Beemer. The dog and gun would be so appropriate today. How many pubs are gone in Runcorn now. Cherry tree was my life.

Beemer. The dog and gun would be so appropriate today. How many pubs are gone in Runcorn now. Cherry tree was my life. I used to work in there from Dec 02 to Feb 04! Had many a good nights in that place, and a lot of good memories! (even after the skateboard accident on the way home at 3:30am in Jun 03! after doing 14:00 - 20:00 and then 22:00 - 02:00)

I don't understand, "The Dove and Olive was demolished following improvements to the airport in 2003" as the land it stood on has never been touched and still has the concrete base and remains of the pub sign post on it.

There were two large pubs on the river side of Hale Road, both now demolished. One was beside the Dungeon Road junction and the former carpark and some walls can still be traced. This is beside the junction that provides access to Viscount Road and the General Aviation area and across the road from the end of Eastern Ave. There was another Public House further to the west, between the junctions of two lanes truncated by the runway in 1966. One is a section of Oglet Lane, across the road from the end of Western Ave. These lanes provided access to the Speke ATC hut and the initial 1984 Tower and Fire Station. On Google Earth, both lanes can be still be traced within the airport car parks. However the site of the PH has been completely covered either when the car parking area was greatly enlarged circa the extension of the terminal building in 2002, or shortly after. Three questions I cannot figure out an answer to. One, which site (opposite the end of Western Avenue or of Eastern Avenue), was the Dove and Olive? Two, what was the name of the other? Three, which was closed and demolished first? Left: OS Landranger sheet 108. 1:50,000. Dated 1997. ...................................Right: OS Explore Map, sheet 275. 1:25,000. Dated 2004. The left map places a 'PH' beside the pub at the end of Eastern Ave, but does not mark the pub at the end of Western Ave, although the building is shown. The right map, published 7 years later, shows the building across from the end of Eastern Ave without notation, however does show, with a blue beer glass symbol the pub across from the end of Western Ave - the one now covered by airport car parking. The random numbers eg ยท24 (either in black or brown) are 'spot heights' in metres above mean sea level.

The Dove and Olive was at the entrance to Dungeon Lane off Hale Road and the other opposite Western Avenue had a military name like eg Grenadier.

The pub at the end of Western Ave/Hale Rd was The Pegasus "the peg", regarding the" 2 minute" walk to the airport it must have very large strides to do it in that time, maybe from the Peg.

Yes, agree with both Beemer and Vanguard on that. I don't know much about the Pegasus, I don't think I ever drank in there, but I did visit the Dove and Olive a few times. I think there was more drug dealing than drinking in the D&O and I don't think its closure was anything to do with airport expansion! I heard that the police were happy when it closed. A few of us made the mistake of going there one night straight after work. We were still in white shirts and black uniform trousers and of course the locals thought they were getting a visit from the bizzies and there was a bit of an undertone for a while until the landlord, who knew one of us, explained.
