now available for use. Cambrian Air Services (C.A.S.) became Cambrian Airways on 23 May 1955. There is photographic evidence of one of a pair of Dakotas, acquired November 1954 at Speke in C.A.S. titles. While the Doves operated the Cardiff service they were supplemented by the Dakotas. Dragon Airways looked towards expansion into scheduled services and ordered 3 DH.114 Heron aircraft from de Havilland. The first of these was delivered to Speke in May 1955, a second the following month. These were employed flying from Stoke (Mier) to Jersey and the Isle of Man and from 28th June between Speke and Glasgow. An agreement with Hunting Clan provided further work for the Herons from late June connecting Newcastle to Glasgow, Manchester , Copenhagen (weekly) and Hamburg (twice weekly). In November the company became part of Hunting Clan and their base was moved to Newcastle and the Liverpool to Glasgow link suspended. Federated Air Transport started the year with a fleet of a Dragon Rapide and an Anson. In March 5 former Royal Navy DH Dominies (Dragon Rapides) were acquired, one was civilianised and used by Federated, the others became a source of spares. Main trade was in bringing perishable vegetables and mushrooms from Ireland to the markets of the North West. AERO CLUB ACTIVITYLiverpool Flying Club continued operations with 4 Austers, a Taylorcraft, 2 Hawk Trainers and the Gemini twin. In July one of the Hawk Trainers was damaged beyond repair on landing at Liverpool, while the other was withdrawn from use and dismantled. The take-over of Dragon by Hunting Clan in November 1955 included the aero club and some of the assets removed to Newcastle. AIRWORK LTDIndividual Sabres continued to arrive from Airwork at Ringway until May 1955. The flow of aircraft then changed with large number of ex R.A.F. aircraft arriving from service from September 1955. The final Vampire NF.10 to arrive for conversion seems to have arrived in August 1955. A small number of Canadair T-33A aircraft from Hooton Park commenced in April, and a Turkish marked aircraft from Ringway visited on 18th June. PRIMARY RADAR INSTALLEDDuring the second half of the year a Decca 424 primary radar was installed and went on to serve at Liverpool for three decades. Having their own radar increased ATCs ability to space aircraft and to guide them to the NDB for a procedural approach and talk-down in times of poor weather. Although there is no evidence in the 1954 Logs, in future years there are a number of aircraft noted visiting Liverpool (mainly Ministry of Civil Aviation Doves and Princes) calling to calibrate or for training using the Decca radar. EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:Biggest event for the enthusiast and Airport supporter’s was the first visit by a Vickers Viscount during March 1955 on diversion from Manchester. There were a couple of Douglas Skymaster visits permitted too of KLM and Sabena, along with the first and sole visit of a Boeing 307 Stratoliner. I say permitted as regular visits by these heavier types were discouraged due a potential to damage the ‘thin’ wartime laid-down condition of the main runway (more on this subject in 1957). Grand National Day at Aintree was on the last Saturday in March – and the weather was rather wet that day. The logs show just a few arrivals although one was particularly notable, in the form of a Sabena Douglas Skymaster. There may have been a few regulars in addition, such as Dragon Rapides and Morton’s Consuls and Doves, but being regulars were not noted down, certainly the weather that year was such as to discourage all but the hardiest of race-goers! Look to for the first British F1 Grand Prix to be held at Aintree Race Course, on 16th July 1955. 