Thread also includes posts covering visits not only to NMS Edinburgh but also Perth Aerodrome, Dundee Airport & Edinburgh Airport. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND, EDINBURGH. Monday 18th July 2022. Having acquired W&R 28 earlier in the year, examined the entry for East Fortune to see if a trip there would be worthwhile. As there appeared very little, indeed any, change over my previous visit 4 years ago, happened to notice an entry for a museum in central Edinburgh. Having arrived at Edinburgh by EasyJet from Bristol, took the convenient tram into Edinburgh City and wandered around for while before finding the National Museum of Scotland building. Entry was free, and even on a Monday lunch-time the place was very busy with families during the Scottish school holidays. Vast amount to see in a rather complex building to navigate. Eventually found what I was looking for, and was mightily impressed with the imaginative presentation of 5 flying machines in an tall atrium, with a further two aircraft tucked away elsewhere in the building. Identity Aircraft type Further notes Pitcher Hawk heavier than air glider, the 1899 original (BAPC.49) G-ACVA Kay Gyroplane rather oddly is mounted vertically on a wall Slingsby T.12 Gull 1 glider, (BGA.902/BED) G-AOEL Tiger Moth VF581/G Beagle-Auster Terrier 2 Army markings and camouflage (G-ARSL) G-AXIG SAL Bulldog 104 SAL demonstrator colours G-BGXB PA-38 Tomahawk 112 This museum piece is very much a contemporary of all the Tomahawks still active at JLA with LSF & Ravenair! With 5 of the machines exhibited descending 3 floor levels in age order from ceiling to near ground level, I was mightily impressed. Oh for a few more museums with the imagination and ability to display aircraft this way. The SAL Bulldog very much had its own space, a little tucked away, while somewhat unconventionally, the Kay Gyroplane was exhibited mounted vertically on a wall, rather like a hunting trophy! I walked around for a quite a while slowly ascending the floors, getting a different perspective at each level. Camera worked overtime, so just a selection here. For 'Ian531' & 'Bulldog' (and likely others) I'll post a few other exhibits in the 'non-aviation' section (link provided at end of this post). Great place for adults and kids alike. Well worth a visit if ever in central Edinburgh. Then it was time to go back to Edinburgh Airport by tram and collect a hire car for a few days to visit family.

During a couple of days in Scotland with family 'just happened' to pop into Dundee/Riverside and Perth/Scone airfields - not much of interest happening on a cloudy, breezy, cool day. Photography at Perth is so easy from the car park beyond the cafe due to the hump and lack of anything much to get in the way! G-EVIE has worn Tayside titles for a number of years, but is another recently painted in the tones of blue scheme. G-CJPN Cessna 152, presumably a visitor. G-CAHA PA-34-200 Seneca II with a damaged nose wheel leg and supported by on a wooden frame. My visit being between golf competitions at St.Andrews, just the one biz-jet present on the main apron, CS-CHI Challenger 350 of NetJets Europe. The all white Dornier 328 G-BYHG can be seen tail-on on the far side of apron beside the Loganair Engineering hangar, under the tail of the Challenger. The Dornier 328 would appear not to have moved far in the past few years.

