A family day out from our vacation in Lossiemouth (which was bad planning, it is shut for runway works!). So as we drove past Kinloss so I could get the preserved Nimrod, and I promptly bailed out of the car, clutching camera, bottle of water and half a packet of M&Ms to keep me going all day until tea time. I haven't been to Kinloss since 1963 - our ATC Summer Camp from Newcastle - nothing much was recognisable from then, but I have happy memories of drilling holes for rivets in the Shackleton T.4 maintenance hangar, and of being responsible for grounding a T.4, about to depart on a sortie, when I said "Please Sir, have you seen this fuel flowing down the inside of the bomb bay door?" The crew weren't pleased, and neither were the maintainers faced with a week in the hangar to change a fuel tank.

Over by the hangars were a line of Typhoons, all looking very quiet

Further away were the RAF's first two Poseidons, ZP802 nearest, and ZP801, but things looked promising as both were open with nav lights on. Heat haze was already a problem at 10 o'clock, and I would be well burned by the end of the day

Nothing much happened for the first hour, although the two (temporarily) based RAF Moray Flying Club Cessnas came out to play

ZP801 finally moved, the light wind favouring a westerly departure, not so good for photos, and the only bit of cloud all day chose the wrong moment!

It went off for the day to hunt for migrants off Dover, not returning until the evening, about half an hour after I had to leave! It also became obvious that the second Poseidon ZP802 had merely been prepared in case ZP801 went sick, and ZP802 was soon closed down for the rest of the day.
For the next few hours the only entertainment was an Osprey or two

At long last the Typhoons became active, with three departing overhead - never good for Typhoon photos, but better when they returned for a late lunch. Then another long period of inactivity before four Typhoons took off, by which time thankfully the light wind had come round, giving taxiway photos for departure to the East. Two of the Typhoons were the same as the morning, so only five different examples were got;

This is a list of the ten Typhoons on the ramp, quite a surprising variety of squadron markings;
ZJ917 'WS-R' 9 Squadron
ZJ921 - 9 Squadron
ZJ924 'WS-J' 9 Squadron with Sqdn Ldr pennant
ZJ935 'WS-G' 9 Squadron
ZJ947 41 Squadron
ZK306 1 Squadron
ZK336 1 Squadron
ZK368 2 Squadron
ZK378 2 Squadron
ZK426 no unit markings
The next day we left via Elgin, calling at the first petrol station we found, called the "Buccaneer Service Station"

I'm now back in the IOM, under Covid house arrest for 14 days of quarantine. As if a 300 mile drive from Dundee to Liverpool wasn't bad enough, ending in an agonising traffic jam in front of the ferry Pier Head - who didn't warn us about that when the Heysham boat went sick! We were the second last car on at Liverpool, and only after ignoring a temporary "no right turn" sign and shooting across three lanes of oncoming traffic! My nerves are still shot.