1955 1 9 5 5 'Highlights' Visiting Aircraft Log Source a Covers a personal selection of visitors right through the year, made by PHB with access to the ATC records in 1958 Source c An anonymous log of 'cops' between March 1954 and September 1955 with aircraft 'made' at Speke Source p An abstract from the ATC Logs by Phil Butler for June & July, with more visitors noted than in the 'highlights' Logs Source f The '20 years Ago' feature in MAS 'Flypast' ended at the end of 1974 when Phil Butler handed over to Tony Williams. 03.01.55 Mon c G-AGVP DH.89A Dragon Rapide 06.01.55 Thu c G-AGYP Auster J/1 Autocrat 06.01.55 Thu c VP967 DH.104 Devon C.1 07.01.55 Fri a WM718 DH.113 Vampire NF.10 from Hawarden, of CSE 07.01.55 Fri c SX980/54 Avro 694 Lincoln B.2 of CSE 18.01.55 Tue a LN-IAS Douglas C-47A Dakota Fred Olsen 18.01.55 Tue c G-ANRD DH.82A Tiger Moth 19.01.55 Wed ac WM677 DH.113 Vampire NF.10 from Hawarden 23.01.55 Sun c WB449/G Avro T.21 24.01.55 Mon ac 19433 Sabre 2 from Ringway 27.01.55 Thu ac 348913 Douglas VC-47B f&t Northolt (43-48913), MAAG London (Bovingdon) 28.01.55 Fri ac WM727 DH.113 Vampire NF.10 from Hawarden 02.02.55 Wed c G-AJXH Airspeed AS.65 Consul 02.02.55 Wed c VM330 Avro C.19 02.02.55 Wed ac 19406 Sabre 2 from Ringway 02.02.55 Wed a G-AGAX GAL 42 Cygnet 2 from Ringway (Cr Barnsley 4.4.55) 02.02.55 Wed ac WM674 DH.113 Vampire NF.10 from Hullavington 04.02.55 Fri c G-AGXM Percival P.28B Proctor 1 09.02.55 Wed c G-AKZO DH.89A Dragon Rapide 11.02.55 Fri a G-AMTS DH.114 Heron 2 de Havilland Aircraft Co, f&t Hatfield 11.02.55 Fri c G-ANIN Auster 5 12.02.55 Sat c G-ALBE Miles M.38 Messenger 4A 16.02.55 Wed c PH771 Avro 652A Anson 12 18.02.55 Fri a LN-PAS Douglas C-47A Dakota Braathens SAFE, f&t Stavanger 02.03.55 Wed ac 19114 Sabre 2 from Ringway 02.03.55 Wed ac G-ANZP DH.89A Dragon Rapide from Stretton, delivery to Federated Air Transport 04.03.55 Fri c G-AJAH Auster J/1 Autocrat 09.03.55 Wed c G-AKDD Miles M.65 Gemini 1A 14.03.55 Mon c 9697/697:GC Bristol 170 Freighter 31M GC-697, RCAF 14.03.55 Mon ac 19190 Sabre 2 from Ringway 21.03.55 Mon c PH482 Airspeed AS.10 Oxford T.2 24.03.55 Thu c G-AMYV Douglas C-47A Dakota 3 Silver City 25.03.55 Fri ac PH-DBS Douglas DC-4 Skymaster KLM, f&t Schiphol (connected with Grand National?) 25.03.55 Fri c X7437 DH.89 Dominie C.1 first noted, arr by road, Federated Fruit for spares 25.03.55 Fri c X7498 DH.89 Dominie C.1 first noted, arr by road, Federated Fruit for spares 25.03.55 Fri ac G-AMOC Vickers V.701 Viscount BEA, from London Air Port, dvt from Ringway 25.03.55 Fri i 26th March - a very wet Aintree Grand National - 1955, just one a/c unusual to note: 26.03.55 Sat ac OO-CBQ Douglas DC-4 Skymaster Sabena, f&t Brussels - Grand National pax chtr 26.03.55 Sat c G-AJBI DH.104 Dove 1 Morton Air Services 26.03.55 Sat c G-AIOS Airspeed AS.65 Consul Morton Air Services 30.03.55 Wed c EI-ADP DH.89A Dragon Rapide probably on del to UK, became G-AHEB soon after 30.03.55 Wed c G-AKSV DH.104 Dove 1 Vickers Armstrongs Ltd 05.04.55 Tue ac F-WGVG Hurel Dubois HD.32 Squires Gate-Dublin, prototype, first visit of type 05.04.55 Tue ac 21022 Lockheed T-33AN first noted at Speke, arr by road (dep 27.10.55) 05.04.55 Tue c G-AIYE DH.89A Dragon Rapide 05.04.55 Tue c G-AKEL Miles M.65 Gemini 1A 06.04.55 Wed c WJ899/N Vickers Varsity T.1 of BCBS (modern source) 13.04.55 Wed c PH645 Avro 652A Anson 12 16.04.55 Sat ac 19172 Sabre 2 from Ringway 16.04.55 Sat c G-ANTD Douglas C-47B Dakota 4 Derby Airways Ltd 21.04.55 Thu ac WP243 DH.113 Vampire NF.10 from Hawarden 23.04.55 Sat c G-AJZS Miles M.65 Gemini 1A 25.04.55 Mon ac 19228 Sabre 2 from Ringway 25.04.55 Mon c G-AMKZ Miles M.65 Gemini 3A 27.04.55 Wed a KJ836 Douglas C-47B Dakota C.4 f&t Henlow (later became G-APML) 30.04.55 Sat c G-ABDF DH.80A Puss Moth 03.05.55 Tue c WN141/45 BP. VISITING AIRCRAFT