Looking ahead to when I can next get over to Florida I have been thinking of a trip to Key West. (My daughter is there just now on a pre Thanksgiving day break for her job in Orlando... Loving it.) There once was a railway to Key West with an extension to CUBA. Built by Henry Flagler, often known as Flagler's Railway and today in almost every town or city on the East Coast of Florida there are Hotels, Universities, streets and buildings named after him. There is a sort of railway renaissance in the USA at the moment, not so much is Florida as in some other states, but the Brightline company. (Now part of VIRGIN) is operating a high speed service from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, and this is being extended using part of the old Flagler line to Orlando, and then they plan to go on to The Disney complex and perhaps Tampa. If you know The Keys, you will know they are a series of islands connected by bridges over the sea often many miles long. Quite an achievement at the time. If you are short of something to do at the moment, take a read of this article which describes something of the line, and how the railcars were put aboard ships at Key West to continue to CUBA. www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1998-03-08-9803080050-story.html

I first went to Key West in the late 1980s. Being a fan of Hemingway, it had to be done, but it wasn't easy to get to in those days. There were no flights from anywhere in Florida, so reluctantly I hired a car and drove there. What a Journey! Definitely one of the most remarkable road journeys I have ever done, helped by the fact that there are all the different Keys to stop at on the way.
My son was so entranced by it that he went there twice for holidays. He and his wife were into diving and he said it was one of the best dive sites he'd ever been to.

A totally brilliant, mad place. We travelled there by Greyhound bus from Miami, a great trip. Flew in to Miami by BA 747 (got upgraded to Business class). Whilst there did a trip from Key West International to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas National park by DH Turbine Otter seaplane (well recommended). Plenty of activity at Key West Intnl, including old Bi-planes of the Conch Air Force!! Not sure what type they were. A number of C5 Galaxies were in and out of NAS Key West.
