Every two years or so, the Base Aerien #709 at Cognac invites members of aero clubs in the entire region for a day of lectures on what they do there, why they need so much airspace for training and on general aviation safety matters. I was there yesterday piloting Diamond DA40 F-GUVA. Along with about 100 other people we enjoyed a fantastic day of presentations, lectures and visits to parts of the base, with ,lunch supplied as well. (Well, it is France.)
I am attaching some pics which I hope are of interest. I am not really a registration note taker any more.
The Diamond
Reaper Drone
Grob 120
Pilatus PC21
A view from the tower showing the daytime undercover parking for the Pc21s
Activity at the base in principally for the Ecole de Pilotage de Chase. (Flight school for fighter pilots.) We saw the PC21 in numbers and several simulators in use, as well as crew rooms and briefing. I was picked at random the fly the Grob simulator which started well with the take off, and continued well until I failed to set up the approach properly and the instructor announced time up. I think he ended it to save my embarrassment of a heap of metal at the threshold. Secondary activity is the drone operation and on an irregular basis there are Rafales for interception duties.
A visit to the tower and the area control centre was most informative too.
We left about 17.00 for a flight home.
Fabulous day out.
