Some great pictures there, John. Some questions / comments about particular photos..... 1. First picture with the British Air Ferries Viscount - any idea why the light aircraft were parked on 08/26? Only guesses I have are either Grand National traffic or construction on the western apron. 2. Goodyear Blimp, etc. - what was the occasion? The Gulfstream II - jeez, that is an ugly color scheme. You can really see the lineage with the Gulfstream I turboprop. Pretty much same fuselage as the Gulfstream I. 3. The Heavy Lift Belfast - trying to work out position of the aircraft on the ramp. I believe the photo would have been taken from Banks Road. The portacabin thingey at the left of the picture is at the old Gate 2. What is that contraption under the number 4 engine of the Belfast? Another portacabin? If so, would that be down by the gates that Cambrian used? Gate 5? If so, would the Belfast be parked on the eastern end of the ramp - in front of the hangar that was used for International arrivals? I don't ever remember seeing any freighters parked in that area back in the day. 4. Next shot - the BAF Viscount, BMA DC9 and Argosy. Look at all the aircraft in the background - the two DC3's - Air Atlantique? Plus the aircraft on the finger - Bandeirante, Aztec and Bell Jet Ranger. Back in the day, light aircraft clearing customs would often park there, but did they park light aircraft there without requiring customs? Fascinating photo. 5. BAF / Air Algerie Viscount - wow! Look behind the Viscount - is that a Gulfstream I? I can remember Ford operating a regular flight from/to Stansted / Cologne a couple of times a week. 6. Guppy and VC10 - very nice shots.
I take it that this is a teaser for more photos to follow. Excellent!

The aircraft parked on 08/26 would have been a Grand National Day. Possibly 1985, as there was a BAF Viscount that day, but I have it as arriving before most of the traffic parked out on the airfield had arrived. By 1985 08/26 was no longer a runway, simply a taxiway.
The portacabin gate extensions from Gate 5 mostly date from winter 1978/1979 to help with handling incoming passengers during the summer 1979 and 1980 Manchester night diversions while their (then) single runway was under rebuild. The locations at Gate 2 and Gate 5 can be gauged better on some of the other shots.
Twins, biz-jets and helicopters were parked out on the fingers regularly in the early 80s. The 'customs' section of apron moved from the central location towards the No.2 hangar end with the Gate 5 portacabin construction.
The Goodyear airship N2A "Europa" visited on 2 occasions, operating daily (weather permitting) flights for around a week each time. The photo is not during the visit by N2A 5th to 11th July 1979, while N130K Gulfstream II certainly visited in September 1979 it was parked on the Western Apron.
The aircraft parked around the corner of No.1 hangar in the background of the 'Air Algerie' titled Viscount is an Air Ecosse Bandeirante. Do I detect a 'Doh!' moment, N by NW?
As John has been able to date date/registration/flight number for the VC-10 shot, hopefully he can provide greater detail captions for all the photos. I could do a great deal of digging and find dates for many, but would rather spend my 'PC' time working on the annual Visiting Aircraft Logs for 1975 and 1976, bring you those shortly. Over to you, John, half the pleasure in viewing delightful shots such as those you have posted is not just in the visual nostalga, but in jogging the detail around that memory too.
14 'likes' in less than 24 hours must be towards a NWAN record! John, any more shots hidden away in the vaults? While to anyone muttering 'I have photos like those somewhere', get them out, scanned and shared here, please.

Thanks Brian for the information, without remembering dates for each photo, the thing I do know for certain is they are all at Liverpool. When possible I will put more details if known. I just want to share with you folks without delay, maybe adding details later. Plus most of you probably have your own great memories of these photos anyway.

The aircraft parked around the corner of No.1 hangar in the background of the 'Air Algerie' titled Viscount is an Air Ecosse Bandeirante. Do I detect a 'Doh!' moment, N by NW? Hah! Definitely a "doh!" moment, Brian! Actually, when looking at the Bandeirante in that picture from that angle, the vertical stabilizer appears far more swept back than a Bandeirante. I also saw the larger cabin windows, and put two plus two together....

For those wanting to know more about the day in 1977 that produced this great batch of photos, there is detail on an existing thread, although the majority of photos which were once there have been wiped out by my repeatedly making the wrong the choice of photo host. One day, when I can get some confidence that I'm not just wasting time reposting some of my images for the 4th time, I'll repost. However there is much detail in the text regarding the aircraft and airlines involved. derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/28395/airlift-etienne-fans-march-1977There is a post a little way down this link, that links to all threads detailing with 'football days' at Liverpool Airport - and there have been some good ones over the years. Again, many but not all photos deleted by a photo host. derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/29030/football-charters-comparison-threads-index
