From what I have seen on Planefinder and Radar 24 it seems this area is used as a hold for inbounds to MCR usually start holding around 7`0.

This has been going on for the last few days and is due to the LVP (Low Visibility Procedure) operations at Manchester because of the clag that's descended. There are several holding patterns in operation and they are needed to provide additional separation and sequencing during these meteorological conditions. The hold over the St Helen's area is MERSI.
I too have seen numerous aircraft orbiting/banking over the Sutton Manor area of St Helen's which is at the southern end of the hold.

The handy thing in these LVP conditions is that Planefinder and others show track lines which means you can locate new or unknown Hold Pattern Areas.
