How many of you noticed the DanAir Comet, with the shortened wings, used fro training, in the first Branif photo?
Also the 2 x AirUK Heralds, both with AirUK tails, but one still in BIA colours apart from that?

Brought back a few memories there, Cityflyer. I was working for Air UK at Gatwick in the early 80s. Never a dull moment, including the BCal 1-11 which became airborne when doing a fast taxi check! Not such a big problem you might think, but it was an engineer, not a pilot who was in control!

Nice to see the Comet get a mention. When I was taking my airside driving test at LGW many years ago, I had to park up next to her, and raise one of our vehicles up to door level on her. She was in a pretty bad way then. Did try to find if there was a way to get inside but she was sealed up tight!
I did fly to Pula in what was then called Yugoslavia as a 16 year old boy with my parents, in a Dan Air Comet. It was great landing "behind the curtain" and as we taxied in I could see 2 Li-2's, Russian copies of the Dak to our younger members, plus several Mig-21's.....the first I'd ever seen! As we disembarked we were all photographed by a guy on a balcony outside the control tower, I wonder what they did with the shot of me waving? :-)
I did manage a wander up there a couple of times while we were there, saw quite a few Migs circuit bashing, but there always seemed to be a lot of military about so I didnt dare take any pics, did manage to get a few serials though. I remember doing a boat trip one afternoon, and we went past somewhere that had a huge pile of F-84/F-86's.........never managed to find out where that was though!

It was doing controlled excelarated breaking, when it reached speed and the engines were shut down the aircraft lifted off, but ii landed and stopped just bebore the end of the rumway"31" with some burst tyres I will post a picture of the aftermath once I find it

Wow! Even the Balkan bomber, as it was known locally! Ah, the days of the Six Bells in Horley (still going strong), packed with Dan Air, Laker, and BCal crew. That place had 'extended licensing hours' long before they were legal!

When down that way I used to stop over at the Vulcan Lodge guest house in Horley - a great place run by an ex laker Stewardess - excellent breakfast as I remember.

Ahhhhhhhh!! Good ol' Gatters!Good seeing some of the aircraft I worked with so many moons ago! Good old DAN DARE followed by ' Weird Scareways' aka WORLD AIRWAYS! Loved those stretched '8s'! Later worked for ' Travel In Agony's' successor, Transamerica when living in KOAK! Now, The Six Bells that Garstonboy refers to; there's another story ! ! The Oak (http://www.theoakardingly.co.uk/) in Ardingly also had 'extended' hours AND the landlord had an incredible selection of Whiskeys all purchased from H.M. Customs auctions! As for parties, it didn't hurt to have a couple of BCAL 'Hosties' as room mates either ;D ! Good Days!

Wonderful memories!
I'll always remember my trips down south....usually heading to LHR for the sheer volume of aircraft, (how many BEA Trident 3's can you log in a week!) but somehow LGW always had the most interesting visitors.
I loved the place, maybe because you could get so close up to the aircraft but it always holds special memories and I try and get down there every time I'm in the area.
Love the photos - especially the Trans International DC-10 with the DC-3 in the background......as buspilot says, it was often what was in the background that caught your eye.