EDINBURGH AIRPORT, Thursday 21st July 2022 Preparing for departure, observations mostly from gate 26, 09:30ish to take-off 11:13 Surprised at just how busy Edinburgh Airport was in the morning, with a number of transatlantic flights. Not everything there was seen, log contains a limited amount of 'cheating' using FR24 to obtain airliner registrations. 2-EMBR EMB-505 Phenom 300 landed C-GHQY Boeing 787-8 Air Canada '808' 9H-AMD Citation 560 XLS D-AILW Airbus A.319-114 Lufthansa 9H-LOY Airbus A.320-232 Lauda Europe, arrived D-AIRG EMB-135BJ Legacy 600 Air Hamburg EI-EBI Boeing 737-8AS Ryanair N8AG ? Falcon 7X EI-GPO ATR-72 Aer Lingus N169DZ Boeing 767-332ER Delta '1601', arrived G-BMRI Boeing 757-236F DHL N185DN Boeing 767-332ER Delta '185' G-EZTH Airbus A.320-214 EasyJet N181MM Falcon 8X G-EZTN Airbus A.320-214 EasyJet N489VR Gulfstream departed G-JMCK Boeing 737-4D7F West Atlantic N613LF Gulfstream G-LMRB ATR-42 Loganair N17133 Boeing 757-224 United G-SAJL Embraer ERJ-145 Loganair N17139 Boeing 757-224 United G-TUII Boeing 787-8 TUI N69059 Boeing 767-424ER United, arrived G-UZHJ Airbus A.320-251neo EasyJet Also further biz-jets include a Falcon 2000, Global and a Citation CJ. Biz-jet regns read from heat haze affected images, so could be inaccurate. Also further airliners noted included a 2nd West Atlantic Boeing 737F on freight, 2 x Jet 2 out-parked well away from the terminal, a Wizzair A.321, BAW A.320 and an Embraer ERJ-190 all white, 'Marathon' titles. Not worried about regns, just sketching a full picture of activity. Just a few further general comments. Of the 5 airports I departed from in 12 days (AGP, BRS, EDI, NWI, AMS), the speed of progress through Edinburgh's security search-comb was the slowest and the most chaotic - partly due to space restrictions not permitting full 'snake line' queuing - initially starting as a polite free-for-all mass. Departure to Stansted (on EasyJet G-EZTH) was delayed by 45 minutes due to the late arrival of the aircraft from a Gatwick rotation - the Captain was somewhat critical of situation there. All images taken through glass, mostly to record the registrations seen. However just a few to illustrate: Tall tails galore One of the Delta Boeing 767s landing on 24 at Edinburgh. 9H-LOY Airbus A.320, Lauda Europe. G-EZTH Airbus A.320 arriving on stand 26 at Edinburgh inbound from Gatwick and taking me out to Stansted. One of two West Atlantic Boeing 737Fs and a DHL Boeing 757 day-stopping on freight. Two Jet 2 Boeing 737s out-parked well away from the main terminal gates at Edinburgh. A change of runway end, so we departed Edinburgh on 06 with an early left turn northwards providing a great view of the Forth Bridges from seat 3A before entering cloud to complete a 240º turn for our flight south. The route passing between Manchester and Liverpool above cloud as we progressed southwards. STANSTED OK, does not fit the thread title, but as there was little there but big biz-jets in the NW section of the airfield viewed on touch-down 04, and very little but Ryanair (in some numbers) at the terminal. Did little but search for a loo and race to the station for the hourly train to Norwich (East Anglia airfield locations will have their own threads). One co-incidence noted was that my EasyJet A.320 G-EZTH from Edinburgh was parked next to G-EZTJ! Didn't bother getting my camera out of the bag at Stansted despite airside views across the apron, however had snapped these two on 04 finals to Stansted, just north of the extended centreline. Clearly a former WWII airfield with some GA/microlight activity today.

It's the former RAF Hunsdon near Ware - Bostons, Mosquitoes and Mustangs in WW2
Strangely, in your photos what looks like hard runways with parallel taxiways are actually grass. Perhaps over the foundations of the original hard surfaces, which the dry weather has turned in to 'crop marks'?

Thanks 'Acklington'. Had initially failed to come up with a name, but have now the information to find the entry in an old Pooley's - the ground plan fits like a glove. As you note, it is strange how clear the runway pattern shows on what is officially a grass microlight airfield, with a circuit height (perhaps not too surprisingly) restricted to 850ft considering the photos were from an EasyJet A.320 on straight finals for Stansted 04. On FR24 zooming in and working back down the 04 centreline located it - the googlemaps setting shows it with clearly green runways!
