December 1969 through to the end of August 1970 saw a number of Douglas DC-7 visits by ARCO Bermuda aircraft. The first couple were with fresh tomatoes from the Canary Islands as an out-of-season vegetable for Christmas, many of the others were with Ford automobile parts. VR-BCT 21.12.69, twice in June 1970, seven visits during July 1970. VR-BCX 21.12.69 & 13.01.70 VR-BCW 20.12.69 & 22.12.69. VR-BDQ 28.08.70 & 29.08.70 Now I've got the '70s decade logs onto Excel, it is delightful how quickly I can find obscure information! The SATA Convair and the French DC-6 were just two of five airliners that brought guests from around Europe to the opening of (a somewhat short-lived) Massey-Ferguson plant at Kirkby on 1st June 1970.

The Hercules was in 1970, CF-PWN/383 of Canadian Pacific came in 4 times in a 10 day period, Tues 30th June, Mon 6th, Tue 7th and Wed 8th July - all the flights were to collect Ford motor components, twice taking them to Brussels and twice to Saarbrucken. The following week we had CF-PWX operating charters for Fords twice. 1970 was an amazing year for the enthusiast with a great number of flights for Fords, employing a wide range of airlines and aircraft types. Balair's Douglas DC-6 HB-IBS called just once in the period 1969-1971, and that was on the same day as one of the visits by the Hercules - Tuesday 7th July 1970 and also on a Ford charter outbound to Brussels. The weather on the DC-6 shot is the same as that on some of the Hercules, so I reckon you had your camera at work on the 7th July, indeed VR-BCT was in that day too, so with all that work to do, it is a wonder you had time to take it out of your pocket. HB-IBS called again on 5th December 1974 - there is no way that photo was taken in December though! Frank, you may have no record of the date, but I reckon I have. Great shots. For a summary of Hercules visits: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/2487and for an account of all Douglas DC-6 visits: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/edit/16962while all Douglas DC-7 visits are summarised: derbosoft.proboards.com/thread/53

Brian,I would have my 📷 with me all the time in work and took photos when it was a slack period or between schedules and/or charters. The best time for me would have been when I did the marshalling for over 2 years,I had more opportunity to take photos and loved my time at the airport due to the various aircraft.

Great. Don't you just love props? Especially big piston ones. That's an unusual place for the BALAIR to be parked.

Great. Don't you just love props? Especially big piston ones. That's an unusual place for the BALAIR to be parked. Not that strange Ron as you can see from the photo a DC-7F will fit in nicely,we also had control of any vehicles waiting for the cargo as they were all in one area. As for the B707/DC8 size aircraft they had a guide line by No.2 leading off the eastern taxiway, there was also a guide line for the Britannia aircraft outside gate No2, parking aircraft outside No1 hanger were the DC-7F is parked needed 2 marshallers for safety.

Wonderful, nostalgic photographs of glorious aircraft from a bygone era...!! Pleased I was around to see some of them and enjoy flying on/having my ears pummelled by those powerful pistons....!! Recall your ears took a couple of days to recover!!
