Open Skies: My Life as Afghanistan's First Female Pilot
Book by Niloofar Rahmani and Adam Sikes.
This book is not a chronology of the processes involved in learning to fly; in fact there is very little pure aviation content. We see how this girl's childhood dream, after a long and difficult journey, comes to fruition, eventually resulting active service in places like Hellmund, and in qualifying to fly the C130. On the other hand we learn a lot about Afghani society from before all the troubles when Kabul was known as the Paris of Central Asia to its present sorry state. We learn about the prejudices to be overcome, especially from within the Afghani Air Force, the sacrifices of her family; the opposition of her extended family, and the assassination attempts faced by her parents and siblings to this day.
A very interesting read.
