The MSAE trip to Finningley and Waddington in 1964

If my memory serves me well, entry to the annual Battle of Britain Air displays was free, way back in the day. Looking back, there were plenty of places to choose from. In 1964 we hired a coach to take us to Finningly, then on to Waddington for their display.

Here is a selection of photos from my collection. I am hoping the military buffs will point out any errors of types/variants/or anything else.

Now, on to Waddington to enjoy the flying display. Looking back, just what an opportunity to see a Canberra formation, The Beverly, a Vulcan and a Valiant, and what you do not see here, because frankly the experience was just beyond taking up a camera, the scramble of three Vulcans simulating response to a 4 minute alert.

TRIP REPORT IN MGAE 'FLYPAST': RAF FINNINGLEY and RAF WADDINGTON, Saturday 19th September 1964

As for 'grey ones', that day Don Stephens did not join the MGAE coach trip, but took his 'black and white' camera, making his own way to RAF Tern Hill and RAF Gaydon for the displays there.

What a great set of pure nostalgia! Wonderful, thanks. My own favourite (among many) is the flying Valiant.

Your photos are on 'flickr' so please can I suggest that you load some of them on to the flickr group "Aircraft with Dayglo". I'm one of the moderators for that group, and early dayglo images in colour are rare and very much appreciated. The group is becoming a unique resource & record of the 'swinging sixties' when magic mushrooms, psychedelic colours, and dayglo aircraft all went hand-in-hand.

Good catch with the Hunter - a rarity as it was the only The Mk 12 built. Mk12 was intended to be a trainer for the TSR2 but not surprisingly only one was built.
