For those of you like me who are coming up to your 60th birthday please see the attached which tells you when you will get your bus passes. I thought when I hit sixty I could get rid of my 2nd car and travel to work on the bus. How wrong I was. For anyone over sixty ignore the following. Birth Date 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 JAN Nov-11 Nov-13 Nov-15 Nov-17 Nov-19 Jan-21 Jan-22 Jan-23 Jan-24 Nov-25 FEB Jan-12 Jan-14 Jan-16 Jan-18 Jan-20 Feb-21 Feb-22 Feb-23 Feb-24 Jan-26 MAR Mar-12 Mar-14 Mar-16 Mar-18 Mar-20 Mar-21 Mar-22 Mar-23 Mar-24 Mar-26 APR May-10 May-12 May-14 May-16 May-18 Apr-20 Apr-21 Apr-22 Apr-23 May-24 Apr-26 MAY Jul-10 Nov-12 Nov-14 Nov-16 Nov-18 May-20 May-21 May-22 May-23 Jul-24 May-26 JUN Sep-10 Sep-12 Sep-14 Sep-16 Sep-18 Jun-20 Jun-21 Jun-22 Jun-23 Sep-24 Jun-26 JUL Nov-10 Nov-12 Nov-14 Nov-16 Nov-18 Jul-20 Jul-21 Jul-22 Jul-23 Nov-24 Jul-26 AUG Jan-11 Jan-13 Jan-15 Jan-17 Jan-19 Aug-20 Aug-21 Aug-22 Aug-23 Jan-25 Aug-26 SEP Mar-11 Mar-13 Mar-15 Mar-17 Mar-19 Sep-20 Sep-21 Sep-22 Sep-23 Mar-25 Sep-26 OCT May-11 May-13 May-15 May-17 May-19 Oct-20 Oct-21 Oct-22 Oct-23 May-25 Oct-26 NOV Jul-11 Jul-13 Jul-15 Jul-17 Jul-19 Nov-20 Nov-21 Nov-22 Nov-23 Jul-25 Nov-26 DEC Sep-11 Sep-13 Sep-15 Sep-17 Sep-19 Dec-20 Dec-21 Dec-22 Dec-23 Sep-25 Dec-26 So if you are 60 in July this year you will get your pass in November 2012. If you are 50 now you will get it when you are 65. Just think when you are 65 and you go to the match you can get a half price season ticket and travel to the game on the bus. Happy Birthday Bob

Are these the national ones? There are now two types. If you live in the Merseyside area, the ones issued at 60 by Merseytravel are just for the Merseyside area for those not entitled to receive the national one.
It was part of the Conservatives manifesto pledge that people of pensionable age (65) living in England will continue to get free travel. Under Labour it was everyone over 60. However, (as I understand it) those over 60 already in possession of a national pass are entitled to keep it.
Don't shout too hard though, some authorities are looking at scrapping free travel for the over 60's altogether as part of the cost savings there having to make.
Even though the bus companies are struggling to cope with the amount of money they receive from this scheme the government has cut it still further and as result many routes are starting to disappear. So, if you are lucky enough to get hold of one of these there may not be a bus for you to use it on.

Ste, These dates tally with enquiries I made myself at our local link in the Runcorn Shopping City. As far as I am aware they intend to change the age from 60 to 65 over the dates shown. Thus taking the pressure off the bus companies. If the bus companies charged less they may get more people on board. As far as getting rid of some routes- the buses in and around Runcorn are a joke. It's a pity we do not have a transportation service like they do in the states, now thats impressive and cheap. Lets face it we deserve it having worked all our lives> Hopefully I will get the cold weather payment this year as well although there is a rumour that this will be phased out. Happy Days eh!!!!- Makes you look forward to getting old. Bob

You'll need to get in touch with Cheshirebus to see if they have a scheme similar to Merseytravel.
Unfortunately, reducing the fares would put companies out of business. Most are struggling to cope with passenger numbers now. Double deckers are urgently required but cost over £155k each depreciated to scrap over a 16 year period. One company owner likened this to buying a house then demolishing it after 16 years.
Because of legislation and licensing etc, it costs over £24k (incl purchasing price) a year just to keep one sitting in the corner of a garage. Should it move it will consume fuel at a rate of 1 gallon for every 5 miles traveled. Therefore, an 86A operating from the Airport to the City Centre and back will consume just over4 gallons (18 litres) in one complete journey. For every bus you see on the road you can add three drivers and one third of an engineers wages plus a little for administration/support staff, ware & tare, insurance, and other overheads. So, to sum-up, with cost of vehicles, insurance, wages, compensation claims and fuel all going through the roof the days of cheap public transport are well and truly over.
Some good news for you is that Arriva have just invested £55m in new buses some of which could be heading for Runcorn. Speke have managed to secure 44 and these begin to arrive in August.

I've noticed at the match, Merseytravel are using a DublinBus "bendi bus" on their Soccerbus service, are these the same type Arriva are intending to use on the 501? if so space is going to be tight outside the terminal. I didn't realise they were so long!

You stated "It's a pity we do not have a transportation service like they do in the states, now that's impressive and cheap." Some cities that do are SAN FRANCISCO, 'DULLEST', NEW YORK!
There are NOT too many places in 'The Western Colonies' that have 'impressive transportation'! Where I live, the closest 'public transport', i.e. Bus Stop, is 30miles away at least (further for those who live south of me!) And this is just referring to buses! As for railways. trains, FORGET IT unless you live in the NorthEast Corridor, i.e. New York-Boston-etc.
Out of interest, where did you experience the 'impressive and cheap' transportation stateside?
Cheers

I'm lucky I am 63 and have had my 'Buzz Pass' for a couple of years , I live near a godd bus route to town [stockport] every 1/4 hour , and use it every day , and can be used Nationally , with the exception of early morning upto 9.30am . Its the only thing I've ever had for 'free' off any Government , and fully expext it to get 'cut' sometime soon . the scheme is due to finish in 2012 anyway so you young 'Fiftyniners ' might not get the chance to trave for 'Free' .

Never realised buses cost so much! Thats the cheaper end of the market. Brighton and Hove have just bought 21 Wright bodied Volvo B9's (double deck) at a cost of £180k each.

The reason for the change is due to the equalisation of pension age. Rather than bring down a man's pension age to 60 the equal rights groups managed to get the woman's pension age pushed up to 65. As this is being done in increments so the bus pass age goes up, as does the age for claiming Pension Credit. So no longer is 60 classed as retirement age and anyone signing as unemployed will now sign on past 60!!
