Just before my last Heathrow expedition my camera went tech. Its a canon 400D and is showing error code 99, which Ive since found out could mean anything. Further investigation revealed that the shutter isn't operating. Do any of my fellow chimpers know of any camera repair shops in the NW to which I could take it. I'm a bit reluctant to take it to the main shops as they will just probably send it to Canon and I'm a bit strapped for cash. Any info, advice or even a suggestion as how to repair it would be gratefully recieved.

This company comes highly recommended, i think they are in Stoke. www.hlehmann.co.uk/index.htmlI had the same fault on my 40D, i got a new shutter fitted at a place in North London for around £170. I have forgotten what the company was called but the 40D is still going strong two years later. Cheers Shaun

Have you tried resetting it back to 'Factory Default ' by removing the CMOS battery , its works a few times for me with Digital camcorders , dont know where they live in a 'still' camera though .if they are anything like camcorders to repair them your going to get well and truly 'spanked'.

As Shaun says, Lehmann's in Stoke. Took my EOS there earlier on this year after putting up with a dodgy autofocus for months. They charge £165 for a standard inspection, repair and clean, this includes small inexpensive parts. They will quote you and seek authorisation for anything more sinister.

This may sound daft but error 99 shows when a non compatable lens is fitted such as a Sigma on a Canon. Some Electronics in the lens conections on early.and even some late lens need an adjustment. sSigma do the work if you send the lens to them. There is plenty of info on Canon 99 error codes on net.

CloudWarrior, to echo the above comments, I use a Nikon and have also used Lehmans. Great service and very helpful staff. I dropped it off in Stoke Myself and collected it the next week. Lets hope its not too big a problem. Ian.
