UPDATE: 25 FEB 2011
Malta ATS has just reached an agreement with Tripoli ACC to implement the following direct routes in the Malta UIR and Tripoli FIR:
All departures from HLLT / HLLS to the east exiting the Athens UIR boundary to route as follows:
Via LUMED (tactical re-clearance will be given by Tripoli ACC) following published SID or published ATS route in Tripoli FIR
LUMED DCT NEVIK
LUMED DCT ARLOS
These DCT routes are flight plannable in the Malta UIR from FL195+ with immediate effect.
The Tripoli/Malta FIR boundary points RASNO / EKLIS / BONAR / OLMAX / INDOT / ELIMO remain closed for all traffic. Please do not flight plan via these points as they create additional workload for ATC and the operators will have to expect significant re-routing.

UPDATE: 28 FEB 11
We just received an update from the Libyans and the situation remains unchanged.
HLLT HLLS HLGD HLGT HLLM – for State aircraft only
The traffic situation has improved as we see a reduction in the HLLT arrivals and probably the tail end of the evacuation from Tripoli.
We still have reliable ground-ground communications with Tripoli ACC and the airspace east of LOTIN remains closed for traffic

Good shots, the Libyans really want these two back and have tried to fly into Malta aircrew to return them. Failed as the flight got refused permison to land. Let`s hope the authorities disable these aircraft whilst they sit in the sun.

Does anyone know what spotting is like at Luqa in these circs, I ask only as last time I was in Malta the authorities seriously frowned on taking photos of anything official, including people ?

Yep lots of security around,so wouldnt recomend it inside the terminal or around the airfield, having said that I did see a mound near the runway on a sunday afternoon with lots of cars parked on it,but as I was on a bus at the time could not investigate any further, hope that helps.