LOGS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 1956 - AN INTRODUCTION AIRLINE ACTIVITYB.E.A. For the second half of the 50s decade the Irish Sea operations operated with little change, the network featuring Manchester, Liverpool, Isle of Man and Belfast being operated by their Douglas C-47 Dakota fleet. Cambrian G-AMSX fn 04.06.55 (this is 1956 listing) Aer Lingus continued to use their fleet of Douglas C-47 Dakotas on the Dublin route. No evidence in the Logs of the use of their final Bristol Freighter, while their Viscount 700s could not be used until runway rebuilding was completed. The first Aer Lingus Viscount 700 to appear at Speke did so in December on a diverted flight. Starways lost one of the Dakota fleet in March in an approach crash in Scotland, this being replaced in May by purchasing back an aircraft they had previously sold early in May 1954, to keep the fleet at 4 Dakotas for the summer season. The Speke to London Air Port (Heathrow) scheduled service continued. The summer I/T programme included Liverpool to Tarbes, San Sebastian and Biarritz. Cambrian entered into an operating agreement with B.E.A. early in 1956, as a result could now fly direct between Liverpool and Jersey. In March 1956 Cambrian received 2 DH Herons which were used on the Cardiff route. With the delivery of the Herons, the Dragon Rapide was retired from scheduled services, although one was retained for several years as a ‘hack’. Their two Dakotas presumably operated on the schedules from Liverpool, but there is no clue of this in the Logs. Dragon Airways, although now part of Hunting Clan and based at Newcastle continued to operate as Dragon Airways and for summer 1956 operated a twice weekly Newcastle-Liverpool-Paris and return scheduled service. However the Liverpool to Glasgow link was not restarted. In February 1957 Hunting Clan became part of Silver City Airways. Federated Air Transport now operated 2 Dragon Rapides and an Anson. Several further Ansons were acquired from Royal Navy stocks, all being used as a spares source to keep their own aircraft in the air. Also during 1956 the Anson acquired in 1954, but then leased out was repossessed in a damaged condition, brought back to Liverpool and rebuilt. AERO CLUB ACTIVITYThe demise and take-over of Dragon Airway’s airline and flying club assets late in 1955 meant that in early 1956 there was no Liverpool based flying club. A member of the former Flying Club, ‘Jack’ Green set about purchasing 3 Austers and the Taylorcraft Plus D from Hunting Clan. The new club was named the ‘Merseyside and North Wales Flying Club’. A Tiger Moth was added to the fleet, however within a month was written-off and another quickly acquired. OTHER BASED AIRCRAFTDuring 1956 an American owner brought his Bellanca Cruisair aircraft to Liverpool. It very likely did not fly again, effectively stored for many years in the hangar. AIRWORK LTDFurther former R.A.F. Sabres continued to arrive until June 1956, after that there is some exchange of aircraft from and to Airwork at Ringway. By the end of the year, the logs which are now a much more complete recording of the coming and goings, and show many more departures than arrivals. The final T-33A is noted as departing in February. The final Vampire NF.10 conversion is noted as departing during July 1956. Right at the end of the year a Hastings arrived for inspection, however no work was carried out and it left several days later. MAIN RUNWAY 08/26 RELAIDFrom sometime late 1956 and into 1957 the main runway 08/26 was ripped up and relaid with proper foundations and drainage, followed by the cross-runway. For a number of years before this work visits by aircraft such as Ambassadors, Douglas DC-4s and Viscounts had been discouraged as the load weight on each wheel exceeded that