A friend of mine is starting his UAS flying next week and I'd quite like to get up and take some pictures. Anyone know the best places outside the fence? Cheers .mic

There was a time when there were several decent places from the woodland on the coastal side of the railway that forms the west boundary. However so much scrub has grown on the airfield side of the fence, forget the woodland tracks parallel to the rail line down the whole of that side of the airfield.
Depends on the active. There are decent views across the airfield over the shoulder height fence alongside the main dual carriageway road. No problem in walking or cycling along the footpath, but a major, major headache if in a car, as it is a clearway, with no pull-ins. I have at times turned right at the traffic lights just north (Southport) end of the airfield and parked under the trees just beyond where the Crossens bus service terminates and turns. It is hike back past the airfield gate and hangars to the cross airfield views.
Last year, for the anniversary beach flypast, I turned left at the traffic lights for the coast road. Just before the railway bridge rise, turned right and parked roadside in a housing estate. Back to the main road, walked over the railway bridge, then right on public tracks into an finger of sanddunes, some reasonably high. With a big lens distant approach shots possible, if landing from that end. Shots are possible from the housing estate, but little time to find and pan before something blocks the view. Never found airfield views from the domestic roads at the south end, but they could be there, but may be of no use anyhow due distance from the active.
Long time since I was last out there, but best views used to be from the edge of the flight-line apron , outside the flying club rooms, airfield side of the hangars, if you can gain official access.
Others may have better spots. My visits have been fairly few and far apart over the years.
Advice I've been given (and used) regarding finding locations around a boudary is to view Googleearth photos and extend the centrelines out.

I've just seen this, bit late unfortunately though. My Woodvale days are but a distant memory now sadly. Loved it there!
