While checking to see if the fog that affected the airport this morning, I checked the Wirralcam website which streams views across the Mersey, including one from New Brighton looking at the Seaforth docks. It shows two ships berthed in the river, including one with an orange hull which has a cargo of five new cranes onboard, which must be destined for the port. It originated in Nantong, PRC, which is located north of Shanghai. They have not started offloading the cranes yet. Very unusual sight. Looks like the ship, the Zhen Hua 26, is used to transport cranes worldwide - the Beluga of the seas. These cranes are not the humongous ones used to loading/unloading containers from the ship, but rather for positioning the containers for surface movement on the wharf. From the pictures of the ship below, it appears that this ship could well have transported the humongous ones to Seaforth as well. Plenty of pictures of this ship carrying cranes located on the website at:- www.marinetraffic.com/en/photos/of/ships/shipid:686111/ship_name:ZHEN_HUA_26Wirralcam website:- www.wirralcam.org

Just saw that the same ship has just arrived at a riverside berth at Seaforth carrying a load of five fully assembled cranes from China. Last time it was there, it was berthed for 8-10 days. It looks like the cranes are gantry cranes than move containers around on and off container lorries or trains, similar to last time. The view from the wirralcam is really poor right now due to the low clouds, but if the sun ever shines, it will really stand out, with the red hull of the ship and the red crane gantries. It really is an unusual sight. Hope this all means expansion at Seaforth. www.wirralcam.org/wirralcam2016/dome.shtml

Pity that we have to import cranes all the way from China. If you go to Buenos Aires, in the old port there which has been preserved like Albert Dock and the is a crane which has been restored, made by Stothert and Pitt of Bath. They exported cranes all over the world: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stothert_%26_PittConsidering China is responsible for the Coronavirus, thus severely damaging the economy and disrupting all our lives, we should be buying as little as possible from them from now on.
