I was off on leave this past week and got out to a few military bases. Here are some photos and notes I took on my travels.
My first stop was the ‘Wings and Wheels’ Air Display/Fly-in on at Wickenby on Sunday the 20th. The only miltary participant was the Lancaster, which gave four spirited fly throughs.

Monday 21st was spent at Coningsby. The 6 Squadron Typhoon’s were not yet wearing squadron markings but did have codes and they were using callsign ‘Turbo’.

Visitors were limited to a couple of Cranwells King Air’s (G-RAFP & ZK454), 100 squadron Hawk (XX329:CA) and two Tucano (ZF137 & ZF169) from Linton.
Tuesday 22nd took me to Mildenhall and Lakenheath in the morning with a quick stop at Cottesmore on the way back to Manchester.
Mildenhall provided my highlight of the week in the shape of a Turkish Air Force Hercules (63-3189). A couple of visiting KC-135 (68-0103 92 ARW & 57-1440 22 ARW) also added interest along with a couple of based MC-130, one of which (MC-130P 66-0220) was using callsign ‘Marco’, which is a new one to me.

Lakenheath launched around a dozen F-15 in the morning. F-15’s of note were the F-15E 01-2004 which wears the 48 FW Wing markings and two of the F-15C’s (84-0010 & 84-0015) with kill markings. On March 22nd 1991 whilst with the 36 TFW, the pair were enforceing the no fly zone in place after Gulf War 1 had ended. One of them (‘010) shot down an Su-22 with (‘015) getting the pilot of a PC-9 (which was accompanying the Su-22) to eject simply by getting on his tail.

Cottesmore was very quiet with only two GR9’s (ZD438 & ZG506) and a T12 (ZH657) flying whilst I was there, all were in 800 squadron markings. The 801 Squadron markings that were on the fin of the Royal Navy jets has now been dropped.
