July 21st is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Runcorn/Widnes bridge by Princess Alexandria and to mark it there are events including a parade of cars, motorbikes and scooters that were new in that year travelling across the bridge on Sunday July 17th. They are hoping (but not yet confirmed) to have the Red Arrows to do a fly-past on the 23rd. A lot of the events are hoping to raise money for Cancer and Hospice charities. Regards Beemer.

*edit - Weekly news are stating the date of the Red Arrows fly-by as July 23rd, still unconfirmed though!

Can't believe its 50 years. I have memories of lining up to take the transporter. A family friend was heavily involved in the opening. Not sure if its an urban myth or not, but he told a story that they built a special toilet (fully plumbed in) in case Princess Alexandra needed to answer a call of nature, but it went unused.

Danairamb, I think those "Royal Flush " stories go along with most royal visits. Walkers crisps in Skelmersdale built a loo for royalty as well and that wasn't used. What would it have been worth on E-bay if they had. Regards Beemer.

Between 1975-77 the 'Runcorn-Widnes Bridge' was widened and reopened and also renamed due to HRH QE2's silver jubilee!!

The Runcorn/Widnes Bridge gets called many things especially when you are stuck in traffic during road works. Regards Beemer.
