At last I have a slide scanner so I can contribute some of my old stuff, subject to getting the hang of it and the slides surviving 40 years. Anyway, here is one for starter. The 1965 MSAE European Tour Group, at Lydd, having just disembarked from a Carvair. Who can name them all? 1965 Purge group Lydd - 1024 by Ron Turner, on Flickr

Great photo--where are those likely lads now--Johns Francis and Wiseman were especially good to me on the purge of France and Spain the year before--still very grateful. PHB DID promise to look up some photos of the trip--still waiting--sadly I had no camera then so only memories--come on Phil get your finger out.LOL After all as a retiree you must have almost nothing to do these days.LOL(that really was tongue in cheek.LOL)

The missing name is thought to be Kieth Mckay. I was unsure of this, but another member suggested it and I think he may be right.
Sorry for the delay in getting back on this subject. I have been out of contact for a while. RT

Ron, What ever happened to the Bedford van? I think we went a bit upmarket on some of the trips I went on in the 60's when I think we had a hired Ford Transit. Thanks for sharing this article with us. Happy Days Bob

The Ford Transit Van, from which the minibus was derived, was first produced mid 1965, so at the time of the European trip pictured the J4 style Bedford/BMC was typical, along with the smaller VW minibus (although better known in its camper van form).

It looks very much like a Bedford Dormobile to me but what ever it is they are doing well to get 10 in if the photographer is amongst them. Regards Beemer.

There were 9 of us. The back row was reserved for luggage. Tents were stored on the roof rack An unknown volunteer took the photo. The minibus did well. The last part of the journey from Lydd to Liverpool was an adventure as we had celebrated the last night in France in some style. To start with we left Lydd driving on the wrong side of the road, all rather the worse for wear, in an atmosphere not improved by the consummation of our last supplies of beans, the transportation of two weeks' laundry for 9 people and a selection of French Cheeses. I cannot remember the exact route but we started in Calais, arriving in a Bristol 170 of Cie Air Transport, then into Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy as far as Lake Come and Milan, back into Switzerland and home up through France. to fly back to Lydd from Le Touquet in a Carvair. Unfortuantely my lookbooks were consigned to the recyling centre many years ago. Unforgettable in many ways.

Hi all
The one in the middle is G. McCallum known as mac . He later emigrated to Canada. I think that we flew Le Touquet to Lydd on the way back in B.170/32 F-BLHH 18 mins. 0822 to 0840. 8th Aug 1965 We flew out on the 25th July on Carvair G-ARSD 19 mins I don't have the take off time.
There were many outstanding places visited among them a USAF base in Germany where we had organized a tour round .F-105 and F-102 and , if my memory is correct, we were shown the nuclear fall out bunker several stories underground. One peacetime use was to house a 10 pin bowling alley. Above ground a Dutch AF Harvard had flown in. At a Swiss base we were shown Porters being built Venoms overhauled but we were not allowed to see the brand new Mirages being built. But our guide walked us right past the line.......nice fellow.
A great fun trip
