Being interested in the Vendée Globe yacht race I noticed how one contestant narrowly missed disqualification by getting very close to a prohibited zone off the coast of Cap Finisterre, North West Spain. These DST zones, of which a typical one exist in the English Channel for obvious reasons, are aimed at traffic separation in busy areas. This led me to discover the story of the Andrea Doria from 1956. I have a vague memory of events at the time but nothing of the real detail. With limited aviation stuff around at the moment, I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did, specifically the bit about the lady who was in bed on one ship and moments later, found herself on the deck of the other. www.history.com/news/the-sinking-of-andrea-doria

The other one I remember from that era was the Flying Enterprise, which came to grief in the English Channel in 1952 under somewhat mysterious circumstances: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Flying_Enterprise#HistoryHaving found myself at the sites (above water) of several shipwrecks, I must say I find them extremely eerie.

I vividly remember all the commotion about the Flying Enterprise and the name of Captain Carlsen.

I mentioned previously about shipwrecks I had witnessed. This one was in Gibraltar in 2007, just off Europa Point, for those who know it. It had split almost in two and despite half of it being submerged, there was an awful sound of gouging metal as the waves hit it. For anyone who's interested, the full story is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_New_Flame