of the runway structure strength. During part of the period that work was in progress a temporary grass strip beside the runway was used by the Dragon Rapides, Doves and Dakotas on scheduled services. SSAFA AIR SHOWThe big event for enthusiasts and indeed much of the population of South Liverpool was the first post-war air display at Speke, held on Whit Bank Holiday Monday in late May. By today’s standards a very small static display, but the flying featured a number of formations by service aircraft. The day was marred by the death of ‘Birdman’ Leo Valentin. The next Speke Air Display would be in 1962. More detail about this event on this forum site:http://derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/130 EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:The Grand National was held on 24th March, not that you would know it from the aircraft recorded in the Visiting Aircraft Log. Possibly the weather was absolutely dreadful so kept the punters away? There are 3 different British built airliner types still active in 1956, of which not a single example was around to be restored when the aviation preservation movement got going in the late 60s. The Miles Marathon (8/8, 5/9 and again in 1958), Miles Aerovan (18/6, 11/7 & 1/8) and considering the place it holds in developing British civil aviation history the DH.86 Express (16/7 & 31/7). A type that was the forerunner of a whole family of twin Beechcraft types, the Twin Bonanza first visited (23/7). Some general aviation singles that will have you reaching for Wikipedia are the Foster Wilkner Wicko, Bellanca Cruisair, BA Swallow, SIPA S.200 Mini-jet (at the air show) and Miles Mercury. Look too for larger military types: Lincoln (24/8, 20/9), Beverley (air show), Hastings and a French Air Force B-26 (24/1). A Royal New Zealand Air Force Hastings (13/12) dropping a pilot off is of note. Also a BP Balliol (21/7), P.56 Provost (2/8) and Spitfire (air show). 1956 1956 is a far from a complete list of visitors with common and therefore less interesting types such as Dragon Rapide, AS Consul, Gemini, Messenger and Proctor simply do not appear, neither do BEA and Aer Lingus aircraft as they were regulars on scheduled services. The few resident aircraft and Starways' aircraft are likewise ignored. However the majority of visits by types and operators considered interesting have been recorded, so a much more complete picture than earlier years of the decade, but still not yet a full one. A slight change in format with point of origin and destination recorded as a routine. An * now denotes an aircraft that flew over low, but did not land. List compiled from Phil Butler's 'highlights' listing from ATC records, additional comments from the MGAE magazine by the year's end. 02.01.56 Mon WJ909 Vickers 668 Varsity T.1 Aston Down-Woodvale RAF 02.01.56 Mon WM714 DH.113 Vampire NF(T).10 to Hullavington Airwork, departed 04.01.56 Wed LN-IAS Douglas C-47A Dakota 3 Kristiansund-Oslo/Fornebu Fred Olsen Air Transport 04.01.56 Wed G-ANUU DH.104 Dove 6 Ringway-Ronaldsway MTCA (Ministry of Transport and Civil Avn) 05.01.56 Thu G-ANUU DH.104 Dove 6 Nutts Corner-Stansted on 6th. What a treasure trove. Wonderful logs of some really fascinating aircraft. Interesting to see so many airfields listed that have not existed for years. I can remember several conversations with PHB many moons ago concerning Speke in the 50's and early 60's. Seeing these logs brought these conversations back to life. We are so fortunate to have had Phil be able to copy the landing logs for many, many years; and now we have them preserved for posterity. A huge thank you to both Phil and Brian for making this possible.

Thanks Brian, great work. So many memories and careers started at Speke, where would we have been without it.
