A DAY 'STOP-OVER' AT MILAN/MALPENSA & VOLANDIA MUSEUM,
Thursday 21st September 2023
Thursday 21st September 2023
As there are currently no direct flights between Malaga and Malta I had a play around on 'Skyscanner.net' looking at routes and prices to get to the Malta Air Display. Options mostly concentrated on flying via Madrid, Barcelona, Milan or Rome. At that point it occurred to me that there was an aviation museum very close to Milan/Malpensa. After further research, I booked flights to Malta via Milan and home via Madrid, both with 6-8 hours of 'stop-over' time. An horrendous prospect for most passengers, but both destinations certainly should excite an 'aircraft watcher'!
So some months later, I found myself disembarking from Ryanair/Malta Air's Boeing 737/8 9H-QBK at Malpensa. Made my way to 'Left Luggage' to get rid of my weekend cabin bag for the day and after initial navigation problems out of the terminal due to ambiguous signage, found myself walking off the upper level of the terminal through a small car park, over a fly-over and towards two DC-9s and a Friendship in a field. The back-gate to the museum was locked, so a 15 minute trail around footpaths and through Sixt's overflow car park brought me to the main entrance, with a clear two and a quarter hours available to look around an impressive site, the former workshops of Caproni Aeronautica some dating back over a Century.
After an enjoyable couple of hours, left via the gate (which was opened on request) for an easy 10 minute walk back to the terminal, 2 hours before my onward flight on Ryanair/Malta Air to Malta on 737MAX 9H-VUI. Coming from drought suffering Spain, the great surprise of the day was that it rained! 15 minutes worth of heavy rain while I was inside the museum which stopped as suddenly as it started and prolonged heavy rain once I was back in the terminal.
A great 'day out', interesting aircraft in the Museum, views over part of the airport aprons and (hopefully) the aircraft seen and covered in this report will be of interest.

"·····" painted in markings never carried by that aircraft while active.
The year of construction is only a guide.

Nothing immediately noticeable of aviation interest, so moved on.
WORKSHOP
A number of 'deep rebuilds' in progress. Frame of a metal skinned bi-plane could be made out, together with a set of metal wings, very
likely a P-47D Thunderbolt mm 4653/51-19, although looked more like those from a Mustang (straight edges).
STORAGE AREA
While the door was open, I was unmistakably told off in rapid Italian as I raised my camera. A number of aircraft inside, mostly part
dismantled and few identifiable, even if I had known what they were! Near the door was P-47 Thunderbolt fuselage '19' and yet another

Quite a walk around a large 'period' site, clearly with some space remaining inside and a great deal outside. While returning to the entrance to ask for the gate to be unlocked, spotted a large compound of buses, trams and steam engines, apparently all part of the 'Ogliari Museum', but I had no time left to investigate further. Clearly Volandia is an expanding location.
