As per my GA report, we were asked to stay within 4 hours drive of Auckland., in case we had to get our flight back to Vancouver early. The museums visited were open when I visited but with many restrictions.
AUCKLAND WAR MUSEUM
3844 Zero
3844 Zero
TE456 Spitfire
TE456 Spitfire
CLASSIC FLYERS MUSEUM, TAURANGA
By the museum entrance is what looks like a Swordfish, but you can see it is a life size model.
The museum also contains a P40, sadly no markings and my guide did not know what it's mil reg or registration was.
The museum also has a good collection of flying museum aircraft. However, my guide told me that they are kept in another hangar across the taxiway from the museum and the tours have been cancelled before the restrictions from the virus.
NEW ZEALAND WARBIRDS MUSEUM, ARDMORE AIRFIELD
I was only allowed in Hangar 1 due to the restrictions. Officially the museum was closed because the lockdown had started, but the secretary heard me asking if I could get in and she let me have a brief access to the hangar providing I only went up on to the gallery.
Out on the airfield is a DC 3 reg NZ 3546 painted up as a RNZAF aircraft, this aircraft is used for please flights.
