1965 MSAE trip to AFD Lakenheath and Mildenhall 22 May 1965

Mildenhall was just a look over the fence, the main objective being the AFD at Lakenheath. Two photos selected.

At Lakenheath we were entertained with the arrival of several veteran and vintage type, some of which flew in the display. Quite a collection. It was a very informal atmosphere with the inevitable sights of people looking up exhaust pipes and generally getting in the way, but I think it all goes to show how relaxed it all was. Note in the photo of the Whitney Straight, an airman saluting some Big Whig in a passing car.

This slide was in a bad state. Heavily finger marked. I had to work at it to get the marks out, hence the "lumpy" sky effect.

Hi Ron, great set of pictures, I was on that trip but in the days before I could afford a camera. The Lighting of 56 sqd is in the best colour scheme of any fighter aircraft ever!!!

Is that not Brian Bond appearing behind the Aeronca 7AC Champion G-AOEH?

I could speed it up by missing out a lot more, or not spending the time to clean them up, but when i get to make choices I go for inclusion and the best quality my limited skills can provide.

And, yes I love the lightning. There were two there on that day.

That brings back memories, being a student at the time I think I was taking B & W pictures, I must check. I looked at the log from the magazine and saw it had K.J.W. as the scribe. No wonder It looked familiar!

Memory is a funny thing, I looked at G-AOEH and Brian and thought yes I remember that anorak though I would never have thought of it if I had not seen the picture. I do remember him drinking beer from a glass boot, but that was a different Merseyside trip.

Hi John,

I think the glass boot incident was in a bar at a campsite in Germany. We had such a good time that evening as we had been profiting from the popularity of the Beatles. The bar owner was hilarious and knew how to drink. He finished the night doing impressions of Hitler whilst we all fell about laughing, or just fell about.

My next project will be to put some photos up from that trip.

Hi Ron,
It was, there was a look of triumph as the boot was drained. It did not last for long.

There was a printed list of aircraft seen for the 1964 trip (by PHB) but not the 1965 trip. I must photograph my log which is in a foolscap book and produce it as pdf. There are plenty of interesting aircraft listed.

I will look forward to the photos there are some by R.A.S. on the ABpic website.

Not meaning to hijack this great thread but seeing the T-39 reminded me of the same bird at Greenham Common 1981. Thought it worth sharing the following

Certainly worth sharing. Greenham was always a good day out.
Always liked the T-39 and often wondered if the DH-125 was based on the concept, not the design of course, simply the idea of what it could be used for.
