In France a minor speeding infraction results in a fine of about 40 euro and the loss of 1 point. A French licence starts with 12 points and counts down to 0. After 6 months you get the point back providing no other incident has occurred. I've had 4 or 5 of these over the last 18 years. 6 years ago I went through a red light. Sounds bad. Yes it was true, but actually I just drifted over the line at very slow speed. I was looking for a turning and failed to notice that in my dithering the lights had changed. I got flashed for four points. The expiry time for this is 3 years. So three years after the event I went looking for my points back, only to discover that my most recent speeding fine on 21st December 2019 meant that I had to wait for another 3 years to get my 4 points back. Hurray. I just celebrated three years without any driving infractions and I am looking forward to having a licence with 12 full points again.
