1958 - AN INTRODUCTION
1958 - AN INTRODUCTION
AIRLINE ACTIVITY
B.E.A. For the second half of the 50s decade the Irish Sea operations operated with little change, the network featuring Manchester, Liverpool, Isle of Man and Belfast being operated by their Douglas C-47 Dakota fleet. A few Viscount flights can be found in the logs, mostly weather diversions from elsewhere, although in July there is a single flight f&t the Isle of Man which appears to be on a scheduled service, although not stated as such maybe a substitute type to clear a backlog of delayed passengers. Viscounts at the time were still rare enough to be considered interesting vistors even if on a scheduled service.
Aer Lingus continued using the Douglas C-47 Dakota on the majority of Speke scheduled, charter and freight flights. In March the first visit by one of the growing fleet of Viscount 800 aircraft, which by August and peak season visited a number of times to provide greater capacity, visits still rare enough to be recorded in the Logs. The big step forward into the modern age of aviation was the arrival of their new turboprop and pressurised Friendship aircraft towards the end of the year and their increasing use on scheduled passenger services to Liverpool.
Starways brought their DC-4 Skymaster into service in January, with the first operation being a hastily organised charter for LFC fans to travel to Southend for a FA Cup reply against Southend United. In March a second C-54 Skymaster arrived for overhaul before entering service and in April the Dakota out on winter lease to Air Jordan returned. The London scheduled service continued, mostly operated by Douglas Dakotas. The summer I/Ts now included Tarbes (for Lourdes), Basle, Bergen, Biarritz, Bilbao, Palma and Santander plus short, medium or long haul ad hoc charters.
Cambrian operated to Cardiff and beyond as in previous years using a mix of DH Heron and Dakota aircraft. However towards the end of the year the airline was in deep financial problems with an accumulation of heavy operating losses, their final Liverpool service was operated by a DH. Heron on 25th October 1958. Recued by an injection of cash by B.E.A. they restarted operations in 1959.
Federated Air Transport started the year with 2 Ansons and 2 Dragon Rapides carrying fresh produce from Ireland and also available for charter. During January one of the Ansons suffered an undercarriage retraction accident at Speke when landing on to a snow covered runway. This aircraft was repaired and put back into service, while the other Anson was sold in February and departed. The original Dragon Rapide was sold in July, while in October another Anson joined the fleet, so at the end of the year they operated two Ansons and a Dragon Rapide.
AERO CLUB ACTIVITY
The Merseyside and North Wales Flying Club’s standard Tiger Moth was damaged when overturned at Speke by a student pilot and was subsequently sold. However on 30th May, the Club’s owner ‘Hack’ Green was drowned after the Club’s Tiger Moth Coupe hit a very ‘glassy’ Mersey while on approach. Although his brother, Bert Green, took over the operation of what was now the Merseyside and North Wales Flying Group, the Royal Artillery Flying Group concluded the agreement to operate their Auster during the summer and one of the remaining Austers was sold, along with the Proctor by now no longer airworthy and removed by road. The Group had two Austers remaining in service at the end of the year.
OTHER BASED AIRCRAFT
The four general aviation aircraft that arrived during 1957 to be based with their owners, 2 Austers, a Beech Bonanza and a Piper Apache were resident throughout 1958.
AIRWORK LTD
The final Dove of the Iraq Petroleum contract departed on the last day of 1957, the final four Sabres left during the first week of January 1958, while the two Dakotas being civilianised for Sudan Airways left in late February (one by air, the other by road) and immediately after Airwork shut down their Liverpool facility, through which some 150 aircraft had passed since late in 1952.
THE THum FLIGHT DAILY VISITS
From mid June to early September the Mosquito aircraft used on the daily meteorological observation flight was recorded on a near daily basis providing an insight into how the aircraft were utilised.
AIRFIELD LAYOUT AND RUNWAYS
The project to relay and strengthen the main runway (08/26) and then the cross-runway (17/35) was now complete. During 1958 the third runway of the original WWII layout was closed (date not recorded) and marked with large white ‘X’ markings at the thresholds. The closure of the runway provided the go-ahead for Starways to commence construction of a new hangar adjacent to the threshold at the Speke Boulevard end, parallel to the road and behind the back of No.2 hangar.
EVENTS AND TYPES TO LOOK FOR:
Grand National was run on 28th March. Again a poor showing by aircraft on the day.
In January it is likely that supporters of Southend United FC flew up to Speke for a FA Cup game against second division Liverpool FC using a BKS Dakota. The result was a draw, so a few days later Liverpool supporters flew down to Southend on the first commercial flight by Starways’s new Douglas Skymaster – which is how come the event was recorded. It is possible that supporters or teams had flown before, but if they had used Starways, Cambrian or BEA the event would not have featured in the Logs. The Manchester United FC ‘Munich Disaster’ was the following month, so likely curtailed teams or fans flying to matches for a while. Football charters are a theme returned to in the 1959 ‘what to look for’ paragraphs.
AIRCRAFT TO LOOK OUT FOR:
There is clearly much more civil aviation activity to look for in 1958 compared to 1957. Long haul flights to look for are a BOAC Argonaut in January and a Starways Skymaster in June. Also look for a Skyways York in June, a TAI/Air Inter Dakota in November and a Linjeflyg Dakota in December plus a number of charters flown by Viking aircraft. Fred Olsen was active on ship crews flights, using their Curtiss C-46 aircraft more than their Dakotas. Jarlsberg on Sandefjord was the main whaling port in Norway (to the SW of Oslo). Many interesting diversions arrived in 1958, KLM brought in both a Skymaster and a Viscount in January, Aer Lingus and BEA both brought in a number of Viscounts on diverted flights during the year – a type only twice before seen at Speke before the runway strengthening. Two Constellation aircraft of Capitol arrived on Burtonwood diversion in November. In addition to the KLM Skymaster, also look for the delivery of two to Starways and their use of an Independent Air Transport machine as a replacement carrier. Two Marathons diverted in during August, with one of the aircraft returning to operate a Starways service later in the month. The Fokker Friendship first arrived in December and a week later had replaced the Dakota on many Dublin schedules – the first turbine, pressurised aircraft to be used on any Liverpool scheduled route.
Most unusual light aircraft was an Italian Piaggio P.136 in March that landed on the River Mersey and parked on the slipway of the Yacht Club, just over the fence from the Airport. In 1958 it was not counted as an airport movement (well it wasn’t), but for historical completeness I have included it! The aircraft was making a tour of British lakes and estuaries. Two significant first visit by type are the Cessna 310 in April and Piper Comanche in July – both South African registered. Other, even then, fairly rare types were a Swallow in July, Argus in June, Lockheed 12A in April, Saab Safir in April, Tipsy Trainer in February and a Foster Wikner Wicko on a number of occasions.
Military aircraft feature mostly Meteors and Mosquitos, but also Canberra (July & December), Shackleton (April) and the departure of the final 4 Sabres from Airwork, January. Overseas air force aircraft were limited to Bristol Freighters and a Dakota of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Noratlas aircraft of the French Air Force, along with visits by the Irish Air Corps Dove.
